Scoreboard after 40

Another shortie, 6-1 Clippers....

Yet another odd-man rush, again shorthanded, 6-1 Clippers 19:03 of the second as Greg Fraser goes low far-side from Colton Dahlen

4-1 Clippers, line brawl....

Old time hockey...

I wanted to make the Salmon Fest Fireworks...seems they just happened in here!

Dogs make it 4-1 on a 5 on 3....Clippers picked up a double minor for high sticking, which was disputed by the Clippers staff resulting in a 5 on 3. Dogs connect as Craft scores on a rebound off a Chase Van Allen shot that was deflected by Ryan Lough.

Still on the power play immediately afterwards Clipper goalie Lacouvee knocked over behind the net, resulting in a line brawl..Dogs still on the PP....

4-0 Clippers...

...another odd man rush. Hladin with his second of the game from Brenden Forbes and Kyle Kramer assist at 1:11 of the second

3-0 Clippers on a 3 on 1 rush....

Dogs out of it, Clippers firing on all cylinders....

3 on 1 rush worked to perfection, Colton Dahlen takes a drop pass from Reid Sturos and snaps one high glove side on Rebagliati 16:26 of the first

1-0 Clippers, now 2-0 Clippers

Clippers take a 1-0 lead 13:09 into the first, Brad Rebagliati makes the first save on the breakaway but Steve Hladin banks the loose puck home from behind the line. Kyle Kramer picks up the only assist at 13:09 of the first

As I write this it's 2-0 at 14:13, a giveaway ends up at the point and Austin Dick blasts it home. Mason Blacklock and Trevor Fitzgerald assist.

UPDATED with DETAILS, Dogs 4 Grizz 0

The Bulldogs improved their Exhibition record to 1-1-1 (no overtime in preseason) with a 4-0 win over the Victoria Grizzlies Wednesday night at the Dog Pound.

The game was scoreless after 20 minutes with the Dogs holding an edge in the play out-shooting the Grizz 13-3 with Alec Dillon playing sharp in net. Must have been his Port Alberni connections...I say that tongue in cheek as I'm friends with some of his family from here and they will no doubt give me the gears!

The Dogs got on the board just short of three minutes into the second when John Brumwell knocked down a clearing attempt and walked into the right face-off dot and snapped one home. Assists went to Michael Pond and Nick Kerr at 2:50 of the second. It was 2-0 Dogs with 3:36 to play in the frame when Ryan Lough deflected an Evan Tironese shot/pass in the slot.

The lead was 3-0 on a nifty goal by John Brumwell with 8:18 to play in the game as he scored on a one-timer from the slot converting a quick flip pass on one bounce with Pond and Kerr again assisting. Nathan Craft would then finish the scoring with a solo effort late in the game on a shot reminiscent of his goal in Nanaimo on Sunday as he stole the puck off the last-man-back inside the Grizz zone and walked in and snapped one top corner, short-side with 3:32 to play in the game for the 4-0 final.

Final Stats - unofficial...hey I had a 2.5 year old in my lap, cut me some slack!

Nice to see Bill Bestwick back in the barn! Too bad no triplets, but not at all unexpected as I said something to the fact today on the 93.3 The Peak FM Morning Show!

That's it for now...great to see my first game in the Dog Pound this season...now get it full and drop the puck for real! Of course that's a ways off, for now it's two more exhy tilts before the BCHL Showcase next weekend as the Dog host Nanaimo on Friday night before heading down to Duncan Saturday to visit the Capitals.

Trevor Alto named Executive Director...

August 29, 2012
For immediate release:

The British Columbia Hockey League is pleased to announce the hiring of Trevor Alto as the league’s new executive director.

Alto comes to the BCHL after six years in the financial industry. He is responsible for executing all league sponsor deliverables, generating new partnerships, heading the league’s finance committee and overseeing the day-to-day administration of the league office.

In addition, Alto is tasked with meeting the objectives of the BCHL Strategic Plan including building the BCHL brand and ensuring players advance in and beyond the BCHL. He will be responsible for applying the BCHL’s discipline regulations and will work with BCHL director of officiating Derek Adams to ensure the long-term effectiveness of the BCHL Officiating Program.

“I am excited to join the BCHL and take on the challenge of growing what is an already-solid league,” said Alto, 33. “As a former junior and university hockey player, I realize the opportunities hockey provides and am looking forward to ensuring those continue to be available for our current players.”

Alto played in the BCHL with Prince George Spruce Kings and the Alberta Junior Hockey League with the Crowsnest Pass Timberwolves. The White Rock, B.C. native went on to play for the UBC Thunderbirds from 2000 to 2003 while he completed studies in sports management and commerce.

“We are pleased to have a person of Trevor’s calibre join the BCHL office,” said BCHL commissioner John Grisdale. “Trevor’s experiences in business and hockey will be a real asset to us as we continue to grow our league and provide opportunities for players and their families.”

Clippers 8 Dogs 2

Well thank goodness that counted for nothing! The Dogs started the game behind the 8-ball, down a man in the first 10 seconds and down on the scoreboard shortly afterwards.

The team showed some guts hanging in there down 3-0 early on the road, but there aren't many positives to take out of this one other than maybe it's nice to get it out of the way, and it's nice to get the new players the experience of playing away from home.

Final stats, unofficially...I had the Clippers at 3 for 3 on the power play while the Dogs went 0 for 5.

Connor Lacouvee started the game for the Clippers before giving way to former Bulldog AP Nathan Alalouf. Bryce Dirocco went the distance for the Dogs.

Next up - a visit from the Victoria Grizzlies on Wednesday night!

Bulldogs Trade Larose to Dauphin
PRESS RELEASE

August 26, 2012
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Alberni Valley Bulldogs would like to announce that the organization has traded the CJHL rights of 92-born goalie Matt Larose to the Dauphin Kings of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League for future considerations.

