B.C. Women's Amateur Championship update, THE PEAK at the Canada Day Parade tomorrow!

A quick update on the B.C. Women's Amateur Championship with two rounds now completed at the Alberni Golf Club. Port Alberni Native Christina Proteau (above) is in the same position today as she was after the first round, tied for 4th place, four shots off the pace set by Anica Yoo of Port Coquitlam and Taylor Kim of Surrey who sit at +1 143 after 36 holes. A good day yesterday for Jackie Little, as she shot a 73 to improve to a tie for 11th place after she was tied for 19th after the first round. The final local golfer in the field had a great bounce back day yesterday as Alyssa Herkel got herself back into contention with a 79 to sit at +24 166 through two rounds. The 79 was a huge improvement from her 87 in the opening round.

Keep yourself up to date by visiting the tournament website HERE for scoring updates, by listening to 93.3 The Peak FM , or better yet get out to the Alberni Golf Club to see the action live for yourself as the public is encouraged to come out to see some great golf!

The 2011 Canada Day Parade goes tomorrow with the theme of "Celebrate Our Community" as we celebrate Canada's 144th Birthday!

Huge thanks to the Port Alberni Folkfest Multicultural Society as they have invited 93.3 The Peak to host the Parade's "Reviewing Stand" at Safeway. The Peak's Operations Manager David Wiwchar, Afternoon Drive host Jolie McMullan and myself will be up on the stand with a public address system giving you details on the floats as they "float" by.

The parade gets going at 10am and runs down 10th Avenue from Burde to Hollywood. The Food Fair & entertainment follows the parade at Glenwood Centre, kicking off at 11:30 with a flag raising and official opening ceremonies!

The Alberni Valley Bulldogs would like to announce that 95 F Evan Tironese
has committed for the 2011-2012 season.

The Qualicum Beach, B.C native, played for the Notre Dame Argos of the Saskatchewan Midget AAA league. Tironese posted 21 goals, 22 assists for 43 points in 52 games last season. The 5’8” 160 pound Tironese will fulfill the new BCHL requirement that all teams must carry a 1995 born player on the new 21 man roster.

Bulldogs to announce player signing tomorrow, Alberni Golf Club Update,

Just a short note from the Bulldogs - I received a heads up from the team yesterday that they are holding a Press Release tomorrow for a player signing and jersey presentation at 11:30am.....so get to the rink and find out who the newest Dog is!

Tonnes of stuff happening at the Alberni Golf Club! Thanks as always to Gerry for the update!

Holy Moley!!! Dave Gray did something that has never been done before on the Alberni Golf Course. Dave recorded the first ever hole in one on the 272 yard par 4 sixth hole on Friday June 17th. That’s one for the record books, congratulations Dave.

Although the numbers were slightly down , by all reports the West Coast Amateur was a success again this year, with some outstanding golf being played.

Due to the Ladies West Coast Amateur being held on Sunday the Men’s Club will be cancelled. Look for the Aines and Tyler par points format in two weeks.

Another good turnout for the Stableford Tournament on Monday. Bill Christian, took top honours compiling an impressive 48 points. It is nice to see someone else in the winners circle besides, not mentioning any names but his initials are Bob Price. There was a tie for second place between Ted Williams and Derek McGregor each racking up 42 points.

Next with 39 points were Jim Rhodes, Keith Randall, Rick Paul and Gene Kimoto. Then came Frank Penzel, Dennis Hillman, Don Ferster and Bruce Browne all with 38 points. With 37 points was the group of Bob Turner, Livio Tedesco, Bill Lekich and Frank Hastings. The final prize went to Bill Barrett with 36 points.

The closest to the pin went to Frank Hastings on #2, Sharon Hillman on #4, Bill Barrett on #13 and Steve Acland on #17. Draws for sleeves of balls were won by Sandy Duguid, Jacques Giovetti, Ken Sander and Ray Nicklin, Thirty dollars in club money  was won by Steve Acland, Jack Sparks, Stan Hebert, Ann Brooks, and Jules Gaudreault. The two meat draws were won by Mark Anderson and Barry Bowman. Please  collect your winnings in the Pro. Shop. Next Stableford takes place on July 18th.

NEXT week, it's the B.C. Women's Amateur Championship....check back here, and tune in to 93.3 The Peak FM, for more details in the coming days!

