Major Moves - Brandon Adams back, Harris released, Dogs acquire Larose, Delbianco, rights to Walker, move Keca, Hicks, House

Major moves on multiple fronts today. Frankly, I'm shocked. While I assumed something would happen with the teams recent struggles, I didn't see anything of this magnitude. Here's the releases that came down from the Dogs today

Harry Zolnierczyk scores a beauty in NHL debut for Philly, Harry on THE PEAK tomorrow morning

...Just plain WOW. As far as I know, first former Dog to score an NHL goal. Might be the first former Dog to play an NHL regular season game, I'm trying to think about that as we speak...
Great story for Harry, the Dogs, the BCHL, and anyone that helped him on his road to the NHL.

Talked to Harry via text tonight. His response to my "are you kidding me!!??" was "what just happened??"

I responded "I think you just buried a beauty in the show"

Very cool!

Barr brilliant, Rivermen rout Dogs....

What an odd game at the Langley Event Centre. The Dogs outshoot the Rivermen 42-24, yet lose 7-1. In the end the Dogs played well, but they couldn't beat James Barr who was fantastic in the Langley net. Credit to the line of Strang-Powell-House for refusing to be denied in the third period, scoring a greasy goal to get on the board. They came back out after the Radio Timeout and almost scored on their next shift - that would have made a game out of it...unfortunately they couldn't get another ugly one and the Rivermen scored a minute later and it was game over.

Off to enjoy a day of rest now. Hope you get one too.

Eagles 5 Dogs 3

A well played game for the Dogs, close, but in the end no cigar as they had three separate leads in the game but they were unable to build on them. Penalties, and special teams, were their undoing in this one as the Eagles went 3 for 6 on the powerplay and the Dogs went 0 for 6.

They were ready to play in this one, going up 1-0 on a beauty by Justin Morello just 17 seconds in. The score stayed that way until Steve Koshey tied it late in the first on the powerplay.

It was 2-1 Dogs in the second on Ryan Lough's second of the year as he re-directed a perfect pass by Tyler Berkholtz at the side of the net. The Eagles again tied it, again on a Steve Koshey point shot on the powerplay. Just over a minute later it was 3-2 Dogs as Mike Puddifant scored on a point shot.

The Eagles tied it on their third powerplay goal of the game in the third as Tyler Morley jammed home a rebound on a goal mouth scramble. They would take a 4-3 lead on the rush immediately after killing a penalty on a Brandon Morley shot from the slot. A gusty move by the Coaching Staff appeared to pay off as they elected to pull Max Fenkell for the extra attacker on a face off in the Langley end with 1:55 to go in the third. The Dogs got possession and several chances before the Eagles were sent to the penalty box to make it a 6 on 4 with just over a minute to play. The powerplay wouldn't last long though, as immediately off the ensuing draw the Dogs were sent to the box to negate the powerplay. The Eagles iced it into an empty net with 18 seconds to play when Tyler Morley stole the puck at centre and scored into the empty cage for his second of the game.

Shots favoured Surrey 30-29.

A frustrating result for the Dogs as they were "right there" against a Conference leader for 40 minutes, only to lose in the third period. Somewhat reminiscent of the game in Powell River last Friday although the Dogs never had the lead in that one.

Time to turn the page to prepare for Langley tomorrow.

Dogs visit Capitals tonight....

Greetings from Courtenay, as we prepare to make way down Island for Duncan.

Catch the pregame show tonight on 93.3 The Peak FM as the Dogs visit the Capitals in Duncan for the second Saturday in a row after they topped the Caps 6-2 a week ago tonight.

What a difference a week can make. The Dogs left Duncan last Saturday night with a perfect 3 and 0 record. They return tonight at 3 and 3 after three straight losses to Coquitlam, Nanaimo and Powell River.

Peaks and Valleys. Even keel. Not too high or too low. A great early season example.

Recently retired Devin Timberlake will be my 2nd Intermission guest tonight. Don't miss it.

Kings 4 Dogs 1, Dogs visit Caps tonight

The Dogs have lost three in a row now after a three game winning streak to open the season after a 4-1 loss to the Kings in Powell River last night.

The Dogs were in penalty trouble from the get-go, down twice in the first four minutes of the game, but they killed them both off. The best save of the first period might have been Kings goalie Jamie Phillips robbing Josh Mitchell on a diving glove save across the crease.

After a scoreless first period the Kings opened the scoring on a controversial goal (from the Dogs point of view) early in the second. With the Kings already on the power play, defenceman Chris Williams would come below the tops of the circles after the whistle and get into a scrum behind the Dogs net, headlocking Tanner Hicks behind the Dogs net seeing both players head to the box, and the draw supposed to be heading to the neutral zone. The Dogs would argue that point with the officials but it fell on deaf ears, and allegedly profaine mouths, as the officials refused.

