Bulldogs 2 Millionaires 1, fanzone problems?

Well done gents. It wasn't easy, but it's never easy, right? One thing is certain- If this team has the courage and guts and strength to bring it every night like they have brought it the last three games, they will be without a doubt the most hated team to play in the entire league. They have worked incredibly hard, they have been punishingly PHYSICAL, they have been FIRED UP. An incredibly hard team to play against. The players have created a problem for themselves. They have shown us what they can do, fans, coaches, broadcasters. They have shown that they have the heart, that they have the drive, that they have the work ethic.

Now they need to show us again, now they need to show us all the time. With the rewards they received at the end of the game last night- WINNING- I hope they have found their desired reward and their desired motivation.

Congrats to Jamie Amos on his 300th game. Nice to hear that former Bulldog trainer Matt Auerbach called him to catch up and to congratulate him. Way to go Jamie! Be sure to check out the BULLDOG SHOW on Shaw, starting Friday night and running throughout the weekend, for my latest show, all about Jamie.

Fanzone problems? I received a blog comment that our broadcast wasn't working through the fanzone the last two games. However, that's the ONLY thing I have heard. No other emails or comments. Usually I am bombarded. Is anyone else having this problem? Send me a note HERE PLEASE
In the future, please send me an email as soon as their is a problem. I can't always solve the problem, but I will certainly try. It's good to know that something is wrong....Two games later is waiting way to long! But better than not finding out at all!

Dogs host Mills, Timbit Tots visit dressing room

Tonight's second intermission feature guest is Scott Didmon, play-by-play voice of the Victoria Grizzlies.

While the coaches were working me over on the bike in the dressing room Monday, the Port Alberni Parks and Rec "Timbit Tots" made a visit to the dressing room. This is the future of the game here. Good on Parks and Rec, Tim Horton's, and the Dogs, for all they do to give these kids experiences like this one. So darn cute.

It's funny that I can take better pictures while seating my butt off on the bike than I can just standing there doing nothing. Maybe that's the secret to cell phone pictures.

The pink shirt is coming out. Yes, the STREAK BREAKER. Beware Millionaires, beware. It's broken three streaks before. Boys, please don't make me wear a pink shirt for nothing. I've had about 15 people since Sunday tell me it's time for the pink shirt. I agree. Might want to wear your sunglasses tonight. I might want to wear my ear plugs. Every three feet in the rink I hear something else smart about the shirt. Mostly the exact same thing. That's ok. That's why it's the streakbreaker, the secret weapon.

The Dogs better be ready to go. The Millionaires are going to be hungry, as they are 1 point out of a playoff spot.

What a great night tonight at the "Everyone Welcome " skate at Winter Wonderland in the Coulson Rink of the Alberni Valley Multiplex. I couldn't believe the turn out when I showed up tonight. In Port Alberni, it really means "everyone welcome" It was bedlam. I think the players and staff enjoyed it because it again shows them the support they have in the community.

Next up, is a special video of a lap around the "Winter Wonderland" Special thanks goes out to Kevin Ross for taking the video for me. I got the idea to get a video of the set up after I talked to Langley Chiefs Head Coach and GM Harvey Smyl, who was very impressed after seeing the set up on Saturday. He thought it was very cool and a great unique idea. Burnaby Express Broadcasters Eddie Gregory and Gord Doerksen thought it was pretty neat too.

So, with that in mind I figured I should get a video of it, to show it to people out side of Port Alberni that might never get a chance to see it for themselves. I apologize for the quality and darkness of the video. My camera is not suited for video, period, especially in a dark environment. You can still get an idea of what the rink set up is like though. My thanks again to "Rossie" for a great job on the video. I must admit I had a little laugh at how Kevin took time to talk to all the kids but ignored Zack Mazo. At least we got your picture up on here Zack.

As I finished this post I found out that Daniel Moriarty has been named to the Coastal Conference All Star team for the BCHL All Star game in Victoria coming up in January. Congrats Daniel! Couldn't have happened to a better guy. Bulldogs This Week, 6pm-7pm TONIGHT, followed by Canucks @ Kings

What a night for hockey fans on THE PEAK. First we have Bulldogs this week from 6 to 7 tonight live at Alberni Chrysler, then we have the Canucks at Kings pregame show immediatley after the show ends at 7:00. The puck drop and all the play-by-play with Tom and Shortie begins shortly after 7:30.