Fractured Vertebrae for Mason Raymond, WAKE UP NHL, Bulldogs Celebrate 10th Anniversary,

I'm at a loss for words on the state of the NHL, and their handling of the Stanley Cup Finals. I know I have said my two bits on the Aaron Rome hit on Nathan Horton, and the subsequent fallout and suspension. At the same time, its hard not to go back to that incident, and make some comparisons to last night's hit by Johnny Boychuk on Mason Raymond. And I use the term "hit" very loosely. That wasn't a HIT. That was a bulldog/ standing pile-driver, to steal some wrestling terms. It was more wrestling than hockey. And a lot more like wrestling than Aaron Rome's hit on Horton, coming less than a second after Horton delivered his pass - that he then admired, instead of protecting himself. Watch them both and tell me what was more of a "Hockey Play"

The NHL said the lateness of the hit, combined with the injury, factored into the suspension. I am not even going to begin with the argument on how injuries sustained shouldn't factor in the length of suspensions, or whether any suspension is deserved. HOWEVER, since the NHL earlier on in this series has said that these factors come into play, lets consider how late the Boychuk hit was - Raymond NEVER touched the puck, and the injury sustained - broken vertebrae in his neck or back. Yet the NHL announced last night they won't look further into the incident. WHAT?! Raymond is out 4 to 6 months at the very least - who knows whether he will even walk correctly again, better yet ever play hockey again - but the NHL has no problem with the hit. None of the 4 officials on the ice last night were capable of making the call - whether it's BOARDING - easily a case for that based on the definition of the rules - or INTERFERENCE - again easily a case of that it was certainly SOMETHING. I'm aware it was an somewhat innocent looking play in full speed...or was that just because the puck was already gone in the other direction, it was 20 seconds into the game, and it happened to a visiting player? On the replays it is obvious to me that there was intent from Boychuk - of course not intent to break a neck or back - but intent to drive a defenseless player into the boards. In my humble opinion, the two players didn't just contact each other and "go in" to the wall.

Boychuk on the replay appears to DRIVE Raymond in. Raymond's head is between his legs, he's bent at the waist, and Boychuk places his stick over his neck/back and forces him in. Of course a neck and back isn't meant to take that impact when it's bent that way. Of course it's expecially not meant to take that impact with nowhere for the head/neck or back to go to release the pressure of the impact - the broken neck or back vertebrae is a result of the head being restrained between Boychuk's legs. I am not a doctor - but that's my guess, what's yours?

So in summary - the NHL has taught us this series that stepping up at the defending blue line and finishing your check on a player who had the puck less than a second before, who is admiring his pass and isn't defending himself is NOT ALLOWED. It's a major suspension, the biggest in the history of the finals. At the same time, driving a defenseless player back first in the boards with a wrestling move and breaking his neck or back IS ALLOWED.

Is this the way you want hockey to be headed? I'm disgusted. And I'm hoping for the best for Mason Raymond. I don't think he'll be back in the building tomorrow, a la Nathan Horton, handing out a special jacket.

Alberni Valley Bulldogs Celebrate their 10th Anniversary

The Alberni Valley Bulldogs, a member of the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) are proud to celebrate their 10th Anniversary of Junior A hockey in Port Alberni.

History

Ten years has gone by incredibly fast in the short tenure of the Alberni Valley Bulldogs Junior A Hockey team in our community. Once considered a long shot to ever have a team, the Alberni Valley franchise is now considered one of the premier franchises in the BCHL. Over 70 Bulldog alumni have gone on to university or college hockey and more importantly most of these have finished degrees or diplomas. Many alumni have had the opportunity to play professionally and just this past year two have signed NHL contracts. Few communities support their teams like the Alberni Valley. The Bulldogs are the envy of most teams due to their incredible community support. Without ongoing community support in the form of people in the stands and sponsors helping out, teams don‟t survive. It was not an easy journey for the Bulldogs to end up in Port Alberni and not one that could likely get repeated in today‟s economic reality. There were numerous people in the valley who had hoped for years to get a Junior A team in our community but the obstacles were many.
First came the new Alberni Valley Multiplex project ;lead by Arena Society President Wendy Ewing and her Board of people such as Karen Mallon, Ron Paulson, Debbie Bratt, Ian Bratt and Vice President Tom McEvay. With the completion of the new Alberni Valley Multiplex in 2001 the dream of a Junior A franchise was in reach.