The draw remained in the zone, and on the ensuing puck drop it ended up immediately in the net for a 1-0 Kings lead. Against a team as good as the Kings, a team that hadn't allowed a goal in over 148 minutes at that point, every goal is huge and you can ill afford to allow a single goal, better yet one under those circumstances.

You ESPECIALLY cannot allow a goal on your powerplay. It has to be your equalizer, but that's how the Kings went up 2-0 as Steven Schmidt found a loose puck at centre and made a nice move on the breakaway.

The Dogs battled back to get on the board late in the period on a great shift by the Kalashnikovs on the ice with Dylan Nowakowski as Arty found Yan on the doorstep from a pass behind the net to make it 2-1. Max Fenkell would then come up with a huge save on a breakaway to keep it 2-1 before the Dogs drew a penalty with 11 seconds to play in the period to begin the third on the powerplay.

Instead of the powerplay coming up with a big one to even it up, it was the Kings scoring again shorthanded, just 11 seconds into the period on a point shot that hit Steven Schmidt in front and went in to make it 3-1 and take all the win out of the Dogs sails. Evan Richardson would finish the scoring converting a breakaway at the seven minute mark for the 4-1 final.

Faust Fantastic, Clippers 5 Dogs 2, Adam Todd gone to the WHL, Alberni Golf Club Men's Club update...

An exciting game last night at the Dog Pound, for the first half at least, but not the result that the Dogs or their fans wanted as the Clippers won the first game this season of the "hump series" 5-2 at the Dog Pound.

The Dogs failed to score first for the second straight game, the second straight game they have lost and the second they have lost this season. Billy Faust, and the Dogs failing to capitalize on power play chances, were the difference in this one. Faust was especially outstanding late in the second when the Dogs had an extended 5 on 3, making back to back to back to back sensational saves.

Click here to read the boxscore

Of concern to Dogs fans has to be the absence of  Dylan Nowakowski in the 3rd period, and the late game injury to Trent Dorais.

Next up for the Dogs is a visit to Powell River Friday.

Another concern is the apparent departure of Goalie Adam Todd - click to read more HERE

Here's the latest Alberni Golf Club Men's Club Update. As always, thanks to Gerry for sending it along....

Last Sunday October 2, was the final day of the Men’s Club for another year. Many thanks to Fred Fredrickson and his committee for all their hard work in making this season as successful as it was. The weather played a big part in the slow start, but once the weather improved it was business a usual.

The season concluded with the Dave Gray Contracting four man best ball. It was good to see Dave out playing on Sunday with Brother Fred. The first place team was the foursome of Keith Gauthier, Art Fowler and Father and Son Sam and Brett Parhar. Second spot went to Wayne Johnstone, Preban Rasmussen, Dennis Debolt and Frank Sheare, with the final gross prize going to Bruce MacDonald, Cory Nielson, Jim Proteau and Gerry “I can’t believe I won a gross prize” Fagan. On the net side taking first was Craig Acland, Steve Acland, Livio Tedesco and Ron Clark, second went to Bill Lekich, Jim Petersen, Doug Stoutley and Masami Hirayama. Third low net went to Gerry Blender, Clint Wilson, Joe Baker and Dennis Hillman, fourth place winners were Bob Price, Kevin Carlton, Jacques Giovetti and John Jones, with fifth place going to Wolf Suhr, Ned Stewart, Vic Carlton and Don McGowan.

In the ball sweep, Brett Parhar had the best of the day shooting 73 taking home 3 balls. Next was Steve Acland winning 2 balls for his 75, followed by Jim Proteau who won 1 ball with 76, next was Craig Acland and Preban Rasmussen winning 1 ball each for shooting 77. On the net side was Dennis Debolt shooting 65, winning 3 balls, next was Jacques Giovetti who won 2 balls with 66. Then came Doug Stoutley and Clint Wilson both with 68, taking home 2 balls each, followed by Wolf Suhr who won I Ball for shooting 69.

Closet to the pin winners were Cal Davies on no. 2, Bill Barrett collected $49 for the Charity Closest to the pin on no. 4, Ron Clark  on  no 13, Dave Gray on no 17, and . Joe Baker for his second shot on no 11. The winner of the West Wind Pub long drive was Frank Sheare.

