First things first - apologies for the lull in posts. It's been a busy summer and especially busy lately with some days off out of town for my brother in law's wedding!

Bruce came in for the Alberni Golf Club Men's Club Update today and I said "I need to do a much overdue blog update" "YAH NO KIDDING" was reply! Sorry I've been busy...and it's summer! Just too many things going on that see me never sit down at thee ole' computer!

50 golfers played in the Dairy Queen two man Iron Man on Sunday July 22.  Craig Acland and Keith Gauthier posted first low gross.  Sam Parhar and Brett Parhar were second followed by Preban Rasmussen and Dennis Debolt.  First low net were Kevin Carlton and Mark Anderson followed by Jim Lawler and Frank Hastings, Jacques Giovetti and John Jones, George DeFrane and Paul Saulnier, Jim Rhodes and Ron Barker.

On #2 Craig Acland was closest to the pin.  Art Fowler collected $33 for his closest to the pin shot on #4.  Sam Parhar scored closest to the pin on #13 and Ken Fong was closest on #17.  On #6 Keith Gauthier put his second shot closest to the pin.  The Westwind Pub put up a gift certificate for the long drive on #5 and Ken Fong walked off with that prize.

No winner on the hidden hole this week so $296 will be up for grabs next Sunday.

On Thursday Gene Kimoto aced #13.  Way to go Gene!

Next Sunday is the Van Isle Ford Scramble.  The computer will pick 4 man teams for a shotgun start at 8AM sharp.  Please enter with your handicap in the Pro Shop.  There will be pari-mutual betting available.

The Junior Prep Camp continues at the Multplex - Thanks to Doug Lindores for sending this note along...

Today for all of the groups - Bantams, Midgets and Major Midget Junior divisions it is fitness day plus practice and game day.

There are this week 130 plus boys in camp

They all will be doing a fit test under the guidance of Pro 4 sports and Jeff Compton

The groups also have a one and a half hour practise schedule    and today each team has a game.

Also the goaltenders get special traing with the goaltender group led by Brady Johnson and his team of six other coaches.   Harrisson May former goaltender with the Dogs is working with goalies.  Harrison is attending the University of Ottawa.

Goaltenders have two sessions this evening at 7pm and 9pm

The Junior major midget group plays at 4:30 today on one sheet and the midget groups play at 2:30 and 4:30. The Bantams are sometime around 3pm. 

Lots happening for the kids, the usual day is two dry lands and two ice schedules of one and a half hours each

The above schedule is true for Friday with Thursday seeing all groups having two ice sessions and two drylands   video and lectures by various Junior coaches

Mike Johnson of the Portland Winter Hawks is leading this week   Feature  coaches from the BCHL   are Mike Olson - Nanaimo, Jim Babcock - Surrey, Dave Johnston Jim Ingram - Cowichan Valley, Geoff Grimwood Powell River and now also Victoria Royals, Rick Schievink - Alberni, Troy Mick - Salmon Arm, Kevin Hasselberg - North Battleford Stars

FINALLY - A couple quick Rugby hits here...thanks to Randy for sending the info along!

Kate Schievink of the ADSS Ladies High School Provincial Champions just came back from the BC summer games and won bronze with the U-17 girls island team. She had a great time and experience and learned a lot about 7s. This was Kate’s first experience at the 7s game and she looks forward to helping Ryan Hall get a girls 7s team started at the high school next year. Over the tourney she gained more playing time and in the bronze medal game earned a starting position and played the entire match. Congratulations!

 AND

 Congratulations to Luke Bradley who on the heels of a trip to England with Canada U17 used a trip to the Provincial Region Competition with the Island Tsuanmi U17 to get noticed by the selection committee of Team BC.  He completed a training camp this past week and was selected to attend the National Tournament.  The competition was stiff and he was able to endure.

 Catch one of the newest additions to the Bulldogs on the 93.3 The Peak FM Morning Show today as 1992 born goalie Jay Deo will join me just after 8:10am!

If you missed it on the CTV News last night, Mira Laurence gave me the gears a little bit during the sports....although it was very nice to hear such great comments about the Alberni Valley and the Cherry Creek Golf Club. I was VERY NICE to Mira on the Morning Show yesterday and here on the blog...the gloves are off now, so be sure to tune in today! 

