Dogs end 2009 on a 7 game winning streak, 12 point lead on the Coast....
It was the 8th win in as many tries for the Dogs over the Caps, sweeping the season series.
The Dogs had all they could handle in the Caps, who played a great game all night.
Head Coach and GM Nolan Graham was less than impressed with the efforts of his troops last night.
In the players defense, it can't be easy to treat your opposition the same, and not take them lightly, when last game out you beat them 10-2.
Last night is a good example of why you try to play every game the same and why you just worry about your own game though.
Who would have ever thought for one SINGLE SECOND that we'd be sitting here on the last day of 2009 talking about a Bulldog team that has a TWELVE point lead on the rest of the Conference?
99% of people wouldn't have believed that the Dogs would have a 12 point hold on a PLAYOFF spot, better yet the CONFERENCE LEAD.
Just plain wow.
Now just keep it going fellas!
While the Dogs have the next three days off from game action, they are still busy in the community as they'll be out at Safeway on Saturday, hoping to meet some of their fans.
Meet the Bulldogs at Safeway
Press Release
December 29th 2009
The Alberni Valley Bulldogs and Safeway will join forces on Saturday January 2nd from 1:00-4:00pm. Bulldogs players will be signing autographs, selling tickets for charity and helping the Safeway staff.
The first 50 people that show up in Bulldogs apparel will win free tickets to an upcoming game.
Don’t miss out on this great opportunity!
Next action for the Dogs is Sunday afternoon when they host the Burnaby Express, a 2:30 puck drop at the Dog Pound. It's the last home game for a couple weeks, as the team heads out for six straight on the road after that so spread the word and PACK THE SHACK!
It was nice to see a great crowd last night, now lets just get a bigger one for Sunday!
Great job by my co-pilot last night, Alberni Golf Club Head Pro Bruce MacDonald, who filled in for Rick Schievink as he's on the Team Pacific staff for the U17's in Timmins.
Not bad at all for a radio debut...Bruce admitted he was nervous, but I thought he did a great job and he'll be back on Sunday afternoon as well.
Turns out he's a coachable in the booth as I am on the golf course, so we work well together HAHA.
Have a safe and smart finish to 2009 tonight, please and thanks everyone!

No discipline for Dogs, line up tonight...
What I can tell you is that the Dogs at least won't be having any healthy bodies sittting in the stands as they didn't pick up and suspensions from the league office from the stuff that happened in Mondays game.
I'm aware that the Caps got hit with suspensions pretty hard in comparison, but as I haven't seen any official update or release from the league on it I'm not commenting further.

Linesman critical after neck cut while breaking up fight
The danger that is there for officials trying to break it all up.
Read more from TSN.ca
The officials did a great job breaking up the stuff in Duncan on Monday.
Last home game of 2009 tonight, Dogs host Capitals
What do you expect out of a rematch two days after a 10-2 win for one team, with a couple mini line brawls and a goalie running when the game was out of reach?
More of the same? Or two well behaved teams after a stern talk from the league office to stay away from the shenanigans?
Will there be suspensions? Not sure yet. Just one mans opinion here - but the suspensions or lack thereof could dictate how tonight plays out.
Make no mistake - points are important to both teams. The Surrey Eagles burned one of their games in hand on the Dogs last night as they lost 5-1 to Nanaimo. The Dogs lead still sits at 10 points with the Eagles having a game in hand. The Burnaby Express burned one of their games in hand on the Capitals as they lost 7-5 to Burnaby. So the Capitals still lead them by three points with the Express now holding one game in hand.
The Dogs are a perfect 7 and 0 against the Capitals this season. With this being the last meeting of the season between the Caps, the Dogs will want to secure the sweep - hopefully just as bad as the Caps will want to avoid the sweep.
It will be easy for the Dogs to take the Caps lightly after beating them by eight goals - hopefully the Dogs remember the game BEFORE Christmas, the hard fought 3-2 game, instead of the game AFTER Christmas.
At this level or any level, if you take your opponent lightly - you have already lost. Or you have at least made losing alot more likely.
Catch the pregame tonight on 93.3 THE PEAK FM at 6:45 with the puck drop and play-by-play at 7:00.

