It was a hard fought game at the Pound, but in the end the Dogs couldn't fight hard enough to come back from another deficit on home ice as they have on several occasions already this season.
The Dogs started the game well, creating several great scoring chances around the Kings net. The best player for Powell River early in the game might have been goaltender Josh Watson though, as he made 3 or 4 highlight reel stops early to keep the game scoreless.
The Bulldogs power play went to work on a 2 man advantage in the first period but they couldn't find the net. Everyone would want me to jump on the Dogs power play as I write this, but I'm going to give just as much credit to the Kings penalty kill as I'm going to hang it on the power play for not getting it done.
You just can't win them all, plain and simple. It was a 1-1 game with under seven minutes left when the Kings scored the kind of goal that wins a 2-1 game - a face off win, a shot from the line through a maze of traffic, and a rebound found through a mad scramble.
It was a much better game than 9-1, but in the end it was still a Powell River win as they are the only team to beat the Dogs so far this season.
It's only two games, but I really like Kent Lewis' team and some of the players the Kings have.
Kent has had nothing but nice things to say about the Dogs and their fans and the City of Port Alberni over the last couple of years. It was nice to see that returned a bit as the Kings players came out to receive a nice round of applause when they were announced as the stars of the game. Only in Alberni?
Should be a good one tomorrow. I'm off to bed as I'm ON LOCATION for THE PEAK tomorrow morning. work work work!