Once Ewing and her committee had the ear of the BCHL they were able to ask the question “what would it take to get approval to move the Bulldogs to the Alberni Valley?” In an interesting “Wizard of Oz” type scenario the league put what they likely thought were insurmountable criteria on the table – 1000 season ticket holders and $100,000 in Corporate Sponsorship. The governors, however, didn‟t know Ewing or the tenacity of the people of the Alberni Valley. Ewing and her team of volunteers such as Ron Paulson, Bruce McDonald, Les Dorion and Alf Thompson eventually exceeded both of these targets. When the Board still didn‟t give approval a flurry of calls and last minute pressure from the Port Alberni mob won the day and approval was granted and the rest is history.

The 2011-2012 season celebrates the 10th anniversary of the Alberni Valley Bulldogs. The team has gone through ups and downs, wins and losses and has had ownership, coach, staff and player changes throughout the years. The only one constant that has always been here is the community and the fans. The Bulldogs still stand as one of the most desired Junior A franchises in the league and owe it to the unconditional community support.

For most of the players who come to the valley their time in Alberni creates some of the fondest memories of their young lives. For many, it is a period that shapes their future and for some it is a time that helps them achieve the dream of a university hockey scholarship and maybe even ultimately a career in professional hockey. When they leave us we follow their lives with interest and pride because to us they will always be an Alberni Valley Bulldog.

The Bulldogs are also more than the individual players who play here. The Bulldogs are a source of pride, an opportunity for people to come together to socialize, to laugh, to cheer and to sometimes commiserate in disappointment. The team is our team in good times and in bad times. The players will all tell anyone who listens that the unconditional support of the fans and the community is the most incredible feeling for them. It is the same feeling we want in each of our families and in everything we do as a community. It is a feeling that builds community and helps us define who we are as citizens of the Alberni Valley. As we mark their 10th year, it is time to recognize and celebrate the contributions our Bulldogs teams have made to the Alberni Valley.

Accomplishments/Quick Facts

 Over 70 players to the NCAA and Canadian Universities
 Several Players have gone on to play professional
 Have raised $100,000 for various charities
 Involved in Breast Cancer, Variety, Raise a Reader and numerous other Charities
 Bulldogs volunteer numerous hours in local schools
 Over 200 successful classes taken at North Island College

Message from the Mayor of Port Alberni Ken McRae:

“The Alberni Valley Bulldogs are an important part of our community, offering affordable, family-friendly entertainment to thousands of people each year. Their contributions over the last ten years have touched the lives of many people and had a positive impact on both our local economy and social well-being. The entire organizations, including the players and management consistently dedicate their time and resources to numerous charitable causes and mentorship programs with youth.”

The Future

The future of the team is very bright with the returning core of 16 players. With a top line of Casey Bailey, Josh Mitchell and Dylan Nowakowski all returning to the lineup the Bulldogs expect them to be one of the top lines in the league. Add in 3rd year player Tyler Berkholtz , Captain Trent Dorais and Sawyer Mick the team will have plenty of physicality and team toughness . The speed of Justin Morello and Lars Hepso will add even more depth and creativity to the offense. On defense the team returns four puck moving skilled defenseman in Kenney Morrison, Connor Varley, Tanner Hicks and Marley Keca. In goal the team will have newly signed collegiate goalie Max Fenkell and returning up and comer goalie Kiefer Giroux. With a solid core of players returning and key recruits being added the Bulldogs look to be at the top of their conference.

Message from the Bulldogs Head Coach Paul Esdale

“We learned a lot from last year on what type of team we want to be and what it takes to win in the new BCHL. Although we went through some growing pains last year we really believe we have set ourselves up for success this season and beyond. We will have a very competitive, highly skilled fast team this season. The recruiting class for this season is the best we have had in years and we look forward to securing these players to the roster throughout the summer. With the returning core and the new recruits the team will have a fresh new look and will resemble a college team. We will play with high speed and skill and put pressure on teams. We will forecheck hard and play at both ends of the rink. The team will be exciting and entertaining to watch and I know people will be impressed with the high level of skill the new recruits will bring. With the addition of these young players and the returning core the future of hockey in the Alberni Valley is very bright.”

