Dogs break streak, more great pictures from the road!

What a poetic finish last night, with Marcello Renallo scoring the game winning goal against his old team for the Dogs to break the losing streak. The boys made it interesting until the end, and even at times appeared to be trying their best to lose the game. But they held on, and they now have 3 out of 4 points so far. Tonight it's the Trail Smoke Eaters as the Bulldogs face the only team in the league they haven't seen yet, 52 games in!

Some pictures from the road- More to add later but here's what I have for now. This is one block from the rink in Kelowna. I fought the urge to go in there and host the morning show, LOL

Former Bulldog Volunteers Roy and Howard Stevens. They used to be the "net guys" during the intermissions taking care of the nets during the ice clean. They now live in Lake Country, but came to Kelowna sporting lots of Bulldog gear. You can take the boys out of the valley but you can't take the valley out of the boys!

Hello from chilly Kelowna, Dogs hit interior again

Greetings from Kelowna Memorial Arena. Certainly a nip in the air up here in the pressbox as the Bulldogs gameday skate goes on below me. After leaving Port Alberni 830am yesterday the team travelled all the way to Kelowna, checked into our hotel, and headed right downtown to Prospera Place to watch the Kelowna Rockets host the Prince Albert Raiders in Western Hockey League action. A couple of former BCHL'ers on the ice last night- 2002-2003 Alberni Valley Bulldog Chris Ray is now the captain of the Rockets, and coming into relief in goal after the Rockets fell down 3-0 early in the second was Torrie Jung, last year's back up standout for the Cowichan Valley Capitals. Jung played well, but the Rockets were never really in this one as PA won 4-1. Hopefully another PA can get a win tonight!

This morning it was a 730am breakfast at the Hotel and then right here to the Kelowna Memorial Arena for the skate. Beauty old barn this one! A couple of good news items. It looks like Anthony Gorenszach has been given the green light to play so hopefully we will see him tonight or this weekend. "Tony" was aquired by the Dogs at the trade deadline but has not yet played. From all "on the record" comments I've received, Gorenszach arrived ALOT more hurt than "day to day" as the Bulldog were told his condition was. I really like him as a player so here's hoping he can boost the back end defensively and offensively, special teams and 5 on 5. Also the Bulldogs have picked up an affiliate player from Kimberly of the KIJHL, d-man Jordan Forman. Not sure on the spelling. Looking foward to see what he can do this weekend as well.

Lastly- here's the "feature guest" interviews for the second intermissions of the 93.3 The Peak FM Bulldog broadcasts this weekend. Tonight from Penticton my guest will be Westside Warriors play-by-play voice Kevin Parnell. Friday here in Kelowna Tim Kehler, Trail Smoke Eaters coach and GM will by my guest. Finally, Saturday in Trail I will be joined by former Bulldog Joe Scali, now at Cornell University. The Bulldogs have won four in a row in the Interior- Quesnel, Vernon, Salmon Arm, and Merritt, in that order. It will take a monumental effort to get off the 8 game losing streak, and an even bigger effort to win all three, but these guys have done it before and I know they can do it again. SIXTY MINUTES. PHYSICAL. UNSELFISH. DESPERATE. GOALTENDING. SPECIAL TEAMS. My buzz words/keys I guess. Keys to any team....

Great pics vs Victoria, HUGE weekend.

Hello and thanks for stopping by. Just banging out a quick post here before a nap and then down to the bus to go to Nanaimo. Huge home and home this weekend, no small test for the dogs playing the divisional leaders and their biggest rival. Should be entertaining and the dogs should have a chance is they bring their work ethic and play SIXTY MINUTES. Anything less, and it'll be a long trip home and a long weekend. It's been so long since these teams have played, that the goalies of record the previous two games for the Dogs were Ryan Lafferty and Matt Korchmar. The season series is tied 1-1. The Dogs have won- no kidding- TWO regular season games in a row in Frank Crane Arena, including last years last regular season game there. On the other side- including this year and the end of last year, The Clippers have won two straight in the Dog Pound. Odd. Should be two great games. Bring your NOISE with you if you are attending, it will be needed for sure, and boost helps. Now to the pictures! Thanks again to Judy Bailey for taking these and sending them in. Hello from Langley! Matt Auerbach and Jim Hiller interviews!

