MIDGET BULLDOGS BEAT BEARS, CLIP CLIPPERS
The Alberni Valley Midget A Bulldogs won away on November 29 and at home on November 30th for a 4 point weekend.
On Saturday they shook off road legs and injuries to eke out a 4-3 victory over the Juan de Fuca Grizzlies at Bear Mountain. Alberni took the lead early in the first period when Myles Fitzgerald scored on a power play with assists from Sheldon Trees and Catlin MacLeod. Late in the second it was MacLeod from Trees on the second power play opportunity to make it 2-0. The Grizzlies got one back to end the second frame 2-1, but continued to be undone by penalties. On the their third power play of the game, Trees scored from MacLeod and Isherwood, then repeated from MacLeod and Dustin Diemert in the middle of the third period. As the clock wound down the Bulldogs 4-1 lead looked safe. But Juan de Fuca did not give up, pulling their goalie to increase the pressure. It almost worked, as they scored with less than 10 seconds left, and then again with only 3 seconds on the clock, but still came up short.
Home at Weyerhauser on Sunday, the Bulldogs faced off with Nanaimo. It was end to end for the first 10 minutes. Then Darrin Oscienny was in the right place the right time to snap in the rebound from Macleod’s shot on the open side behind the goalie. Trees picked up the other assist. MacLeod scored from Oscienny early in the second to take a two goal lead. In the middle of the period, Nanaimo connected twice on the power play to tie it up. With four minutes to go, Trees scored with an assist from Isherwood to end the period up by a single goal. The Alberni defence gave up few opportunities and Matt Larose shut down almost everything that got by, including some acrobatic moves on the penalty kills. Early in the third, the Bulldogs finally got a power play goal of their own after five chances. Trees wound past the defence then backhanded the puck in high on the right side. Oscienny and MacLeod collected the assists. Boden Wangler topped it off with an empty netter in the last minute of play for a 5-2 win.
Assistant Coach Dave McConnell noted that superior conditioning made a difference in this game. Alberni stood up to the visitors’ physical play and outskated them through the third period. Head Coach Brent Demerais said he was happy with the game. “They played awesome. The whole team was awesome. They really skated today. We got great goal tending all weekend (From Eddie Dyson on Saturday and Larose Sunday), and the defence really picked it up. We were much better than Nanaimo in our own end.”
Thanks again to team sponsors GDM Boom & Sort Ltd. and Rain Coast Erosion Control Ltd. The Midget A Bulldogs are at home this weekend. They play Victoria Racquet Club at 3:00 PM on December 6 and will host Juan de Fuca at 2:30 PM on December 7. Come out and support the home team.