Canucks take 3-2 series lead with 1-0 Game 6 win, Bulldogs add Zach Todd, Dziurzynski wins Calder Cup, ON LOCATION at Van Isle Ford today!

Wow, what a game. Great bounce back game for the Canucks, and for Roberto Luongo, who was perfect with the shut out and 1st star honours. In this tournament goals for and goals against don't matter. 8-1, 4-0, 1-0, they all mean the same in the end. There is no aggregate carryover from the last game a la soccer. And the Canucks with their three nail biter victories are one game up on the Bruins, with their two dominant wins in the Stanley Cup Finals.

Wow, how about that officiating? As horrible as it can get. And this is the FINALS. I was wondering if Alain Vigneault was getting close to stealing a page out of Roger's book and raising a white towel on a stick at the bench to indicate surrender. I am NOT one of the many many people buy into the conspiracy theory stuff....it angers me that I hear it so much around these parts. With the way the calls went through the bulk of the game last night the NHL is sure doing a good job to put those theories to bed. Instead, they are fanning the flames. In the end, the Canucks fought through the adversity and came out on top. Now they will head to Boston for Game 6 Monday. And the STANLEY CUP will be in the building.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Alberni Valley Bulldogs would like to announce that 93 D Zach Todd
has committed for the 2011-2012 season.

The Holden Massachusets, native played for the Northwood Prep School last season where he posted 7 goals,19 assists for 26 points in 35 games. The 5’10” 175 pound defenseman will bring an all around game to Port Alberni.

“Zach comes from a great program at Northwood Prep School. Zach is a smooth skating, puck moving defenseman that will help us at both ends of the rink, “ comments Head Coach/Assistant Director of Hockey Operations Paul Esdale. “Zach adds depth to our blueline and will be looked upon to contribute immediately,” adds Esdale.

Located in Lake Placid, New York, Northwood Prep has a long standing tradition of strong hockey alumni, boasting fourteen that have played in the National Hockey League. Also, Northwood has graduated several players that have gone on to become Olympians: Tom Mellor'68, Tony Granato '83, David Tretowicz '87, Jim Campbell '91, Chris Therien '90, Mike Richter '85, Andrea Kilbourne-hill '98, and Craig Conroy '90.

I had the pleasure of interviewing Zach on THE PEAK Morning show on Thursday - a well spoken young man, he sounds like a great addition to the team!

Slackin' on bloggin' , Cup Final down to best of three, Alberni Golf Club Men's Club update, BCHL AGM Report

The Stanley Cup battle is now down to a best of three after a 4-0 Boston win last night. The Canucks can't get out of Beantown fast enough, where they were taken out behind the woodshed to the tune of 12-1.

After a 2-0 series lead, I just couldn't get over the amount of Canucks fans I ran into or I read into on facebook and elsewhere who were hoping for the team to lose in Boston "so they can win the Cup at home"

I reacted the same way every time - ARE YOU INSANE? Never, and I mean NEVER hope to lose. Exhibit A - the last two games. One loss turns to an 8-1 loss which turns into ANOTHER loss.... I would guess that 99.9% of all of those people would now be quite O.K. with the Canucks winning the Cup in Boston in 6. They have much to do if they hope to accomplish that feat.

I "sort of" want to get into the Aaron Rome hit and subsequent suspension....but I don't have that much time. I have said my 2 bits on facebook over the last couple of days, and holy smokes the responses have been quite impassioned, to the tune of about 150 of them over several different thought lines. I'll try to make this quick....

The NHL has said that nothing was wrong with the hit, except that it was late. Great. Except I am having a tough time understanding how late is "late" The ruling from the NHL says to me that admiring your pass just became allowed, and that finishing your check just became outlawed.

Is a hit that occurred LESS than 1 second after a player has released the puck  "late" - or at the very least late enough to warrant a major and a suspension?

Nathan Horton admired his pass, and paid the price. The culture of the game has changed SO MUCH, SO QUICK that Aaron Rome is a now villain for doing what he is supposed to do - step up, defend his zone, and make a big check. Nathan Horton is the VICTIM for admiring his pass and not having his head up?

Are you kiddin' me?!

