Mark MacMillan and Nolan Graham on THE PEAK tomorrow

Don't miss Mark and Coach Nolan Graham just after 8:10am P.S.T. tomorrow morning on 93.3 The Peak and online at www.933thepeak.com !!

Hammer

Mark MacMillan ranked 135th in Final Central Scouting Rankings.

One of my favorite pictures of Mark from early in the season as he scored a late third period game tying goal.

The hits just keep on coming for the Dogs organization, as Mark MacMillan was included in Central Scouting's final rankings today ahead of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.
(image: www.nhl.com)

The full list can be found HERE

Forgive us for getting excited, but this is just the SECOND player in Alberni Valley Bulldogs Franchise History to be named to Central Scouting Services pre-draft rankings.

Yes, I goofed, earlier saying that Mark was the first ever Bulldog ranked. My bad. Usually I'm pretty good for this stuff but former Bulldog Captain (and current Providence Bruin) Devin Timberlake was also ranked.

I got an email from Bulldog Bussie Ron Sandberg earlier today saying he thought that Devin was ranked before. Also kudos to Linda Yaredic for emailing me saying she thought Devin was ranked too.

I texted Devin and asked him straight out if he was ranked. He said YES, and "thanks for the bad memory Hammer"

Sorry for forgetting Timby!

I guess the hope now would be that Mark will be the first ever Bulldog DRAFTED as Devin unfortunately didn't get his name called at the draft.  If Mark doesn't get picked, Devin is living proof that not getting drafted doesn't mean one single thing! His work ethic overcame no hearing his name called, saw him off to college, and now sees him playing pro hockey.

For everyone that watched Mark go from a "who knows what he can do" rookie early in the season, to a "if this kid doesn't look out he's going to get himself drafted" rookie as the season progressed, this has to be pretty gratifying.

Congrats to Mark, Mitch and the rest of the MacMillan family, exciting news!

NO, this isn't a sure bet that he will get drafted. Having said that, it certainly says something when the kid went from not on the CSS list (pre season, mid-term rankings) to all of a sudden ranked 135 out of all Eligible Domestic Skaters.

One of my favorite Mark goals....

I am doing my best to line up Mark for an interview on THE PEAK, stay tuned.

More on Dziurzynski - VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS, INTERVIEW ON THE PEAK THIS MORNING, Alberni Golf Update

Here's some video from the playoffs....

Please give it 5 stars :)

Don't forget "Dizzy" will be on THE PEAK morning show with me just after 8:10am today.

And here's an article from the Alberni Valley Times - Dziurzynski bound for Ottawa Senators

And here's an update from Gerry at the Alberni Golf Club...

In Men’s Club action on Sunday, Jaques Giovetti had the game of the day shooting a gross 77 taking home 2 balls, with Cory Nielson carding an 81 winning 1 ball. On the net side of the competition Fred Fredrickson came in with a 72 to win 2 balls while Steve Pointon shot a 73 collecting 1 ball for his effort. The Charity closest to the pin on #2 pocketing $11 was Jim Proteau, other closest to the pin winners were Steve Acland on # 4 no one on #13, Steve White on # 17 and for his second shot on #11 it was Jacques Giovetti. Money pot winners on Sunday were Jacques Giovetti who got the only 2 on #13 with a chip in and the only deuce on # 4 was recorded by Cory Nielson, congratulations Gentlemen.

I understand that one of the Club’s Directors out for a leisurely game of golf on Sunday afternoon playing with his wife and the Hillmans had an amazing shot on hole #2. Congratulations go out to Gerry Toms who recorded a hole-in-one. The way I hear it, using his driver Gerry hit a low screamer across the creek bounced in front of the green hit the flag stick doing 100 miles per hour and came to rest at the bottom of the cup. Way to go Gerry. Club Captain Craig Acland and myself will be expecting our drink next week. For those who dream of a hole-in-one don’t forget to buy your hole-in-one insurance in the Pro Shop, just in case.