Lets just say I need a 45 gallon drum of Robaxacet, because my BACK is still sore from CARRYING THE TEAM on Saturday!

Sounds like a media challenge between Mira and I, benefiting charity maybe?

HUGE CONGRATS to the Bantam Blazers U16 Fastpitch team, PROVINCIAL CHAMPS! Here's the note that was sent in to THE PEAK today....way to go girls!

The Alberni valley Blazers played nine games over the weekend. They went 8-1 including winning in the medal round 7-4 against the Abbotsford 96ers. 

Every girl contributed to the wins, they were all mvp's in their coaches minds. 

Coaches Shannon Charlesworth, Liz Shoot, Tony shoot and Richard steed would like to thank all the sponsors, parents and the Alberni Valley Softball Association for their dedication to this weekends event

What a great time for everyone involved, what a great day for the charities that benefit from everyone's generosity - over HALF A MILLION dollars raised by this tournament now, which is just plain incredible...and yes, it was quite the night for me as I was lucky enough to WIN A BRAND NEW SET OF GOLF CLUBS!

The "Dream Team" as we dubbed it - Richard Skinner, yours truly, Matt Fogarty and Stu Crouse from Island Radio, plus Mira Laurence from CTV Vancouver Island, PLUS the Michelob girls.

We played poorly for the most part, but we each had a shot or two that made the rest of the team cheer, which is what it's all about in a fun tournament like this. Mira made several long putts...I didn't drive for show as much as she putted for dough, but who cares, we had a blast!

The REAL magic happened on the 13th hole, the "Beat the Car Dealer" Van Isle Ford hole.

That's owner Will Pullford in the picture above...don't let the good form and direction of the ball fool you as that baby is about to fade to the right rough...I would like to say SLICE but that wouldn't be fair to Will!

Here's how it worked on this hole - everyone that played in the tournament got one entry on a new set of Cobra Ricky Fowler Golf Clubs. Anyone who elected to try and "Beat the Car Dealer" (as opposed to "Beat the Pros" on the other Par 3's with Bruce and Brian) would make a donation to the Charity Classic that would give them a SECOND entry into the draw for the clubs, PLUS, if your shot was better than Will's was he would DOUBLE your donation to the charity.

Needless to say I'm pretty happy I elected to beat Will, as at the end of the night I was the STUNNED WINNER of the new clubs! Here's what my little guy Griffin thinks of them....

Goodbye Berkie, Hello Deo, Demerais to Oceanside...

A series of recent moves by the Bulldogs has seen Tyler Berkholtz head to the Trail Smoke Eaters and 92 born goalie Jay Deo join the Dog Pound crew. For more details, read up on the Bulldogs website HERE

I say it all the time when it comes to trades...it's always very tough to see these kids go. Especially when it's a kid like Tyler that you have known for three years. You work hand in hand with them almost day in and day out over the course of a year, you spend long hours on the bus, on the ferry, at the hotel, at the radio station, the list goes on!

Good luck "Berkie" I will miss ya bud...and if any of the Trail Smoke Eater players are reading this - ask Berkie about the time I dusted him in NHL12! HA!

Alberni Wrestling hosts FREE Kids Wrestling Camp, CONGRATS DAN MARSHALL!

This one is for the parents! If you are having a tough time adjusting to having the kids out of school...send them to the FREE Alberni Wrestling Kids Camp from July 3 to 5th!

Here's the details:

The Alberni Wrestling Club is again hosting its annual Kids Wrestling Camp.  If you are interested in attending bring this form to Neill Middle School for any of the sessions July 3 -5 at 10:00 am or mail to: c/o Kid Wrestling 10288 Bishop Dr. Port Alberni, BC V9Y 9A6.

HUGE CONGRATS to Nanaimo Clipper Voice Dan Marshall from our sister station 106.9 The Wolf in Nanaimo, who was named the BCHL's Broadcaster of the Year yesterday for the first time. 

WAAAAAAAYYYYYY overdue. The fact he hadn't won the award yet was a travesty only overshadowed by Paul Henderson's absence from the Hockey Hall of Fame!

You won't find a better pro and a better guy. Clipper fans and BCHL fans are lucky to have a guy like Dan bringing the game to them. Way to go Danno!