Hockey players are taught from age 3 and up to keep your head up and not to admire your pass. Horton did neither, and THAT is why he ended up hurt and why this is such a big deal. If he has his head up, if he doesn't admire his pass and instead PROTECTS AND DEFENDS himself, he and Rome collide, both of them go flying, the entire rink is on it's feet and every play-by-play guy is goin' nuts about a huge hit...Instead we are looking at Horton on the ice with his brain on reboot. No one wants to see a player, a PERSON in that state.

I said I would make this quick. I am doing a poor job of it....The long and the short of it is this: NHL can put in any new rule they want to protect the players, but if the players DO NOT PROTECT THEMSELVES, none of it matters. Admiring your pass at the offensive blue line? You deserve to get drilled. Too bad it resulted in the injury and the ugly scene, and too bad for Aaron Rome who did nothing more than step up and finish his check.

Here's the Alberni Golf Club Men's Club update courtesy Gerry Fagan....

This is more like golfing weather, clear skies and warm temperatures. A good turnout for the optional Toomstone event. All the competitors played from the blue tees which made the course a little tougher especially for us short ball hitters. There was a tie for first between Wayne Cheveldave and Colin Hamilton, coming in third place was Dennis Debolt and rounding out the prizes in fourth position was non other than Gerry Fagan     (rah, rah, rah ).

In the ball sweep Wayne Cheveldave had the best of the day, shooting a gross score of  80, taking home 3 balls, followed by Dennis Debolt coming in with 81, winning 2 balls. On the net side of the day it was Cal Davies winning 3 balls for his 72, Jack Sparks and Bob Matlock both coming in with 73 taking home 2 balls each.

Closest to the pins were won by Bill Morin on #2 Fred Fredrickson collected $21 for the Charity closest to the pin on #4, Chazz Lazorko for his second shot on #6.  No one was on #13, it is a very tough hole from the Blue tees, and Bill Barrett on #17.

This Sunday June 12th. is the Port Boat House red, white and blue competition. The way it goes is as follows, each hole you hit from a different tee marker. Just so there won’t be any confusion the score cards will be marked. Every man for himself in this event, just make up your own foursomes and register in the Pro Shop.

You can also register as a single and Bruce or Brian will put you in a group. The shotgun start is at 8AM. Don’t forget gentlemen to enter the ball sweep, money pot and the Charity closest to the pin. Also that guests are always welcome at the Alberni Golf Club.

June 8, 2011
For immediate release:

The British Columbia Hockey League held its Annual General Meeting June 2 to 4 in Richmond and met with governors, coaches and team marketers to wrap up the 2010-11 season and set out plans for 2011-12. The coming season will be the league’s 50th anniversary and as it approaches, several celebratory events will be announced.

An important task completed at the AGM was determining the number of home and away games for in-conference play. The half-interlock schedule will have each team play every other team but visit only four rinks in the opposing conference.

Each club will play three of their conference opponents four times at home and four times on the road. Against the remaining four conference opponents, it will be four at home and three on the road.

“We will have the 2011-12 schedule completed by the first week of July,” said BCHL executive director Dave Sales. “Within conference, this is going to be the most balanced schedule we’ve ever seen.”

Another change is that the schedule will start Sept. 23, two weeks later than last year. As such, it has been mandated that each club’s main training camp will begin no sooner than Aug. 22.

With respect to the board of governors, executive committee chairman Darcy Rota of the Coquitlam Express and Vernon Vipers owner Duncan Wray were named co-recipients of the league’s Executive of the Year award. Rota also took the opportunity to announce he is stepping down as chairman and Wray was nominated to take his place and has accepted.

“Both Darcy and Duncan have been exemplary partners in our league and have elevated the BCHL’s status through their dedication,” said league commissioner John Grisdale. “With Duncan moving into the chairman’s role, I know we will not miss a beat moving forward.”

Also, as Wray was already on the executive committee, Westside Warriors owner Mark Cheyne has joined the group to keep it at five members. Surrey’s Ronnie Paterson will continue as co-chair and Trail’s Tom Gawryletz and Alberni Valley’s Andy Oakes stay on board as well.

“I have a great deal of respect for what Darcy did and I understand his reason for moving on,” said Wray, who served a six-year term as chairman prior to Rota. “There are still some things I’d like to accomplish and hopefully I can lead the charge with the new board.”

