Alberni Wrestling Update, ADSS Leadship/Bulldogs Food Drive, Tom's East Coast Road Trip Diary #7

Members from the Senior ADSS Wrestling team comprised the majority of an Island select team that competed at the Roberts Rumble on the weekend.  For most of the Armada Senior wrestling team this was their first action of the season. The tournament took place at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver. Teams were made up from regional clubs and many of the top wrestlers from around the province were present. 

The Island boy’s team placed 2^nd overall in this dual meet tournament. In this type of tournament format teams compete head to head at each weight class. Points are awarded to teams based on how a wrestler wins or loses.  The format makes for exciting and spectator friendly battles between teams.

In route to the finals the boy’s team had a 28 – 13 victory over Tri-Cities, a 25-17 victory over North Shore, and a 27 – 21 victory over the Burnaby Selects.  Unfortunately the Island boys could not sustain the momentum into their fourth and final dual meet match where they lost a hard fought battle against the the Khlasa Wrestling Club 21 – 27.  Three ADSS boys went undefeated to claim their individual weight class titles and lead the Island Team to its second place finish.  Grade 12 wrestler Austin Evans threw everyone of his opponents and went 4-0 in the 58 kilogram division.   Grade 11 Cullen Hines was simply dominating going 4-0 and pinning all of his opponents in the 76 kilogram division.  Although only in Grade 9 Jesse Wagner turned some heads going 4-0 in the 46 kilogram division.  Wagner and his twin brother Jordan are going to be valuable additions to the ADSS this year.  Also winning matches for the Island team was Jordan Wagner (2-2 at 50 kilograms), Austin Jaworski (1-3 at 69 kilograms).  While reflecting on the performance of the team Coach James Messenger had this to say “I am really happy with how we wrestled today.  This tournament is a great indicator of how we compare to the other top wrestlers and teams around the province at this point early in the season.  It helps us gauge where are at and where we need to focus our development. It is still very early but based on how we performed I think it is safe to say the Armada boys are going to once again threaten to place in the top 3 at the Provincial High School tournament.”

A handful of Armada girls also made the ferry trip over to get some much needed matches against Lower Mainland opponents.  Unfortunately the girls division was not as deep as the boys and their only opposition came from a North Shore select team. Jordie Bodnar (43 kilograms), Rhea Wing (43 kilograms), and Brianne Charles (65 kilograms) all recorded wins for their team.  “It was unfortunate that our girls didn’t get more matches, however every match counts. The more matches we get the better prepared we are going to be in February at the Provincial Championships. Our girls team is not big in numbers but we really hope to make a run for the title come February,” commented Coach Russ Bodnar.

The next action for the Armada Wrestling Team will next week when the team will travel to Chemanius for the Cougar Invitational.  December 16 & 17 the Armada will attend the “War on the Floor” tournament at Simon Fraser University. There will be novice and elite divisions at the tournament and it is expected that the team will be bringing as many wrestlers as they can to get some competition prior to Christmas.

 Moving on - an update from the ADSS Leadership Class regarding their Food Drive with the Bulldogs:

The Food Drive is on now until Dec.16th. We are collecting non-perishable food items the can be dropped off in front of the main office at ADSS. Our goal this year is to reach 5600 items for Totem 56'. If we reach our goal our reward is early dismissal on the last day of school before the break, which would be 12:30. We will be collecting food items our front at the beginning of the Bulldogs home game on Wednesday the 8th. We need the communities help to reach our goal. Half the food will go to the Bread of Life and the other half to the Salvation Army. Some items in need this year are proteins, such as peanut butter, canned meat, tuna, etc.

Dogs host Express on "Teddy Bear Toss" Night, Tom's East Coast Road Trip Diary....#4

The Dogs are back at it tonight on Teddy Bear Toss night at the Pound as the Coquitlam Express visit for the first time this season.

Something has to give tonight - the Dogs have lost three in a row, the Express have lost seven. They are actually winless in eight going back to the 3-3 tie these teams played to on November 14th in Coquitlam, so you never know.

Hopefully someone on the officiating crew is looking at the clock tonight ;)

Heck, while I'm at it, lets just hope the Dogs don't get - or in the eyes of the officials - "earn" the short end of the penalties tonight.I'm getting tired of this team repeatedly ending up on the wrong end of the penalty stick for more often than not "playing hard" They don't play undisciplined and they don't play lazy with their sticks - as a rule.

The fact that they struggle to score goals shouldn't mean that they by default deserve more penalties, should it?

Judging by some of the calls over the last little while, I'm starting to wonder.

Everything is magnified when you struggle to score I guess, including poor officiating.

#1 Pictures arriving in Toronto, waiting to head to Providence, and some words from Tom.


Harry will be meeting me at the airport in Providence.


Unfortunately, he is suspended for tonight's game vs Union due to a knee on knee check in Brown's last game vs #1 ranked Boston University. The positive is that he and I get the whole game to visit and catch up. I spoke to Matt Hatch a few days ago and we will get a short visit after the game. Matt has been playing well lately.