Larose was acquired in October of last season in a trade that saw him come to the Bulldogs along with 94-born defenseman Daniel Delbianco and the CJHL rights to 93-born defenseman Eric Walker in exchange for 92-born defenseman Tanner Hicks, 93-born defenseman Marley Keca, and 92-born forward Taylor House. Eric Walker started the 2011/12 season with Northern Michigan University in the NCAA before leaving to split last season between the Vancouver Giants and
Swift Current Broncos.

The Bulldogs’ hockey operations worked hard over the last two months to find Larose an opportunity where he will have a chance to be a number one goalie in his 20-year-old season after the team aquired 92-born goalie Jay Deo and signed 95-born goalie Brad Rebagliati.

The Alberni Valley Bulldogs would like to wish Matt all the best in the 2012/13 season. Matt has strong character and always conducted himself as a professional.

For more information please contact head coach Kevin Willison at 250.735.0487
or kevin@albernivalleybulldogs.ca.

Dogs host Caps tonight to open exhy season, visit Clippers tomorrow

The Bulldogs will face their first "real" opposition tonight as they open up their five-game Exhibition schedule by hosting the Cowichan Valley Capitals at the Dog Pound. The Capitals had their first "live fire" exercise last night as they played the Victoria Grizzlies to a 4-4 draw at the Juan De Fuca Arena.

I won't be making the game tonight as I'm squeezing in one last family outing heading down the Alberni Inlet to the McTush Creek Campground for a pig roast and the "die hard" derby tomorrow. Accept my apologies for not being able to keep you updated real time tonight, but it's a very long season being away from the family so I want to take advantage of the chances when I get them. As we broadcast every single regular season and playoff game there are no nights off once the puck really drops!

McTush...worth a trip if you haven't been, a short drive from town!

I will keep you updated on tomorrow's game from the Frank Crane Arena at 7:00pm! Until then, wish me good fishing, I haven't been out to get a Salmon this year!

Go Dogs!

Dogs hire Spiros Anastas as General Manager, Interview 8:10 tomorrow AM on THE PEAK

The hits just keep on coming.I need another arm to keep up with all this news...Matt Korchmar was announced as the goalie coach earlier today and now this!

I wonder if Spiros has some good stories from Western Michigan University of Frank "the tank" Slubowski's exploits with the Broncos last year during his MVP season! He sounds like the perfect guy to be the face of the francise with his education backgound and when you combine his hockey background with it one can't help but think he's the perfect guy to work with Rick Schievink, Kevin Willison and Adam Hayduk in Hockey Ops.

Welcome to the Valley and the Pound Spiros, looking forward to seeing you at THE PEAK tomorrow!

August 23. 2012 For immediate release

The Alberni Valley Bulldogs are pleased to announce the appointment of Spiros Anastas to the position of General Manager effective immediately.

Alberni Valley Bulldogs/Port Alberni Junior Hockey Society Director Darren DeLuca confirmed the appointment today and commented that the team and the society are very pleased to recruit someone of Spiros’ caliber to join the team. “It is a credit to both the reputation of the Alberni Valley Bulldogs and the BCHL. Spiros will be an important element in the long term health and sustainability of the organization. ” said DeLuca, adding that the new position is intended to focus specifically on achieving business excellence within the organization and will provide the final link in the staff and management team that is already in place for the coming season.

Anastas brings excitement and energy to his new role and holds a BA in Economics and a BSc in Business Administration/Accounting along with a recently completed a Masters’ degree in Sports Administration. Anastas, a Mississauga, Ontario native, had a Junior A career in the OPJHL with the Bancroft Hawks, Huntsville Otters, and Vaughn Vipers from 2002 to 2006 before attending Lebanon Valley College as a dual sport student-athlete, competing in Track & Field and anchoring the Hockey team as Captain for four seasons. Anastas brings a variety of both on and off ice experiences having held Assistant Coaching positions at Lebanon Valley College and most recently Western Michigan University.

Anastas was in Port Alberni earlier this month at the Junior Prep Camp and fell in love with the community and its evident passion and support for hockey. "I am extremely thrilled to be joining the Alberni Valley Bulldogs. I see a very bright future for the team and I'm excited to be a part of it. We will need all hands on deck from top to bottom and support from all of our fans and sponsors so we can reach our goals and I am looking forward to helping make that happen, and to make Port Alberni proud. ” said Anastas.

The Alberni Valley Bulldogs would like to welcome Spiros to the organization and look forward to a successful 2012 – 2013 season.

The public’s first opportunity to see this years’ team on the ice is Saturday night when the Dogs host the Cowichan Valley Capitals in BCHL exhibition play, the puck drops at the Alberni Valley Multiplex at 7.

The Alberni Valley Bulldogs and the Port Alberni Junior Hockey Society invite you to a media session and introduction of Spiros Anastas, Friday August 24th at 11am at the Alberni Valley Multiplex.

The Alberni Valley Bulldogs are proud to announce that Matt Korchmar will replace Perry Elderbroom of Gold In The Net as the Alberni Valley Bulldogs goalie coach.

Korchmar makes his return to the Alberni Valley and to the organization. Korchmar appeared in 9 games between the pipes for the Bulldogs in 2006/07 before moving on to play for the Portage Terriers and the Fort McMurray Oil Barons.

“Matt is a former Bulldog making our relationship that much stronger,” said Alberni Valley Bulldogs director of hockey operations Rick Schievink. “The Alberni Valley Bulldogs are honored and excited to have Matt back in the Alberni Valley and a part of the organization.”

Korchmar will also instruct at the Alberni District Hockey Canada Skills Academy and will also be available for additional goalie instruction here in Port Alberni.