Certainly a tough tough loss for the team yesterday, coming so close and then having a tough one go in against them with just 1:18 to play in a tie game. I call it a "tough one" because Harrison May was clearly body checked into the net before the puck was tapped in. I watched the replay several times, and it indeed appears accidental. That doesn't matter though. He was hit, and the puck beat him, and that's the game winner.

It tough for me to talk about this, simply because I come off as a homer blaming the ref. I'm not blaming the officials, I'm just "telling it like I see it" The game happens very fast and that play was especially quick.

It was just as quick seconds later when Josh Pineiro was tripped while carrying the puck down the wall in the Express zone off the face off when the Dogs called time out and pulled their goaltender looking for the tying goal. The Dogs executed the draw perfectly, and got the puck to Pineiro with room. He was then chopped off of his feet, he lost the puck, and as I said on the air: "that's a big play as Finucci SCORES into the empty net" It all happened in a matter of 2 and a half seconds. The Dogs lost the puck and never got it back and it was game over.

It's really tough because it might've been the best officiated game of the year in the sense that the teams were allowed to PLAY- just three power plays for the Dogs, and just two for the Express. It's a fine line, you want the official to let them play, but you also want the calls made that impact the game. And the last two plays impacted the game big time. 4-3 and 5-3. I can't say it any better than that.

The effort the Dogs put forth and the level they played at is something better to think about.

7-3 Chiefs over Dogs, Dogs host Express.

Plain and simple, the #1 power play in the BCHL certainly looked like it tonight as the Chiefs were deadly on the pp, scoring 5 times. The Dogs did a good job on the pp themselves, scoring twice.

It was an exciting game, where the Dogs as a group top to bottom showed the level of work ethic that will lead them to improvement.

Game Day!

Tonight's second intermission feature guest is Eddy Gregory, the Play-by-Play voice of the Burnaby Express.

The Dogs host the Langley Chiefs tonight. As far as I know, the Chiefs beat the Clippers 5-4 in Nanaimo last night. I say "as far as I know" because that's the last score on the fanzone boxscore and no final score or boxscore is up yet on the league site. And no one seems to care enough to post something on the good ole' message board. Yes, it does have it's uses, besides bashing players/coaches/staff/owners/refs/radio guys.

Big credit goes out to Alan Kerr and Bryant Perrier for enjoying their Friday night off by driving to Nanaimo to watch the game and see what they could find out about Langley and their tendencies and strategies in the hopes of adjusting to that to give their team a boost tonight. I've long said it, it takes work ethic and drive and desire and all that stuff for coaches as well as players. The only time the Dogs won 2 in a row all season was when Alan and Bryant enjoyed their first Friday off all season by driving down to Duncan to watch Salmon Arm play their the night before they rolled into the pound. It would've been easy that night, and last night, to kick back and watch a couple of NHL games or go out for dinner or just do nothing. Trust me, that was fun, and easy. HA!

While I'm at it, thanks to Bryant, and even Alan yesterday (yes, they had me surrounded) for getting me on the bike and giving me the direction and encouragement to work my buns off. My legs are killing me. But I know it's good for me.

Man, I'm a thankful guy today. I REALLY REALLY owe Jesse Moser. Wednesday I was on the bike and my cell phone rang. I hopped off the bike to get it, and jumped back on and talked while I was riding. I then hung up, and not wanting stop my ride to put it down, I looked for a soft place to throw it. Which turned out to be laundry. Which wasn't clean. Ouch. I left the rink and forgot it there, and dirty laundry (yes even with these players) is plenty better than in the alternative which was the washing machine. Thanks for saving my cell phone Jess, I was informed that I owe you big time and I certainly do!!