Hello all and thanks for stopping by the blog. The Bulldogs look to snap a four game winless streak tonight after dropping a 6-5 decision last night in Burnaby to the Express. The Dogs came out and layed an egg- down 5-0 after one period. They didn't play BAD, but they didn't play GREAT. Moral of the story? Don't play great and sometimes you don't get the bounces, or you don't deserve the bounces. It won't be easy tonight in Langley. Harvey Smyl and crew are doing what they do best, simply out working the opposition and winning. The Dogs are 0 and 2 in Langley this year. The season series is in favour of the Chiefs 3-2, after they won in Port Alberni last Thursday 4-2. That was another game where the Dogs played WELL, but not WELL ENOUGH. They got caught flat coming into period two, and Langley killed them with 3 goals in the first five minutes. After that it was all over. SIXTY MINUTES! How long has that been the number one problem for the Dogs?

Tonight in Langley my second intermission guest will be Ross Beebe AKA "Rosco" the educational advisor for the Langley Chiefs. Rosco is a walking encyclopedia of NCAA rules and regulations, so you don't want to miss this interview. We will talk about the BCHL All-Star game Wednesday in Surrey, and we'll also get some tips from Rosco on what young players out there should be doing if they hope to go the BCHL/NCAA route. Rosco's efforts can be seen throughout NCAA and professional hockey in North America (and I'm sure beyond) with the number of Chilliwack Chiefs he has helped get to the next level with their education. Rosco also works with the BCHL and Global Sports Camp in an educational advisor role. If you miss the interivew in the second intermission tonight I will be sure to podcast it here on the blog in the future.

Now, to some great interviews from "alumni" of the Bulldog program. Over the last couple of games I managed to catch up with former Bulldog trainer/equipment manager/athletic therapist Matt Auerbach, now with the Chilliwack Bruins of the WHL. Certianly miss Matt's friendship and comraderie on the road and at home, but at the same time I know myself and the rest of the Bulldogs fanbase and family are proud of him getting to the next level. The same must be said for former Bulldog coach and now Chilliwack Bruin head coach Jim Hiller. From us to you gentlemen, GET THOSE BRUINS IN THE PLAYOFFS!

Trade deadline nears, Dogs add Gorenszach, PICTURES, and congrats to Jamie Amos

Hello and thanks for surfing on over to the blog. Down to business. The trade deadline is coming up soon. All trades need to be submitted to the BCHL office by 6pm Wednesday night. I ranted about this on the morning show abit today, and I'll do the same here. What would I do if I were GM? Well, first off, I must say that I would be a BAD GM. Bad, because I would never be able to give up on a team, and think more about the future than the present...as in "next season" I have been with 5 championship teams at this level, so that may skew my outlook some. I am a big believer in the "you just never know" outlook. Raise your hands, ANYONE, who predicted Burnaby and Victoria in the Coastal Final? No hands, exactly as I thought. Lets further that- hands up, anyone who predicted Burnaby to win the BCHL. No hands. Alberta? Exactly. And finally the whole thing, the Royal Bank Cup? NEXT!... So, as I said, you just never know! The perfect scenario every year would be able to "build for the future, compete in the present" so that is what I hope the Dogs can do this trade deadline.

I really like the Anthony Gorenszach addition. I liked this guy all last season as a rookie, and again this year. He moves the puck well out of his own end, he can move the puck and shoot he puck well on the power play, and he can make a hit. I still remember phoning his parents last September to ask "help me out with a pronounciation please" Welcome to the team Anthony.

Assistant trainer/equipment manager Jamie Amos, with trainer Preston Charles. The 4-0-0 is to recognize Jamie's 400th game working in Junior Hockey, starting first with the Junior B. Port Alberni Bandits, and then the Bulldogs. In an odd occurance, the game was in Langley, a rink Jamie hadn't been to since 1980 something, a rink where he also worked a hockey game for the first time, as a penalty box attendant. Jamie said that back then the penalty boxes had no glass in Langley. Congrats to Jamie and thanks for all that you do for the team! They couldn't do it without you!

Thanks again to Judy Bailey for the pictures, and thanks to the Bailey family for the nice little gift they dropped off to the pressbox last Thursday, for my "blog anniversary" Yup, 1 year and counting! It almost looked like an IPOD before I opened it....have I mentioned how much I want an ipod? lol. Maybe if I update more this year Santa will be good to me next year! In all seriousness, thanks to everyone that keeps checking this, it keeps me going! Thanks for the gift as well, I certainly wasn't expecting anything.

Three more biggies for the Dogs, all against divisional opponents ahead of them in the standings. Langley at home Thursday, then down to Duncan Friday (for the first time since SEPTEMBER 15!!), and then back home against Cowichan Saturday. The Dogs are 2 and 2 against the Chiefs. Neither team has won on the road in that series yet. The Dogs are 1 and 3 against Cowichan, but they won the last time out, in November.