Please contact the league office if you have any further questions.
Best regards,
Brent Mutis
Communications director

It was good seeing Wayne Cheveldave playing again. Welcome back Chevy.

The team of Tyler Ibsen, Jerry White, Paul Saulnier and Joe Baker came out on top with a 6 under Par 64. In second place was the group of Jim Proteau, Bill Kriwoken and Masami Hirayama, with only 3 players, they took turns hitting the fourth shot. Closest to the pin were won by Jim Proteau on #2, Brian Douillard took home $20 for the Charity closet to the pin on #4, Jim Petersen on #13, Tom Price on #17, not to shabby for 88 years of age, and for his second shot on #6 it was Tyler Ibsen. Sorry Guys for all us losers the two $50 draws for some reason didn’t happen. They will be drawn in the Red, White and Blue competition which takes place in two weeks.

Next week will be open with the $5 optional event happening called the tombstone. Check with Club Captain Fred Fredrickson to find out what that’s all about. Also don’t forget the ball sweep, money pot and the Charity closest to the pin.

Fifty-Two Players showed up for the first Stableford Tournament of the season held on  May 23rd . Some things never change as Bob Price started off the year the same way he ended last year, coming first with 41 points. This time he had to share the spotlight with Ken Sander who also compiled 41 points. In second place was Keith Randall compiling  40 points, next was the group of  Steve Acland, Frank Hastings, Bill Christian, Ron Barker and Gary Korven all  with 38 points. Coming in with 37 points each were Gene Kimoto, Ron Clark and Jim Lawler. The final cash prize went to Dave Mann who came in with 36 points. Second low gross went to the team of Preban Rasmussen and Dennis Debolt, with third low gross going to Jacque Giovetti and Vic Carlton. On the net side first place went to old Smoothy himself Wolf Suhr and his partner George Defrane, second low net went to Mel Trelvik  and Gary Korven, third low net was won by Jerry White and Ron Clark,   fourth place went to Bill Kriwoken and Cliff O’Laney, fifth low net went to Bob Price and Doug Richmond and the final  net prize was won by Al Wright and Fred  Fredrickson.

Closest to the pin winners were George Defrane on #2, Mel Trelvik won $40 for the Charity closest to the pin on #4, Bret Parhar for his second shot on #6, Joe Baker for #13, Colin Hamilton for #17 and for the long drive on #5 it was Brett Parhar who won a gift certificate compliments of  the Westwind Pub. Dennis Frykas was the winner of the $50 Draw.

In the ball sweep Preban Rasmussen shot a gross 73 claiming 3 balls, Dennis Debolt came in with 74 to win 2 balls and Steve Acland won 1 ball for his 75.  On the net side, Ron Clark had the best score of the day shooting 64 to win 3 balls, Jerry White and Clint Wilson both shot 67 to win 2 balls each and Jacques Giovetti shot 68 to win 1 ball.

We had a couple of big money pot winners on Sunday, Jacques Giovetti won $20 for the only birdie on #2, Terry Rai playing in his first event of the season collected $121 for the only birdie on #13 and Doug Richmond Pocketed $56 for the only birdie on #4.

You can purchase golf balls from the attendant on the driving range for $1 per ball or 12 balls for $10.There will be qualifying prizes awarded each day. On the final day there will be a shootout with all 15 finalists competing for some fabulous prizes. Men from 160 yards and Ladies from 140 yards.

Huge congrats to my good friend Eddie Gregory, winner of this year's Team 1040 Award as Broadcaster of the Year! Sorry I missed this somehow at the end of last week...blame the long weekend!

May 19, 2011
For immediate release:

The British Columbia Hockey League is pleased to announce Coquitlam Express play-by-play broadcaster Eddie Gregory has been named the TEAM 1040 Broadcaster of the Year.

Gregory has been the voice of the Express for the past seven seasons and has been with the club in various capacities from scorekeeper to DJ since the club’s inception in 2001. He also maintains a blog called Coquitlam Expressions (www.expressvoice.blogspot.com).

This past season, the 29-year-old Vancouver native covered a young Express squad that qualified for the playoffs with a mad scramble to the finish but couldn’t get past a strong Surrey Eagles team in the opening round. In April, Gregory was in charge of media relations for Team Canada, a group of BCHL players that went to Russia for an invitational tournament and came away with a silver medal. It was an experience Gregory puts up with the 2005-06 season when he called games for the RBC Cup-winning Express team led by Kyle Turris.