Up next for the Men’s Club is the Westwind Pub/Dave Gray Contracting Partner with a Pro competition. When you come into the clubhouse on Sunday morning, you pick a number out of a hat, the corresponding Pro playing in the Masters tournament will be your partner for the day. Your net score added to the Pro’s gross score is where you will finish in our event. It doesn’t matter what the Pro has shot already just what he shoots on Sunday. He could be dead-last in the field and come through with a spectacular round as your partner.
This is an individual event, be sure to register in your own foursome or as a single and you will be placed on a team. The shotgun start takes place at 8am, try to be there a few minutes early so you can get to your assigned tees on time. The usual fee of $10 applies. Don’t forget to register for the money pot, ball sweep and Charity closest to the pin for $2 each.

Something to keep in mind ladies and gentlemen. The Rotary Club’s 2nd annual hole-in-one competition. Qualifying rounds to be held May 26,27,28 and 29 at the Alberni Golf Club. Qualifying will take place on the driving range from 11AM until 7PM each day with the final being held on Sunday May 30th. To Qualify all you do is hit balls to a designated hole on the driving range and the 5 closest to the pin each day, 20 in all, will be eligible to shoot for big prizes on the final day. You can purchase golf balls from the attendant on the driving range for $1 per ball or 12 balls for $10.There will be qualifying prizes awarded each day. On the final day all 20 contestants go to one of the par 3’s on the golf course and are entitled to hit 3 balls at the hole from different locations on the tee. If you get a hole-in-one on the first ball you win $100,000 If you sink your 2nd ball on the first shot you win a brand new car or truck and if you get it in on the third ball you win a $10,000 dream vacation. Golfers of all levels are invited to come out and try your luck, challenge your friends make this a fun filled event with the possibility of cashing in big time. All funds raised will go to the Rotary’s Scholarship Fund. As most golfers have short memories, I will be reminding you from time to time until the event happens.

Rumours swirl in Bulldog land - David Dziurzynski

Hope you all had a nice Easter Weekend.

For me, it was pretty low key. I checked out the Bulldog Spring Camp for a short time, hung out at home with the family, watched a couple NHL and WHL playoff games, some of the Houston Open yesterday and enjoyed a couple great dinners.

And then I almost lost those dinners watching the last minute of the Canucks game last night. Scary scary stuff. I'm the perpetual defender of goaltenders, but Roberto Luongo looks like a water logged chunk of liccorice in there.

Ah, rumours. Man do I hate 'em.

You are probably thinking "Yeah right Hammer"
No, really. I really do hate 'em with a  passion. Now you probably find that pretty funny with the business I work in. Let me explain.

What's the allure for me in knowing a rumour, when I'm not allowed to repeat it, or publish it? It becomes a burden more than anything as I KNOW the scoop, but I can't REPEAT it. I'm approached about it endlessly, and I have to plead ignorance because I don't want to rock the boat and release or confirm someone elses news. I say one thing, and the next thing you know, it's on a message board "Hammer said......." And I have some angry people to deal with. It's happened before.

The long and the short of it is this - Give me a PRESS RELEASE and I am a happy guy.

This goes on all season long, and all off season too. Throw in the fact that there is an extremely rabid fan base here (I call it "Montreal West" for a reason) and I'm put in a pretty tough position. I run the risk of looking like I'm not doing my job if I'm not chasing and reporting on every rumour that comes up at the rink or in Tim Horton's.

I look forward to the day that I might move up the ladder in the Hockey Media world, so I can leave the "reporting" to the reporters. I am NOT a reporter. I'm a play-by-play guy, I'm a Morning Show Host and a Talk Show Host. However that's not necessarily the end of it. The fact that I'm a bit of a "one-man-band" puts me square in the middle of everything which isn't an easy tap dance sometimes.

My biggest fear, is the biggest danger. That being - sometimes rumours are sometimes just that - rumours.
I have heard more things that AREN'T true, as opposed to things that are indeed TRUTH/FACT/REALITY, etc. You get the picture.

The old Port Alberni saying goes "If you haven't heard a rumour by 9am, start one!"

Let me be really clear with this one - I understand and respect 100% why everyone wants to hear the rumours, talk about the rumours, etc etc etc. From the NHL to the Junior Leagues fans give their respective teams their ALL. Their time, their money, their hearts. When you are emotionally invested in your team to that level and when you are as passionate as a die hard fan is, you just gotta know the scuttlebutt. How does that old saying go again about smoke and fire? Hearing a rumour about your team is sometimes the first step in hearing the NEWS..