1 YEAR LATER! (Bulldogs vs Victoria Grizzlies tonight)

Wow, incredible, it's the 1 year anniversary of my blog today, January 4th! Everyone who thought I would keep this going a whole year raise your hands.......

That's ok. I've kept at it, and that's what matters. Yes, granted, there have been times when I've been guilty of forgetting about posting, or just not finding time. I resolve to post more, as long as you keep visiting.

Coming up this weekend- pictures from the Bulldogs mainland roadtrip to round out 2006, including pictures of the new Surrey Eagles 3rd jerseys. Also, pictures of Jamie Amos on the road with the Bulldogs working his 400th game in Junior hockey. Big congrats to Jamie!

Big game tonight for the Bulldogs as they host the Victoria Grizzlies. The Dogs haven't fared well against the Grizz this season, as they are 0 and 4 against them. I've stressed it before on the air and in the preview/recap writing for www.albernivalleybulldogs.ca , but I will stress it again- You should NEVER be too happy about losing "close" That is, unless you lost 10-4 and 9-1 before losing "close" a couple of times. After two blowouts of epic proportions the Dogs lost two hard fought heartbreakers to the Grizzlies the last two times out 5-3 and 4-2. So I guess something to build on at least, as opposed to the previous two. It will take nothing but a season best effort if the Dogs want to beat this team tonight. Should be interesting as Regan Smiley makes his return to the pound tonight, as a member of the Grizzlies.

After the 6-4 loss to the Vernon Vipers last night the Bulldogs have lost their last two games in the same painful fashion- A shorthanded goal against in a tie game in the third period. OUCH defined. The Vernon loss hurts more I think, for the fact that the team battled hard down 4-2 after two to tie it at fours. They had all the momentum, everyone was thinking SCORE, and instead, it's an own-zone turnover and a shorthanded killer with 2:39 left. At least in Langley the turnover and shorthanded goal against came three minutes into the third, not with three minutes left. In the end- tomato, tomatoh. A loss is a loss, and both game losers were shorthanded. The bright light is the fact that the team battled hard, played hard, and was RIGHT there. Just gotta eliminate that one mistake and get over the hump. Mistakes will end up in the back of the net against the Grizzlies, as the Dogs already know full well.

Hello and thanks for stopping by. Well here it is at 5:23pm Thursday night after getting going at 4:30 this morning and working ever since. Sitting down to enjoy a "Wint -o-Mint" Hot Chocolate from Serious Coffee.

There I am enjoying my great winter beverage sitting and relaxing, checking some hockey on the tube. I have to be at the radio station in 37 minutes to tape an interview with Brad Herman for the Bulldogs Broadcast Friday night against Powell River. I think, "what should I do before I have to go back to work to interview Herms?" Ahhhhh, the BLOG.

Yah yah yah I've had more than a few people taking shots at me lately about my lack of blog postings. Just off the top of my head we've got Katie, Dan, and Barb all chirping me for slacking- haha. Danthestatsman said over lunch "something something something blog.........not that you would know what a blog is Hammer" - HA. It's always great to hear of the players that have moved on and how they enjoyed their time in the Valley, isn't it? I have Brad Herman coming up Friday night and I am working on Joe Scali, Doug Krantz, Brian Stewart, and any others I can think of or people can link me up with. I'm taking a BIG STAB at making this work- embedding a video. This is one of the most amazing performances of a crowd that I've ever seen. Only the closing of the Montreal Forum and the ovation for Maurice Richard tops it. 5 minutes or so for Saku Koivu, when he returned from Cancer. You don't have to be a Habs fan or a Koivu fan to appreciate his battle, and more importantly, THE FANS. It's amazing the three of four times the public address announcer tries to talk and the crowd just ROARS him down, amazing. Here goes nothing..... EDIT- alright, 3rd time a charm I managed to get the video to work!

BULLDOGS- Huge weekend, facing two teams below them in the standings and two teams they are a combined 0 and 7 against this season. Friday is the Teddy Bear Toss. Buy your bears, bring your bears, and chuck them on the ice when the Dogs score. (knock on wood)

Sunday afternoon it's the Surrey Eagles, and the canned food/non-perishable food drive. Bring those items to the door and you'll get paper for the airplane toss to win a turkey.

AND

Get on your feet before the puck drops before the game and before the periods. That's a request from Harry Zolnierczyk and the players as a whole. You have no idea how much it gets the guys going. Home ice, every bit helps. Harry recently told me he's been banging his stick on the glass behind the bench trying to get the fans going the last couple of home games. With Harry out the guys will miss that energy, so do all you can please. HOME ICE- every bit helps.

Hello from Vernon!