Upon further review - multiple fights are reviewed
Some passionate Bulldog fans have contacted the league office showing their displeasure with the game last night, even forwarding my post from earlier this morning to the league office.
I have subsequently heard back from the league - and I have an apology to make - as the league changed their protocol on multiple fight situations this season and I wasn't aware of it.
There is NO automatic suspension for the second fight in the same stoppage.
All multiple fight situations are reviewed by the league office and disciplinarian Dave Sales.
Good to know, and my apologies for not being aware of the rule change.
Some justification as to why I thought the rules were the way I interpreted them -
I said in my earlier post that the Dogs "have been burned by this already this season"
That was a reference to the Alberni vs. Nanaimo game on October 3rd when David Dziurzynski was suspended for being the second fight in the same stoppage - when there was an instigator penalty against Nanaimo on the play.
Dziurzynski in that fight if you remember took several punches before finally having enough and dropping his gloves to defend himself.
Yet he was still suspended.
I inquired with a league official after the fact if the suspensions were still automatic and I was told they indeed were. Which made sense with "Dizzy" (sorry getting tired of typing Dziurzynski) still getting a one game vacation. It seems that was incorrect though.
Quite simply - the league might have just seen that one differently than I did. Which is quite understandable with my connection to the Bulldogs and their point of neutrality.
It will be interesting to see what sort of discipline comes or doesn't come down as a result of last night.
As it stands now - the Dogs stand to lose Warren Muir and Tyler Berkholtz unless the league sees otherwise.
I won't throw any further judgment into the stuff last night than I already have.
It is great to know that there isn't a "defend yourself or get suspended" choice for the BCHL's players as I earlier stated. And please accept my apologies for believing that was the case.
As I said in my earlier post today - I'm a fan of the leagues attempts to curb multiple fights. As much as I like to watch a gong show like the rest of some fans - I am from Flin Flon after all - but it's not what the scouts want, it's not what the parents of young players who are choosing what league to play in want.

Dogs win 6th straight, rematch Wednesday night
What could go wrong did for the Caps, as the Dogs scored early and often to start this one off as a laugher and end it as a laugher with a 10-2 final. The Dogs were up 1-0 before the game was a minute old, 2-0 before it was seven minutes old, and then 3-0 less than a minute later.
The Caps did a good job to show some resiliency to get on the board to make it 3-1, and they also answered back when the Dogs quickly made it 4-1 as it was still a hockey game at 4-2 Dogs after one.
The score stayed that way until the floodgates opened again in the final 10 minutes of the second when the Dogs struck three times for a 7-2 lead after two.
The Dogs opened the third the way they opened the game, scoring before the period was a minute old on a nice Mark MacMillan drive to the net to make it 8-2. Another one from Tye Lewis made it 9-2 just a couple minutes later.
Then things got a little stupid, a la Slap Shot. Ryan Green and Cole Derickson entered a faceoff in their end with either a plan - or instructions - to jump Sam Mitchell and Warren Muir. The last thing Muir wanted to do was drop his gloves with Derickson after Green grabbed Mitchell off the faceoff, as Muir had just returned from a long injury layoff. Now, unless the league office takes a hard look and realizes the situation and how it began - he'll be suspended for tomorrow for the second fight in the same stoppage.
The linesman did a heck of a job to not let the two-fight scrum erupt into a full out line brawl. Caps D man Jeff Apted had dropped his gloves in the middle of the brough-ha-ha looking for someone, anyone to dance with - but the Dogs were smart and stayed out of the crap - that would be a minimum two game suspension for anyone that would have tangled with him. As the linesman were busy breaking up the two scraps going at once, Apted crossed the centre red line and engaged the Bulldogs bench. Credit to Trent Dorais for being disciplined and not doing anything stupid as Apted got right in his face.
After all the dust settled, there were no penalties called that ended up on the board that saw either team with a bigger man-advantage than they had going into the fight.
This is where I question the officials game management. It was obvious to me, and everyone in the rink that there was some intent and planning with the two fights off the faceoff. And it was obvious to me that there was potential for more CRAP. Mabe putting a team down two men isn't a surefire way to stop anything else from happening - but for my money it's about the only thing I've ever seen work. When a team is significantly outnumbered on the ice, they aren't usually as interested in starting things.
Play resumes, and just one minute later Brendan MacDonald intentionally hits Frank Slubowski as the goaltender is down covering the puck. More mayhem ensues.
Sorry, but in my humble opinion if you are intentionally hitting the goalie - you have no business playing. Hopefully the league agrees. The Dogs might lose another player to suspension out of the second fracas as each team was given two fighting penalties on the same stoppage again.
What angers me is that Frank Riddle didn't even drop his gloves, got jumped while on the ice, and he still gets a five minute major for fighting! Are you kidding me?
Again, hopefully the league takes a look at all the garbage, and they make some decisions that override the calls the referee made that might see some people suspended that shouldn't be.
It's really tough for the officials when a good ole fashion gong show breaks out to get all the calls right. That's why I hope the league takes a look at some video.
Does the league take any action here to stop what might be a big black eye if another circus breaks out here at the Pound tomorrow night?
Here's hoping.