The Port Alberni Junior Hockey Society announced today that it has reached an Agreement in
Principle and signed a Term Sheet with the current ownership group of the Alberni Valley
Bulldogs for acquisition of the team. The parties involved are now working on a definitive
agreement and are preparing to refer the sale to the BCHL for review.


If the sale structure, business plan and operating budget developed by PAJHS is approved by
the league’s Board of Governors, the Society will own 100% of the team and will hold no
current liabilities. Vendor financing is involved on a long term basis with a very competitive
rate of interest. The Society has asked current Directors Andy Oakes and Dennis See to stay on
as advisors for the near term to ensure a smooth transition of ownership and most importantly,
continuity for players, staff and volunteers.


While PAJHS Chair Darren DeLuca is encouraged by the tremendous public support the society
has received to date, he stressed that the foundation of the team going forward will be ongoing
reinforcement of that support in the form of ticket sales and sponsor commitment. “To allow
the team to begin the year with the resources it needs to kick off a successful season, the
Society would encourage supporters to complete season ticket purchases and finalize annual
sponsorship agreements as soon as possible” said DeLuca. “Bulldogs personnel are hard at work
establishing winning elements for the season ahead and we would like to remind everyone that
its ‘business as usual’ for the team”.

Rob Shick on THE PEAK, 8:10am today, Brad Rebagliati Interview, Bulldogs Golf Tourney,

Port Alberni Native Rob Schick will be on the 93.3 The Peak FM Morning Show today along with Bruce MacDonald and Janet Buchanan from Meals on Wheels.

The topic? The Alberni Valley Charity Golf Classic of course - started by Rob way back when pucks were square!

To get a better idea about what the tournament and his home town means to Rob, check out this video from the 2009 Classic. It was taken with my phone so the visuals aren't the best, but the audio certainly "captures the spirit of the thing" to quote the great Dickie Dunn from Slap Shot!

Funk and Rebagliati Commit to Bulldogs

PRESS RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Port Alberni, BC – The Alberni Valley Bulldogs announce today that they have signed two more top prospects for the 2012/13 season: Zach Funk and Brad Rebagliati.

Zach Funk is a 1996-born forward that has come up through the Nanaimo Minor Hockey Association system. At the start of this season, Funk was one of the top forwards at the North Island Silvertips major midget tryouts before deciding to play at Shattuck-St. Mary’s in Faribault, Minnesota. As a 15-year old rookie, he put up 21 points in 54 games. Funk attended the Bulldogs’ spring identification camp held in Port Alberni,BC. At that camp, he definitely impressed the evaluating committee.

"Playing in the BCHL has been a dream of mine since I was a little kid,” said Funk. “I am honored to be a Bulldog and can't wait to contribute to the success of the team."

Funk was also identified as one of the top 1996-born players in BC and was invited to participate in the BC Hockey U17 BC Cup this past May in Salmon Arm, BC. Funk tied all players for most points (9) and goals (5) in the 4-day competition en route to helping his team win the gold medal with a 1-0 win in the championship game.

Brad Rebagliati is a 1995-born goalie who grew up in Cranbrook, BC. This past season Rebagliati played for the OHA Prep team, appearing in 32 games and posting a 2.66 GAA. He was discovered in the Bulldogs’ spring identification camp held in Quesnel, BC, in late April.

“I am very pleased to have the opportunity to be a Bulldog,” commented Rebagliati. “I am looking forward to the year and I am excited to live in Port Alberni.”

Rebagliati has one of a small handful of goalies that received an invite to the 2010 U17 BC Hockey provincial camp. He didn’t allow a single goal in the three games that he appeared in. Rebagliati’s outstanding performance against the best players in the province earned him a spot on the short-list for Team Pacific, only to be beat out by Tristan Jarry who as a 16-year-old goalie this past season for the Edmonton Oil Kings in the WHL.

“Both players are great young talents,” said Alberni Valley Bulldogs head coach Kevin Willison. “We hope they will be a big part of our puzzle in the coming years and will be very exciting for our fans to watch,” added Willison.

The Alberni Valley Bulldogs organization is very excited to welcome Zach and Brad to

the organization.

Additional commitments will be announced in the near future.

A very cool example of what the team means from Max Fenkell....