Tomorrow Harry and I will have breakfast together at Brown and I will pick up Evan Michalchukfrom the train as he is coming in from New York. After lunch I meet the coaches and tour the Campus at Brown before their game vs RPI at 4 pm. I will get to see Nolan and Johnny Rogic who are at RPI. Jordan Kremyr may join us from Providence College after the game for a nice reunion.


We are expecting many NHL scouts at Saturday's and Tuesday's games at Brown. Harry is one of the top NCAA free agents that teams are looking at this year.

Chiefs 3 Dogs 1

The Dogs dropped their 3rd straight tonight, 3-1 at the Dog Pound to the Langley Chiefs.The above picture describes the feel for the evening, the Dogs on the PK, as they kill at 5 on 3.


A good game to watch with over five minutes of hockey before a whistle to open the game.


A great effort for the Dogs, which unfortunately fell short due to a lack of offence. Casey Bailey twice hit the bar behind Cole Huggins, once when it was 0-0, and once when it was 2-1 Chiefs with a minute to go with the extra attacker out with the goalie pulled. Ouch.

Sam Mitchell had the only goal for the Dogs, batting a rebound in out of mid air at the side of the net late in teh secodn on the power play.

Credit to the Chiefs on a well played game - not to take anything away from them they are a solid team, and a fun one to watch - but a tough loss for the Dogs as they once again had ample opportunities around the net to tie the game.


You can look at a 3rd straight loss two ways - the team is struggling, they can't score, they aren't playing well, etc etc.


Its just my opinion but I look at it the other way - if they can bring the same work ethic, emotion, intensity, desire, passion, etc etc etc that they brought tonight EVERY night, they will win their fair share of games.


Langley out shot the Dogs 33-32.
The Dogs went 1 for 4 on the powerplay while the Chiefs went 0 for 7, including a lengthy two man advantage.

The Dogs look to break a two game losing streak tonight when they host the Coastal Conference's 2nd placed team in the Langley Chiefs at the Dog Pound.

Clippers 4 Dogs 3

A tough loss for the Dogs tonight as they couldn't buy a break or a call as they played a strong game but ended up on the wrong end of a 4-3 score, twice coming back from two goal deficits to make it interesting.

The Clippers took a 1-0 lead on the powerplay in the first period before the Dogs tied it up on some even up calls to Nanaimo early in the second after they had the first three powerplay chances of the game. Two minors on the same stoppage resulted in a full two minute 5 on 3 that the Dogs would make good on when Tyler Berkholtz would find a rebound off a Ryan Renz shot off the back post.

The Clippers went up 2-1 as a deflected point shot was stopped by Slubowski on a great reactionary save but he couldn't find the rebound. It was 3-1 Nanaimo on another powerplay goal late in the second before the Dogs clawed back within one just 30 seconds into the third when Tyler Berkholtz scored his second of the game on a rebound after Casey Bailey took the puck hard to the net. The Clippers took a 4-2 lead with eight minutes to play in regulation on their third powerplay goal of the game but the Dogs didn't quit, making it 4-3 with two and a half minutes to play on a Kenney Morrison one-timer from the right point that found its way home.

The Dogs would have several great chances to tie it on several scrambles around the Nanaimo net in the dying minutes but they couldn't get the equalizer to go as the Clippers held on.

Final shots favoured the Dogs 36-25.

The Dogs went 2 for 3 on the powerplay while the Clippers went 3 for 7.

The Dogs had great opportunities throughout the game that they will no doubt be thinking of now as they had no less than five 2 on 1 rushes that they couldn't connect on. They need their penalty kill to be better, and tonight they certainly deserved a break around their net or the oppositions net but it didn't seem like they got any.

The officiating was worse than usual from the Referee in question, which is certainly saying something. Yes, its a developmental league, but some nights the lack of development in these guys makes you mental. 

The Dogs don't have any time to hang their heads as they are right back at it tomorrow as the Langley Chiefs visit the Dog Pound for a Thursday night tilt.

The Hockey Canada carding deadline is 6pm tonight for the teams to get down to 23 cards. Do I anticipate any Bulldog transactions? If the right deal is out there - YES. If it isn't - NO. I know that Head Coach and GM Paul Esdale is like everyone else out there today in that he's looking to improve his team. I know it's just common sense but I'm not sure what other answer I can give other than "if the right deal is out there it will be made"

I can tell you for certain we'll know what the Dogs did or didn't do come puck drop tonight.

The Bulldogs host their annual Teddy Bear Toss on Saturday when they host Coquitlam - read more here so buy some bears, bring some bears, whatever, just make sure you have some plush to throw when the Dogs score for the less fortunate folks of the community who need a lift of their spirits over the Holidays.

Alberni Wrestlers Compete at Island Novice in Campbell River
  

Wrestling teams from Alberni District Secondary School and Dunn and Neill Middle Schools travelled to Campbell River on Saturday to compete at the Island Novice Wrestling Championships. The tournament marks the official start of the school wrestling season although many locals attended an exhibition meet in Nanaimo last weekend. Not surprisingly the Alberni Valley was well represented by its school wrestling teams. Although the weather did deter a few athletes from making the trip the relatively small Alberni teams faired well despite their numbers.