The Dogs have awarded their two A's that were once on the sweaters of Sawyer Eichel and Isaac Smeltzer. The two new players wearing them will be Shane Malone and James Kerr. With such a young team, the letters could have went to just about anybody. I'll get the word "from the horses mouth" on the pregame show tonight as to why these players were picked. I'd guess a couple of factors taken in besides leadership abilities and how these guys are in the room and on the bench would be character and work ethic. Read the release from the team HERE

The heart that’s hung on the tree in the multiplex bears the name of the purchaser so kids can look for their heart when the go skating. And we’ll be giving out variety pins to donors as well. I came across this story that really hooked my attention- I'll cut and paste the parts that matter- from the Edmonton Journal

One-sided Oilers coverage doesn't impress

I'm sick and tired of the fawning broadcast coverage of Oilers games. Recently, Oilers players were given all three stars by the pay-per-view broadcast team -- after a loss! Embarrassing. Pravda was more objective. Props to CBC's Hockey Night in Canada for allowing its on-air staff to at least sometimes call 'em as they see 'em. But pay-per-view broadcasters -- and some on the TV sports networks -- are little more than propagandists for team and league. Their telecasts should begin with a warning: The following is a paid advertisement for the Edmonton Oilers hockey club.CHED radio's Rod Phillips manages to walk a fine line between homer and critic. I remain a huge fan of Rod, who is far more entertaining than the game on many nights. It's a given that Rod will criticize the refs. But he isn't afraid to slam the team's play. Props to him, too. I realize that NHL broadcasters are in a difficult position. They must purchase the broadcast rights from the league, or individual teams. But their rah-rah commentary, especially during dull or mistake-filled games, insults our intelligence. I hate that.

And that right there is my perpetual battle. No one knows what a play-by-play broadcasters go through. Unless it's someone that's been live on the air before, or speaking live before a large crowd reacting to something happening live right in front of them as they speak. Then they can probably relate.

The battle is- How do you cover the game, what do you see, what do you say?

All in a days work for me. It's a little more difficult to keep everyone happy when the team has the record they do right now though. It's always easier when the team is winning. Easier for the radio guy, the coaches, the players, the fans, the bus driver, the public address announcer, the office people....and it goes on.

I get it from both sides. And the funny thing is that those on either side would have NO CLUE that anyone is on the other side of the fence. What exactly do I mean?

It's either A or B.

A is- I get heat from people because I'm not positive enough, I'm too critical, blah blah.
B is- I get heat from people because I'm an unabashed homer who's way too nice, blind to what's really happening, not critical enough blah blah.

I just try to be C. I call it like I see it. Having said that, I ALWAYS try to be positive. I am not told to be positive. I choose to be. The glass is always half full. It's not easy all the time.
I work in accordance with the team. I know the players and coaches. I look them in the eye and ride the bus with them and sit down to dinner with them. I'm not going to bash them. At the same time, I'm not going to lie to the fans either. If I think the team got out worked, I say they got out worked. If I think they weren't ready I'll say they weren't ready. I'm just honest. So shoot me. I tell the truth, it's easier to remember!

You'll notice I am saying "if I THINK..." I've said it before, I'll reiterate it again- It's just my opinion, not gospel. I never try to sell it as anything but that. I know full well that opinions are like medulla oblongatas, every body's got one.

I first heard that line back in 1999 as a rookie broadcaster from Kerry Clark, (Wendel Clark's brother) when he was the coach of the OCN Blizzard. He didn't agree with what I said on the air, and said that line....He didn't say medulla oblongatas though, but something that you really shouldn't really say on the radio. Being that he's a former minor league enforcer, a tough as nails farm kid from Kelvington Saskatchewan, I'll let you guess what he said.

Chalk it up to a lesson learned for me.

Anyway, that's where I'm coming from and how I call the game, for those that didn't know already!

Be careful what you say.

I recently had someone take issue with something I said during a broadcast. And no, the above writings are not in response to this.

Anyway, 34 games in and this is the first occurrence this season, that could be a new record!

The root of this issue was that I "assumed" something. I apologized to the person for this and said "no, you're right, I shouldn't have assumed I'm sorry"

I had to laugh a mere second later when the person said that they then assumed something in response to my assumption...HAHA. I said "woah, wait a minute....you take issue with me assuming and then do the exact same thing and assume yourself?"