Dear Port Alberni,

My name is Max Fenkell and for the past year you knew me primarily as one of the  goalies for the Alberni Valley Bulldogs, or the only person in Port Alberni with a Pennsylvania license plate on my car.  Since I left Port Alberni I have stayed in contact with many people who I consider to be my friends, and some who I consider to be family.  My point in writing this letter is to give you a different perspective on why the Bulldogs are important. As the PAJHS works to secure the team’s future in Port Alberni  I wanted to give you a player’s point of view and express to you what the community does for the team, not what we do for the community. 

Let me start by saying that I grew up in a town that is pretty much the opposite of Port Alberni to a “T”.  My town is a suburb of the city of Philadelphia, has zero community spirit, and in the house that I live in, I believe that I know approximately five of the people who live in my neighborhood.  People do not really care about you when they ask you “how is your day going?”, nor would they ever pack almost 10% of the people who live in the town into a building once or twice a week in order to watch kids play a sport. 

When I got to Port Alberni in August, I really did not know anyone, had no idea where anything was, and had a “I don’t think, I’m in Kansas anymore” moment as I came over the hump for the first time and drove through the streets of the town to my billets, Rick and Melinda Geddes, house.  I was greeted at the door by the two most energetic dogs (if you know Harley or Xena you would understand) I had ever seen, and by the most welcoming family I had ever seen (again, if you know the Geddes you would understand).  They made my transition to a new, city, country and home seamless.  I guarantee my teammates felt the same way the first time they walked into their billet homes as well. 

As the year went on, and I started to meet people in the town, I realized why Port Alberni is such a special place.  Whether I walked into the grocery store, or went to a community event all of the people knew more about me than my position on the ice.  They cared about how I liked the town, how my mom and dad back home (who most of them had never met) were doing, about my interests and most importantly what I thought of our game the night before or coming up.  Before long I even felt like I knew every one in the town by their name, not just by their face.  I truly felt a part of this town, and still do to this day. 

My life changed in Port Alberni and not just as a hockey player.  I was only in town a short nine months, but I know for a fact that my experience would have been far different in any other town.  No town could care as much about 25 young players who come to the town every year.  No town could make each and every player, coach, and staff member of the team feel like they won each and every night no matter the score of the game. 

Now, that is just a brief summary of my story.  I could have written ten times this amount about what this year did for me; but I know that every hockey player who has played in Port Alberni for the past ten years and every player who will play in Port Alberni in the future will have a similar story. 

That is why it is so important to have the team in the town.  That is why it is so important to continue the support that the town has given the team in the past ten years.  I understand it is very important to the town financially, and socially to have a team.  However, I also know that for the billets, volunteers and season ticket holders the team is far more important than entertainment or a business.  It is something that each and every member of Port Alberni is a part of and it would be a shame for the people of the town to lose that.

Here's the Alberni Golf Club Men's Club update from Gerry. Thanks Gerry!

Sunday the Toomstone event was held.  What is a toomstone event you may well ask.  Good old Porchy is here to answer that very question.  Each player is given a stake with their name on it. Each player is  allowed 75% of his handicap.  Say for example your handicap is 20 then your allowance for toomstone would be 15.  When the total for your round reaches 85 you plant the stake at wherever your 85th shot lies.  The player reaching the furthest wins.  On Sunday Jacques Giovetti led the way.  Mike Pechor, Paul Saulnier, Cal Davies and Jack Sparks followed in that order.

Closest to the pin was Colin Hamilton on #2.  Glen Trask pocketed $28 for the charity closest to the pin on #4.  Mickey Keeley  was closest to the pin on ##13 and Jerry White on #17.   Colin Hamilton was closest to the pin with his 2nd shot on #6  No one birdied the hidden hole which was #5 so next week the carry over will be $52.

This coming Sunday the red white and blue competition will be held sponsored by Port Boat House.  In this event you hit each tee shot from a different tee marker.  Fred will have each score card marked so there won't be any confusion. This event is every man for himself.  Make up your own foursomes and register at the Pro Shop.  The usual money pot, charity closest to the pin and hidden hole are all up for grabs.  You can also register as a single and Fred will put you in a group.  The shotgun start is scheduled for 8 AM.

Last but not least - if you need breakkie on Thursday Morning (or even if you don't) then please get to ADSS to support their annual Pancake Sale outside the school from 7am to 9am. Breakfast is by donations, with proceeds going towards the Relay for Life!