EJ Dunn Middle School was the top team in the Senior Girls despite competing against high schools from across Vancouver Island. The Dunn girls were led by Remi Wells who went undefeated to win the Gold Medal in the 50 kg division.  Michel Kurucz won a silver medal in the 57 kg Girls division.  Michel was dominant in her preliminary matches but came up against a tough high school wrestler from Campbell River in the final.  

“The Island Novice is intended for beginner wrestlers.  Since Remi and Michel have a couple years experience we decided to bump them up to the Senior Division to challenge them a little.  We certainly didn’t expect to come home with the title but that was an added bonus,” explained EJ Dunn coach Russ Bodnar.  Also competing in the Senior Girls division were two rookie wrestlers from ADSS.  As a pair the ADSS Girls Team managed to finished a respectable 5th place.  Elaina Todd (50 kg) was second and Isabella Larson (57 kg) was fourth.

In the Junior Girls division Neill Middle School finished third behind host Phoenix Middle School and Dover Bay from Nanaimo. The Neill girls were led by the gold medal performance of Corrine Gough (40 kg).  Also placing for Neill was Bella Jones (4th at 40 kg).  The EJ Dunn Junior Girls finished fifth as a team based on the silver medal performance of up and comer Micaela Dick (54 kg).

On the boys side the EJ Dunn boys finished third in the Junior Boys Division behind Phoenix Middle School and the Victoria Bulldogs Club.  The Dunn boys were led by the outstanding performance of rookie wrestler Jamie Durning who won the gold medal at 35 kg.  Kenny Wale (2nd at 45 kg) and Tyler Drew-Adams (3rd at 78+ kg) also added to EJ Dunn’s medal count.  Trevor Barker (4th at 33kg), Tyler Maxwell (4th at 45 kg), TJ Manson (5th at 45 kg) and Oliver Witham (5th at 45 kg) all contributed valuable team points.

Neill Middle School was also well represented in the Junior Boys Division.  Local Chris Kurucz brought home the Gold Medal in the heavy weight division, Ben Salitter brought home the bronze at 66 kg, and Cody Stewart was fifth at 70 kg.  ADSS had two Grade 9s new to the sport who were also eligible to compete in the Junior Boys Division.  Tristan Schulze (1st at 78+kg) and Johnny Loudon (3rd at 57 kg) showed they will be valuable additions to the ADSS team this year.

Due to the fact the tournament is classified as a novice tournament only a small number of ADSS wrestlers were eligible to compete in the Senior Boys Division.  All three of those wrestlers who competed brought home medals.  Sheldon Haddad went undefeated to claim the gold medal at 59 kg, Wes Boris claimed the silver at 74 kg, and Cole Walton finished with the bronze at 86kg.   Grade 8 EJ Dunn wrestler Nolan Badovinac was bumped up to the Senior Boys division and brought home a silver medal at 72 kg.

Wrestlers from all three teams will be right back on the mats training this week in preparation for upcoming tournaments. On Saturday a select group of elite wrestlers will be travelling to SFU to compete in the Roberts Rumble. Wrestlers at all levels will be travelling to the Chemanius for the Cougar Invitational December 11th and SFU for the War On the Floor December 15, 16, & 17.

Bulldogs Win 3-0 against the Victoria Racket Club on Saturday

 The Bantam A team took the weekend November 20^th 21^st off,  only to come back and defeat the Victoria Racket Club 3-0 on Saturday 27^th .

The star of this game was without question Matt Oliver who scored 2 of the 3 goals with an assist on the 3^rd , speed and calm dictated his day as Matt relentlessly brought the game to the Racket Club.  Goal one was a classic play as Matt broke away and undressed Allan Jeremy (Racket Club Goalie) with a patient deke that had Allan going in the wrong direction.  Look for more great things from # 8 Matt Oliver.

Bulldogs vs Malmo Redhawks tickets on sale today, Athletic Hall Opens today, Dogs host Kings tonight

Yesterday was the deadline for Season Ticket and Corporate Ticket holders to claim their seats for the January 2nd game when the Dogs host the Sweden-based Malmo Redhawks. That means TODAY tickets are on sale to the general public by visiting the Dogs office or heading to the website to purchase online.

The Alberni Athletic Hall officially opens today with the Ceremonies getting underway at 1pm. A special Exhibition contest against former Armada Alumni and First Nations stars gets underway at 3:30.

The Bulldogs host the BCHL's top team, and the Nation's #2 ranked team in the Powell River Kings tonight at the Dog Pound. Catch the pregame show with Rick and I getting underway at 6:45 with the play-by-play to follow at 7:00.

The Kings picked up a 2-1 win last night in Nanaimo, avenging a 6-3 loss at home to the Clippers on Wednesday night. The Kings are 2-1-2-0 in their last five games which is a little odd with ties being a rarity in the BCHL.