“I’ve been on a couple of hockey trips over the course of my time and hockey has given me some unreal experiences,” said Gregory, who created a blog specifically for the Russia trip (www.thebchlinrussia.blogspot.com). “Going to Russia and seeing the team win second place is right up there with the trip to the RBC Cup. It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and I’d like to thank the BCHL for the chance to do it.”

Though pleased with the personal recognition, Gregory said he couldn’t have done it alone.
“I’d like to thank (broadcast partner) Gord Doerkson as well; we’ve worked together for six year and this is his award too.”

The BCHL believes Gregory’s unwavering dedication to the league and coverage of the Express through various forms of media made him an ideal choice.

“He’s long been a broadcaster in the BCHL and has gone above and beyond in promoting the league and Junior A hockey,” said league executive director Dave Sales. “The award is well-deserved for Eddie.”
Please contact the league office if you have any further questions.

So long Quesnel, welcome back Chilliwack

May 24, 2011

For immediate release:

After going to a vote by the league board of governors, the proposed sale and relocation of the
Quesnel Millionaires Hockey Club has been unanimously accepted subject to formal approval
from BC Hockey.

Chiefs Development Group (CDG), formerly the owners of the Langley Chiefs and consisting
mainly of Moray Keith and Jim Bond has purchased the franchise with the intent of moving it to
Chilliwack. Longtime Chiefs head coach and general manager Harvey Smyl has agreed to an
ownership position within the new group.

"I'm very happy to have the great support of the BCHL board of governors and that they'd vote
unanimously to bring Chilliwack back into our league," said board chairman Darcy Rota. "There
are still some points that need to be cleared up before it's official but we're sure that will happen
very soon."

CDG recently sold the Langley franchise but retain the rights to the "Chiefs" nickname. Nothing
has been made official yet as to a name for the relocating franchise though the last time the BCHL
had a team in Chilliwack, in the 2005-06 season, they were known as the Chiefs.

The Chilliwack team will play in the Interior Conference for the coming season and the league will
be realigned after that.

Due to the late timing of the application, BC Hockey will be holding an exceptional conference call of its executive committee in order to formalize, review and approve the sale and relocation of the club.

Please contact the league office if you have any further questions.

Canucks/Sharks Game Day notes, courtesy Joey Kenward

‪

The Canucks will go looking for their 10th win of the 2011 Stanley Cup Playoffs tonight when they play host to the San Jose Sharks in Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals.‬
‪

In Sunday's series opening 3-2 victory, Henrik Sedin (1g,1a), Kevin Bieksa (1g), and Maxim Lapierre (1g) had the goals for Vancouver while Joe Thorton (1g,1a), and Patrick Marleau (1g) replied for San Jose. It was the first time in this year's playoffs the Canucks won a game when trailing after two periods while it was San Jose's second loss in the post season when holding a lead after 40 minutes.

The Canucks are expected to make one roster move in preparation for tonight's game at Rogers Arena. While the team didn't take part in a full game day skate this morning, the club did hold a full practice yesterday at UBC's Father David Bauer Arena.

Jeff Tambellini took the place of Tanner Glass on the fourth line. If Tambellini draws in, it will be his second career playoff game and his first on home ice for the Canucks.

Manny Malhotra, who is celebrating his 31st birthday today, skated with full gear on for the first time yesterday since his eye surgery. However he did not take part in contact drills and is not expected back in game action any time soon.

Special teams definitely played a role in Game 1 for Vancouver. Even though they allowed the Sharks a power play goal, the Canucks were short-handed only once on the night. It was the second time in three games the Canucks gave their opponents one man advantage.

On the flip side, Vancouver finished the night 1-for-4 on the power play, with Henrik Sedin's game winning goal coming on the man advantage. The Canucks have gone just 2/22 on the power play at home in the playoffs, good enough for 14th out of 16 teams that qualified for the playoffs (9.1%).

Ryan Kesler enters tonight's action riding a six-game point scoring streak (5g,7a). His five goals and 11 assists have him tied for top spot in the NHL playoffs alongside Tampa Bay Lightning forwards Martin St. Louis (7g,9a) and Vincent Lecavalier (6g,10a).