Back at it - Dogs @ Caps
While the Dogs have been back at it since Boxing Day I just got to town last night so I'm playing catch up so please bear with me!
It was a great holiday for me in Flin Flon with 98% spent with family and 2% with friends but it was a nice mix as I don't get to see my family nearly enough. And it was only -20 most days so I didn't die due to exposure either, although I learned how soft living on the Island has made me because I was cursing the cold the whole time.
I feel like I had two Christmases with my being able to attend the World Juniors again. What an amazing experience! More on that later when I have some time.
Catch the pregame tonight from Duncan 6:45pm with the play-by-play at 7:00 on 93.3 The Peak FM.
The Bulldogs line up tonight -
Scratch Ryan Corbiell as he's still nursing an injury.
ADD Warren Muir, who makes his return to the line up after being injured November 15th against Burnaby. Muir will be a very nice addition to the line up, a veteran guy who is physical and can score goals - 10 in 28 games. Hopefully he comes back the same way he left because he was absolutely red hot at the time of his injury.

Merry Christmas! A Very Merry Bulldog Christmas, A Very Merry BCHL Christmas...
A hard fought game by both teams tonight, won by the Dogs on the strength of several great Frank Slubowski stops in the final minute of the game as the Capitals pushed hard for the equalizer.
With the win the Dogs have won five in a row, and they take an eight point lead on the Surrey Eagles into the Christmas Break for first place in the Coastal Conference.

Dogs over Timberwolves 9-1, down to Duncan today, A Very Merry Bulldog/BCHL Christmas!
The Dogs scored on their first four power plays and finished the game 6 for 8 on the man advantage. Wow. That makes it three straight games for the Dogs with at least 3 power play goals - Williams Lake, Quesnel, Williams Lake.
The Dogs were led by David Dziurzynski (2g-3a=5pts) Mitch MacMillan (3g-1a=4pts) and Kevin Ross (0g-4a=4pts)
It was also nice to see Frank Riddle get his first career goal.
One more to go now, and it will be a tough one as the Dogs head down to Duncan to take on the red-hot Capitals, winners of five in a row.
A couple neat Christmas specials for you today. "A Very Merry Bulldog Christmas" runs in the first intermission show, while "A Very Merry BCHL Christmas" runs in the second intermission show.
Bulldog players and staffers as well as BCHL coaches and broadcasters will get out their Christmas greetings and they'll let us know what is on their wish list to get under the tree Christmas morning.

Dogs host Timberwolves - LAST HOME GAME BEFORE CHRISTMAS!
Job #1 for the Dogs is to not take the Timberwolves lightly. Yes - they are playing their fourth game in as many days. Yes they are in the bottom on the Interior Conference. Yes the Dogs beat the T-Wolves 5-3 a week ago tonight in Williams Lake.
YES - the T-wolves DID play the Dogs very tough in that game. And YES this is their last game before the Christmas break.
While I know it can also be a distraction, I'm guessing the excitement of going home and seeing family and friends will be a motivator to the T-Wolves. They will see the proverbial "light at the end of the tunnel" today when they start thinking about this game.
Now, does that mean they'll check out early and they wont be into this one? Or does it mean they have all day to think about going home and focus on how they want to go out on a winning note?
It's easy to forget that these are all just kids - young men, etc. Going home for Christmas after being gone from home for a while is a very very big deal.
Catch the pregame show tonight at 6:45 with the play-by-play at 7:00 on 93.3 The Peak FM (click the listen live link if you are out of radio range) or get the Pay-Per-View broadcast through the league website www.bchl.ca
Everyone in the Interior did the Dogs a favour last night - Surrey lost, Victoria lost, Nanaimo lost. Now the Dogs need to do themselves a favour.
See you tonight, talk to you tonight!!