Hello from Vernon and thanks for checking the blog. Tough week and weekend for the Dogs. A 2-0 loss to Powell River Tuesday, their fourth of the season to Powell River including exhibition. Tonight (Friday) it's the Vipers in Vernon, Saturday the Silverbacks in Salmon Arm, and Sunday the trip finishes as the Dogs take on the Centennials in Merritt.

A special heads up- Former Bulldog Devin Timberlake will be the second intermission "feature guest" from the Mulitplex in Vernon tonight.



Here's some pictures for you. I couldn't bring a camera this trip, so I have to post last years. First some shots of the Multiplex in Vernon. Then Merritt. Sadly, I don't have any pictures to show you of Salmon Arm. I didn't have a camera last year when we made the Salmon Arm trip. Only shot I could get was from the Sunwave Centre website.

OH RIGHT......I have a blog!

'Ello all, thanks for checking the blog again! Sorry I've been so lax latley. Had a month of nothing but 3 game weekends all month, and short turn arounds- starting Thursday, ending Sunday. It's been tough to keep up work, better yet this blog. Between the broadcasts, the morning show, and writing for the team website, I haven't even known when one week has ended and another has begun. To make matters really worse, I've had some major headaches happening away from work that have taken up all of my time.....Enough of the excuses! I will make it up to you in the coming days and weeks. Getting caught up now with a Sunday off at the end of last week and just two games this weekend. Heading down to Victoria Saturday to watch a Victoria Salmon Kings game and take a night off. I can't wait!

Two big games this weekend, Langley at home Thursday, then over to Burnaby Friday.

HIGHLIGHTS HILITES HIGHLITES however you spell it!

Hello and thanks for stopping by the blog. Sorry I haven't posted much latley, just been too darn busy with radio work and bulldog work and broadcast work and holidays and all these three game weekends with quick turnarounds. Not much free time. Today I'm posting highlights from the last 4 Bulldog victories. Mostly just the goals. I'll throw in the obligatory apology for only being able to post what I post. Also an apology to the other teams for not posting THEIR highlights. It's a BULLDOG blog afterall. I'd like to post a full game highlight reel both sides but I just don't have the time or resources to swing it. So I hope what I post will do!

Bulldogs 6 Burnaby 3

One of the most amazing starts to a game in a while. Highlights of goals, and a couple scraps. Also Jeff Manryk's first BCHL goal. And YES, I do call him "shooter" Why? Well that's an interesting story. Sitting in front of Manryk and Lockwood on the interior roadtrip, I must've heard SHOOTER out of the two of them 586 times over the weekend. I told them that I was going to start swinging, if they didn't settle down with the "shooter" comments every 10 seconds. Jeff then asked me if I would call him shooter on the radio when he got his first goal. We then struck a deal. I agreed to call him "shooter" when he scored on 2 conditions. 1) he scored within the next 4 games. and 2) they shut up with the shooter stuff. Congrats to Jeff for the goal, especially nice in front of his mom and dad who were out from Thunderbay, Ont, for that game. Had the pleasure of meeting them both, great people. Jeff and Cody kept up their end of the bargain, they stopped the SHOOTER all the time, and Jeff then scored. So I had to keep up my end of the bargain. Bulldogs 6 Nanaimo 5 OT

Big win for the Dogs over the Clippers ending their unbeaten run. The biggest thing was the Dogs bouncing back from getting throttled 2 nights earlier 10-4 by the Grizzlies at home.

Good win bouncing back from another ugly defeat at the hands of Victoria, 9-1.

Bulldogs 5 Burnaby 3

Solid win after a week of changes around the Dogs. Great shift by Harry, I want to see the video of that. Great goals by Ruel and Kremyr as well. Kremyr the nice feed to Ruel for his first one, and a nice finish by Ruel on his second one. The Kremyr goal was huge and REALLY got the dog pound "barking" as the crowd was really roaring.

Another 4 out of 6 point weekend for the Dogs.

Hello and thanks for checking out the blog! Another good weekend for the Dogs, two wins and one loss. And what a loss it was.....A loss that cannot be forgotten and must be learned from. However the win in the Frank Crane Arena Sunday makes that loss seem more than just one game ago. I'll see if I can get some audio up in the next couple of days. Busy busy getting ready for another three game weekend. I'm PUMPED that I finally have some picture submissions being sent in! I've only been asking for almost a year now, and I've probably received about 10 pictures. First, is a picture from Judy. She says that they layed up CDog before the game.....hope it's not a 4 to 6 week injury for CDog. Must give the Clippers mascot some credit. He's a good one, good natured, always poses for pics and is funny and good to the other teams fans. Great pic Judy thanks for sending.