I guess it's true, "assuming makes and ass out of me and an ass out of you" If you have heard the phrase used before. No, I'm not saying you are an ass if you are reading this. Please don't assume that! haha.

I do indeed care 100% about any comments that are put my way regarding the broadcast. Anyone that has raised an issue with me or has given advice or criticism to me can attest to that statement.

The fact that the above mentioned issue was raised to me in the middle of the packed lobby of the rink as I'm running around frantically like a chicken with it's head cut off as I was supposed to be on the air 5 MINUTES AGO and I still don't even know at the time if we even have a game or not because there's no refs- yet I still stopped to address the issue- should prove that I care. There's a time and a place. That wasn't it.

For future reference- anyone and everyone- please feel free to email me, comment on the blog to me, or phone me, should you have a concern/complaint/suggestion/criticism, etc etc etc. It's not like I haven't mentioned that a 100 times. When I'm at the rink, I'm at work, trying to do my job. I'll do what I can, but no promises.

Man, I guess I need a game to do today, too much free time to post and think about this stuff!

If theres one thing that the very start of this post today tells me, it's that there will probably be a time that when I advance from this level and league and market that I will have to just not care what people say about me- like that Oilers newspaper story- but I'm not at that point yet!

Bulldogs Christmas party

Just got back from the Bulldogs Christmas party for the owners/staff/support staff/players/billets. I just want to take this opportunity to thank the team for the kind words passed my way and the nice Christmas present.

After hearing the coaches speak and the players speak, it made me realize what an incredible group of people are involved with this team. It just makes me hope that much more that this group can come together and continue to improve and get some wins. I wish the fans would have been there to see how these guys conduct themselves, because it would make them even want to cheer for them harder. The fans don't know most of the guys any further than their interviews, and their play on the ice. Take my word for it, these guys are great kids. It was a treat to hear every player on the mic introducing himself, and then calling up his billet family and then saying a few words about them and words of appreciation for taking them into their homes.

Which brings me to the billets.

Another part of the great group that makes the team whole. All great people and families, who play a hugely important part in Junior Hockey, providing these players a home away from home. Thank you billets!

The highlight of the night might have been watching the Bulldog rookies serenading the crowd with a special song to the Bulldog vets to the tune of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. Good stuff.

In a great indicator of what the Bulldogs coaches and owners and players and fans really think of their fans, the topic of the incredible support this team receives was brought up about 10 times. Now remember that the fans weren't in attendance here. This wasn't a public event and this wasn't on the radio or in the paper. This wasn't lip service. Yes, I know that the billets and staff are some of the biggest fans the team has. But they weren't the fans that were being mentioned in this sense. When you see the group together like they were in this instance, still talking about the fans and the support they receive, you know it's something special, and you know it's something they appreciate very much and something that motivates them everyday.

Besides four more games to go before the holiday break, the team is very busy. They are delivering the Teddy Bears tomorrow from Saturday night's game to the kids at the West Coast General Hospital, as well as other locations to bring some smiles and some holiday cheer. They have a couple of more Christmas parties to go, the Bulldogs Volunteer's Party, the Kids Club Party, a skate with the Bulldogs, and probably more that I don't know about.

Last but not least, and probably the best thing I read all day, was the article on the Bulldogs website about the team's Educational Program. Tom McEvay is a champ, period, and an incredible asset to the Bulldogs organization and this community. When it comes to parents and their concerns about where their young men go away from home to play, and when it comes to players that want to make sure they have every chance to move on in hockey, the priority the Bulldogs have put on education and the plan and program they have in place will play a huge part when it comes to recruiting top end players.

Bulldogs show on SHAW tonight

I've been hard at work at SHAW over the last couple of days putting the finishing touches on the latest Bulldogs show for SHAW TV, channel 4 in Port Alberni. Be sure to check out "The Daily" only on SHAW after 6pm tonight and over the next couple of days for the latest show, where we look at the Bulldogs community stuff and talk with Bulldogs Head Coach and GM Alan Kerr, Director of Marketing and Public Relations Laurie Smillie and Bulldogs forward Marcello Ranallo.