Friday Bulldog Bits....
A couple random thoughts and other things.
Look for the Bulldogs out in the community today as they are taking full advantage of their day off by getting out and getting involved. This morning the team will be out delivering all the 900 or so teddy bears that you all threw a couple weeks back. The benefactors - patients at West Coast General Hospital, Fir Park, Echo Village, The Salvation Army, and MORE.
Later, the team will be delivering Christmas Trees to several needy families that they have sponsored for Christmas. OUTSTANDING.
And finally tonight, the guys will be working the Salvation Army Kettles from 6pm to 8pm at Walmart!
Way to go Dogs!
----
It's tough to start this conversation without a disclaimer. The disclaimer being - I'm NOT taking anything away from Laurent Brossoit in Cowichan. Especially because he's a Port Alberni native!
Brossoit was named the BCHL player of the week last week. He had two appearances, and gave up no goals. One was half a game in Quesnel, the other was a full start in Williams Lake. Sounds like a good week.
WHEN will the Dogs get some love when it comes to the BCHL player of the week award?
Tough to believe that the top team on the Coast hasn't had one player of the week nod yet. It's not like they don't have the league's top goal scorer, and with one of the leagues top 5 ranked goalies...I understand it's tough to spread the recognition around though.
Just last week alone - Mitch MacMillan - 5 goals and 3 assists for 8 points in four games. Mark MacMillan - 3 goals and six assists for 9 points in four games. David Dziurzynski - 1 goal 4 assists 5 points in three games.
All while the team went 3 on 3 on the road. I'm sure every team has a case or two over the last week for their guys too though, right?
One more second on Mark MacMillan. I'm not sure people get how good this kid is. Is it that he's overshadowed by his linemates?
This guy is the top scoring 17 year old in the ENTIRE LEAGUE. Anyone else notice that yet?
Yet he's not good enough for a roster spot in the prospects game, or for the All Star game?
Well it doesn't appear that he needs the recognition anyway. Several NCAA schools at the very top of the rankings are drooling over this guy. And I think they know a good player when they see one.
No offense to any other players of the week or players on the prospect game roster or all star roster. I'm jus' sayin'
I won't even get started on Kevin Ross being left out. 5th in the league in scoring for defenceman. And his best attributes don't even show up in stats either. Oh well, I don't think not making a BCHL All Star team will hurt Ross much when he's at Princeton next season.
I'd apologize for all this tire pumping I'm doing, but I know I'm just like any other fan and supporter of their own team - I want to see the guys I follow recognized.
----
HUGE congrats goes out to the Bulldogs organization, the ADSS Leadership Class, and the community at large for their efforts in the "Building a better community tomorrow by fighting hunger today" campaign.
The goal was the weight of the team in non perishable food items - 4002 pounds. So far, with over 4500 items donated, it appears the goal has been raised. Outstanding job everyone!