Fred Fredrickson presented Ann Evans of the Special Olympics with $ 700 that was raised through the Men’s Club Charity Closest to the pin each week. There was also Trophies given out to the 2011 Club Champion Jim  Proteau as  well as the runner up Jacques Giovetti. Also trophies went to the Flight A winner Darrell Van Os and runner up Cory Nielson, as well as the Flight B winner Bill Kriwokon and runner up Jules Gaudreault. There were also many year end draws for Men’s Club Members only.

That’s it for another golfing season, see you in the Spring..

Nowakowski named BCHL Player of the Week!

Congrats to Dylan Nowakowski for being named the BCHL's Player of the Week.

Read more about if from the BCHL website here

In case you missed it. Nowakowski actually had a hat trick in the game Friday against Victoria as the first goal of the game was his, but was incorrectly credited to Josh Mitchell. As far as I am aware, the Bulldogs are in the process of changing that goal. So he's maybe even more deserving of the award if you change that assist that game to a goal, for a three-goal game! Congrats "Nowa" - as the guys call him...now win it again this week!
Our Broadcast takes to the air tonight at 6:45 with the play-by-play to follow at 7:00. Our 1st Intermission guest will be Bulldogs Forward Lars Hepso

Thanks as always to Kaicee for the pictures.

Dogs pick up third straight to open 10th Anniversary season, franchise record, host Express today "Pink the Rink"

Great win tonight for the AVB as they topped the Capitals 6-2 in Duncan to run their record to a perfect 3 and 0, the best start in Franchise History. The only time the Dogs started a season better was 2004-2005 when they started 2 and 0 but then lost game three of the season 6-1.

It was 1-0 Dogs just short of seven minutes into the first as they scored first for the third straight game, picking up their first shorthanded goal of 2011-2012 as Trent Dorais made a perfect spin-o-rama backhand pass to Justin Morello right down the middle of the slot where he ripped one home five-hole.

The lead was 2-0 with 4:30 left in the first when Josh Mitchell picked up a loose puck after a big hit on the fore-check by Tyler Berkholtz and found Lars Hepso in the slot where he snapped one home for his third goal in as many games to open the season.

The Caps would call Time Out to slow the momentum and it appeared to work as just 17 seconds later they got on the board with a Jacob Charles marker to make it 2-1 as he put one home high glove side on a feed by Devin Gannon.

The Dogs 4th line would draw a penalty late in the first and the Dogs capitalized on the opportunity to make it 3-1 after one period as Dylan Nowakowski followed up his hat trick from last night, just like Jacob Charles, burying a rebound in front with 1.8 ticks left on the clock as Josh Mitchell found Tyler Berkholtz on the right wall where he threw the puck on net.

It was 4-1 before the second period was even 30 seconds old on a mad scramble as Justin Morello banged his second of the game home from Trent Dorais and Dylan Nowakowski, resulting in Michael Doan being pulled in favour of AP Backup Jackson Jane of the VIJHL's Kerry Park Islanders.

A scary hit with a delayed penalty already coming to the Capitals by Josh Monk on Evan Tironese saw Monk pick up a 5 Minute Major for Boarding, resulting in a full 2 minute 5 on 3 for the Bulldogs. A night after a scary hit into the end boards in the NHL resulted in a broken femur and now speculation that the career of the player in question might be over, it was not a nice sight to see.

After watching the Monk hit again it is not a vicious hit, more of a lean or a shove, and as such you could say that there was no intent. At the same time, it is a dangerous place to initiate contact under the circumstances of the icing being waved off on the play and Tironese racing in first for the puck towards the end boards, not yet having touched the puck.

They would connect on the two-man advantage to make it 5-1 as Brandon Halls roofed a wrister from the slot for his first career goal at 7:05 from Dylan Nowakowski. Less than two minutes later another powerplay goal saw Justin Morello complete his first career hat trick as he took a Tyler Berkholtz pass and drove the net and stuffed it home to make it 6-1 Dogs.

The only goal the rest of the way came from Matt Brown a minute and a half into the third as he squeaked one home from a bad angle to make it 6-2 but that was all that the Caps could muster.

The Dogs went 3 for 3 on the power play while the Caps went 0 for 2. The Dogs have yet to allow a powerplay goal this season.

No rest for the wicked as the Dogs are right back at it tomorrow afternoon at the Pound for a 2:30pm puck drop as the Coquitlam Express are back for their second visit in 8 days after the Dogs won 5-1 last Saturday night. Catch the pregame show on 93.3 The Peak at 2:15

It is still very early in the season and the Dogs haven't won anything yet so don't start planning any parades. However, you should get down to the rink to watch this team if you haven't done so yet, as they are a fun team to watch, and so far, they are finding ways to win games.