The good people at the SHAW studios are putting the final cuts and edits on the episode as we speak to get it on the air in it's final form tonight. Thanks to Darren, Nancy, and Jenny for all of their efforts!

Dogs host Clippers, drive safe everyone!

A tough one for the Dogs last night as they dropped a 7-1 decision to the Clippers in Nanaimo. The highlight of the night might have been the 5 to 10 Clipper fans that approached me to say that they enjoyed the blog, especially the Cornell stuff.

Newly acquired Mark Morikawa was fun to watch. He is very small, Brandon Wong-esque. Two sides to that- You WILL take a physical pounding, you will NEED to keep your head up. You will also make people MISS. And that's one of the things the Dogs have needed. a dynamic offensive guy that can create. He looks like he fits the bill. I hope Eliot Raibl and Evan Witt make it to town for tonight's game to make their Bulldog debuts.

Bulldog faithful not going anywhere....

Except to the top of the hump.

Forgive me for worrying for even ONE MILLISECOND if there would be anyone at the top of the hump today as the Dogs headed to Nanaimo. The only time this was tried before was when there was first overall on the line, when the team was 40 and 10 (or so) and when things were going good and the playoffs were on the horizon.

This time it was much different. It was colder, it was darker, and the team isn't in the position that they were then. Things haven't been easy for these guys. Wins, losses, adversity, you name it. I was worried that the bus would roll up there tonight and there would be just a couple of people and the players would be CRUSHED. Afterall, this send off was to show them that the fans still believed and still supported them.

Well, the fans sure do. The guys were anything but crushed. They were motivated, they were surprised, they were blown away. Well done faithful. Not anywhere near the people that were there last time. It's my hope that this will help turn these guys around and one day get them the sendoff at the summit to go and win a game that REALLY means something. This February woud be good.

I'll apologize for my loud voice on the video. I was blown away myself at the support, just like the guys. As you hear on the video "wow" "look at this!" "holy smokes" It's me saying "are you kidding me!" As I was just blown away.

Dogs visit Clippers, Dogs make trades, Dogs help with youth hockey camp, John Grisdale comments on the CARDS.

Tonight's second intermission feature guest is former Bulldog Tyler Ruel, be sure to tune in.

It's been a busy 24 hours or so for Bulldogs GM Alan Kerr as the team has seen a 5 player change in their roster, with two players leaving and three players coming on.

Gone is 20 year old defenseman Isaac Smeltzer to the Vernon Vipers for 18 year old d man Eliot Raibl and 18 year old forward Evan Witt.

20 year old Evan Michalchuk is gone to the Salmon Arm Silverbacks for 18 year old forward Mark Morikawa.

Further proof that the hockey world is a small one- Morikawa and Josh Pineiro were teammates last year.

I had many emails and phone calls last night and this morning from people wondering why I hadn't commented on the trades yet. The answer is simple- they weren't official. The BCHL message board is NOT OFFICIAL. Any deal that is not approved by the BCHL is not official. Maybe it's just a formality, but until something is official, it isn't officially released. Until it's officially released, it's not sent to the media and it's not something I will mention.

Although 90% of the time the BCHL message board's rumours are true.

Now that the deals have been approved by the BCHL, and they are in the transactions section of the BCHL homepage, I have commented on them.

Best of luck to Isaac and Evan, two good guys that I'm happy to call friends. I'm just the play-by-play guy but when you spend three years doing what I do with these guys you get a familiarity and a friendship that develops.

Both players gave their hearts and souls to this team and this town. What more could you ask?

Welcome to Dog land Eliot, Evan, and Mark. Right into the fire for these guys- a home and home with Nanaimo. Should be fun.

While the skates of Smeltzer and Michalchuk won't be easy to fill, it will be fun to watch how the team reacts to the change. Not only is there three new guys joining the team, there is big time minutes to be taken by SOMEONE. That's 5 on 5, power play, penalty kill. I hope the rest of the roster is motivated by the opportunity that has presented itself to them, the chance to become a big time player. The team wins in the end if someone steps up to fill those roles.
