Sean Avery suspended six games by NHL for comments about ex-girlfriends
NEW YORK - The NHL has suspended Dallas Stars agitator Sean Avery for six games for making a crude comment deemed detrimental to the game.
The decision comes a day after Avery's hearing in New York with NHL commissioner Gary Bettman.
Avery has also agreed to seek professional anger-management evaluation, according to nhl.com.
`Mr. Avery has expressed remorse for his recent comments and has sought a professional anger management evaluation,' Bettman said in a statement. `I will require that he follow through with that process as a condition of his returning to the ice and that he complies with any and all recommendations.'
Avery will not be eligible to play again for the Stars until Dec. 16, when Dallas hosts the Phoenix Coyotes. He already has served two games of the suspension - Tuesday's game against Calgary and Wednesday's game against Edmonton.
Avery landed in hot water Tuesday when he told reporters in Calgary that he didn't understand why fellow NHLers were falling in love with his `sloppy seconds.' The comment was interpreted as a shot at Flames defenceman Dion Phaneuf, who is dating Canadian actress Elisha Cuthbert, Avery's ex-girlfriend.(The Canadian Press)