Judging by yesterday's practice, the Sharks are not expected to make many, if any, changes to the line-up that was on the ice in Game 1. Despite making 35 saves in the loss, Sunday marked the ninth time in 14 playoff games this year where goalie Antti Niemi allowed a minimum of three goals against.

Joe Thorton scored just his third goal in 14 games on Sunday night. He was credited with a playoff-high five shots in the game.

Patrick Marleau has goals in back-to-back games for the first time in this year's playoffs. His next goal will be the 50th of his playoff career.

Here is how both teams may line-up against each other tonight at Rogers Arena:

Canucks:

D. Sedin – H. Sedin – Burrows

Higgins – Kesler – Raymond

Torres – Lapierre – Hansen

Tambellini – Hodgson – Oreskovich

Hamhuis – Bieksa

Edler – Salo

Rome – Ehrhoff

Luongo

Schneider

Sharks:

Patrick Marleau – Joe Thorton – Devin Setoguchi

Ryane Clowe – Logan Couture – Dany Heatley

Torrey Mitchell – Joe Pavelski – Kyle Wellwood

Ben Eager – Scott Nichol – Jamal Mayers

Doug Murray – Dan Boyle

Niclas Wallin – Ian White

Marc-Edouard Vlasic – Kent Huskins/Jason Demers

Antti Niemi

Antero Nittymaki

Sharks @ Nucks, Game 2 tonight on THE PEAK, Gold in the Net Golf Classic, Alberni Golf Club Update....

The Canucks take a 1-0 lead into Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals tonight at Rogers Arena. Catch the pregame show tonight on THE PEAK at 5:30 with the puck drop and play-by-play to follow just after 6:00pm.

From the Canucks website, click to read the PREVIEW and the LINE UP

Special thanks to Perry, Deb and anyone and everyone else that took part in the Gold in the Net Golf Classic on Saturday to benefit the Aaron C. Cornwell Memorial Scholarship fund. Always a great time! Hopefully we will see you there next year! Someone commented about the price of the tournament - I certainly respect some things are too expensive for some people - keep in mind that if you went golfing at Morningstar 18 holes of Golf plus a cart would run you about $95.00. So $85.00 to golf in the tournament is actually a DEAL. Paying that much for golf isn't my style too often - but you really do get what you pay for at Morningstar - it's a great challenge and a very nice course that I enjoy playing on once or twice a year. The Alberni Golf Club is more my style in the end though!

Speaking of the Alberni Golf Club - here's the latest update from Gerry Fagan

What is going on with the weather? For the second time this season the Sunday Men’s Club was a washout. Not to worry the Alberni Chrysler/ Toyota two man best ball will be held this coming Sunday May 22nd. It’s the long weekend but the weather promises to be much improved.
The format is two man teams with the best net and best gross counting on each hole. The shotgun is set to go off at 8 AM. Please try to be there no later than 7:45. Register with your partner in the Pro Shop or as a single and Bruce will find you a partner. You can also sign up by phoning, 250-723-5422 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting            250-723-5422      end_of_the_skype_highlighting.

Congratulations go out to Junior member, Greg Palmer playing at Arbutus Ridge May 13th & 14th. On the Friday he came in with an outstanding 73, followed on Saturday by a 68. The field consisted of 72 players from across Canada, including National Junior Team Members. Greg’s 4th. place finish earned  him a spot on the Canadian Junior Boys Team. Way to go Greg. Jeffrey Dagg also playing in the event shot 80 & 73 to  place 33rd. in the field.

Due to soggy conditions the Stableford was cancelled on Monday, but will be held next Monday May 23. There will be a shotgun start at 8:30, although the early birds who wish to enter the competition may tee off earlier. If you compile 36 points which is right around your handicap you will automatically win $35 in club money.  The more points you rack up the more you can win. For those who may be off their game be sure to turn you score cards in as there will be several draws each day.

There will also be closest to the pin prizes of sleeves of balls, #2 will be for men with Handicap of 15 or higher, #4 will be for all the women, #13 for men with handicaps lower than 15 and #17 will be for all competitors. The cost remains the same as other years at $20.

The new score cards are working out well, thanks to Houle Printing for donating them.