How cool is this? 'Dogs forward Trent Dorais will represent our country this summer in Austria at the World Ball Hockey Championships...Here's an email I got from Trent's mom!
Sponsorship of 2010 Junior Team Canada member Trent Dorais
The Canadian Ball Hockey Association (CBHA), which was founded in 1977, has played an integral role in the growth and development of the sport at the international level. Our nation has quickly built a heritage of success on the international field, and currently are the reigning world champions at the U16, U18 and U20 levels. After capturing gold at the inaugural World Junior Championship in 2000, Canada reclaimed gold in 2008. We are now seeking corporate partners for our 2010 campaign of Junior Team Canada and their trip to Villach, Austria.
The CBHA, is a proud Associate Member of the Canadian Hockey Association. With some 70,000, aged 6 to 30, playing in registered leagues across our country every summer, the sport is recognized as a growing force in amateur athletics, and clearly represents the grass roots level of hockey because its ease of play and inexpensiveness attracts peoples of all ethnic and economic backgrounds.
Our National Junior Team program will include players, aged 18 and 19, from across Canada.
After applying the limited funding we have to date, the out of pocket expense to the players is a staggering $2,500 each, for flights, accommodations, ground transportation, medical & training supplies, team doctor, and equipment. With this cost, we risk alienating some of our best athletes and denying them of a tremendous life experience. 100% of all corporate donations and contributions will be used to reduce the financial burden of the players.
Junior Team Canada will feature 24 players from across the country and will face stiff competition from the perennial favorites Czech Republic, Slovakia, and the U.S.A. However, their biggest challenge may be fund raising for the trip with a budget in excess of $80,000. The event is expected to have as many as ten teams competing for the prestigious International Street & Ball Hockey Federation's World Junior Championship Cup. Along with Canada, Bosnia, Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Italy, Slovakia, Switzerland, United States of America and the Austrian hosts are attending.
If you wish any further information, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Thank you for your time and consideration.

SKATE WITH DOGS TONIGHT + my Christmas Present to you!
Skate rentals are free!
I was at the rink today, and I'm always floored when I see the set up. The way they turn the Coulson side into that display is just plain incredible!!
Sorry the blog has been quiet for the most part the last couple of days. I have a good reason for it at least - I have been very very busy the last two days making my Christmas present to ALL of you and ALL of the BCHL!
Yes, it's that time of year again!
Coming soon to a radio station near you and here on the blog you'll get my high tech version of a Christmas Card. But this is a card to you from not just me, but the entire Bulldog roster and staff!
It is called - "A Very Merry Bulldog Christmas" where the players and staff will send out their Christmas greetings, AND they'll tell us what they have on their "wish list" for what they want under their tree on Christmas morning! It's always a neat experience talking to all the guys to see how they go with this one!
"A Very Merry BCHL Christmas" is where I attempt to contact the entire BCHL. It might not seem like much, "attempting" to contact all 17 BCHL Head Coaches, and all 17 BCHL play-by-play broadcasters. Trust me, it isn't always the easiest task....some of these people are very very busy!
So far I have made pretty good progress, so wish me luck. It's the same format with the coaches and radio guys as it is with the Bulldogs - they will send out their holiday greetings and then tell me what they have on their wish list.
All very fun stuff, being able to talk one on one with the great people that make up this league and make it as great as it is.
Both are coming up this weekend!

Dogs still 18th in Canada... 8 games 13 days done.
Another 9 hours or so on the bus, great job as always by Bulldogs Bussie Ronnie Sandberg.
The latest CJAHL rankings are out, and a 3 win 1 loss record sees the Dogs sit unchanged at 18th.
What a grind December has been for the Dogs. EIGHT games in 13 days to open month is just nuts. In my six previous seasons here I can barely remember more than a handful of four game weeks, better yet two of them back to back. The guys are certainly deserving of a little rest after this stretch and they'll get it now as they have just two games until Christmas, and they won't play til Saturday night at home when the Williams Lake Timberwolves are in town.
Its been quite a while since the team came home from a perfect 3 game road trip. It was by no means easy, but 3 w's is all that matters in the end. Way to go guys.
We'll get a little snooze in here and then its up and on the boat to finally get home tomorrow. Snow on the Mainland and snow apparently big time on the Island tomorrow...should be interesting.

Recap tidbits..
I owe referee Nick Swaine an apology. I was quite adamant that he had the Bulldogs first goal wrong, that Mitch MacMillan had scored it.
I found out on the bus that Mark actually tipped it.
Doh.
So for the second game in a row I thought Mitch had the record, but I was wrong. Doh.
I can for CERTAIN tell you that the second goal on the boxscore is incorrect, it was Tye Lewis who scored FROM Mark MacMillan. And on the 5th goal it was Mitch who set up Dziurzynski with an incredible spinarama between the legs back pass.
In the end its two points, we're back at the hotel safe and sound, and its bed time.
More tomorrow as the Dogs attempt to go 3 for 3.