Having said all of the above, this one is a bit more than just a "whisper" in a coffee shop, so I'm going to bow to public pressure and other pressures to break my own personal rule to not talk about the dreaded "rumour".

I lost count at emails and texts asking me about this one over the weekend at over 100.

I sat on the news since the end of the week hoping news would come out officially over the weekend, and I returned to the radio station this morning to at least a dozen voicemails from excited fans and sponsors asking the same two questions -

#1 Have I heard "the news"

and

#2 "is it really true"

The answers would be "YES" and "I THINK SO"

The rumour is - that Bulldogs Forward David Dziurzynski is set to sign a developmental deal with the Ottawa Senators.

Given that this isn't confirmed, that's all the info that you will get at this point.

The fact that this all came down on April fools was a cruel, cruel, cruel twist.

An almost unbelievable story - A guy signing an NHL deal straight out of Junior A, all coming down on April Fools? Come on!

To make matters worse - I played some April 1st pranks earlier on in the day on several of the people that ended up passing details on this story on to ME.

I guess you reap what you sow, eh? I had to ask several people over and over "You know April Fools ends at 12noon, RIGHT?"

No offense to David Dziurzynski, but I'm sure he understands that for some of us when we heard the story, we said "no way"

A question. Who is the last guy to sign an NHL deal straight out of Junior A?

Anyone? Beuller, Beuller?

With all the press his linemates got this season (Mitch MacMillan with 60 plus goals, Mark MacMillan with a team record for points by a rookie, with NHL scouts showing up in droves to watch his games down the stretch) it may be surprising to some that Dziurzynski is the guy that all of a sudden is going to make a major hockey jump.

It's not surprising to me in the least.

Ok, Ok, I'll concede I never thought he'd be signing an NHL contract right out of Junior. But I did see great things in him, like many other hockey watchers.

I still remember in early February when "Dizzy" lit up the Interior Conference with dominating performances in Penticton, Westside, and Trail - on back to back to back nights. I said during that broadcast in Penticton that if he continues to play that way, he could very well be the best player in the league. When I asked the coach about his play on the postgame show that night, he said the exact same thing "Playing that way, he could be the best player in the league"

Well it seems that he garnered more than enough attention for himself down the stretch to give himself an opportunity to further his hockey career.

It couldn't have happened to a better kid.

And it's pretty incredible to see a guy that was voted as the teams "Unsung Hero Award" at the end of the regular season end up anything but "Unsung" less than two months later.

Calling the games, we called Dizzy several things. I used to call him "the great 8" with apologies to Alexander Ovechkin. I never thought it would be a problem, with AO being in the NHL and Dizzy playing in the BCHL.

Yet all of a sudden I'm almost worried I'm going to get a cease and desist letter from the Ovechkin camp saying I'm stealing a nickname.

We also called him "the big man" and I likened him to the World Famous Martin Mars Waterbomber - Big, Red and White, and with that graceful "delay swoop" he did as he crossed the blueline.

Maybe now we should call him the best player to wear an Alberni Valley Bulldog uni? Your thoughts?

Fans of the Senators - both in Ottawa and in Binghamton - should be excited about this kid and his future within your organizations.

No, he's not the High Level Major Junior (OHL/QMJHL/WHL) or NCAA or Euro Pro prospect that might step right in and light up the NHL Playoffs.

He is - a late bloomer prospect that went from not knowing where he was going to play next year just two months ago, to apparently signing a developmental deal with an NHL team, which is a pretty incredible story.

Check the Sens website, check the TSN and Sportsnet "Hockey Insiders" for further information OR check back here and I'll post something when I get confirmation.

For any Sens fans that stumble here, this is a tiny example of what "Dizzy" can do. One of my favorites from him this season.

Canucks + working on final "Around the Pound" posting + make a donation!

Admittedly, I don't watch much Canucks Hockey during the Bulldogs season. Just no time. I did watch the game last night though, and I was pretty impressed. The sequence in the third period when the 'Yotes couldn't get out of their own zone for several minutes where the 'Nucks seemed to move the puck at will was an impressive sight to see.

Luongo still doesn't look right. I don't get how a goalie as BIG as he is, always looks so SMALL. Is that just me? He seems to fold up like an accordion the way he moves, getting smaller and smaller. Maybe just the way I see it, but it seems whenever the action gets closer he gets smaller. I know you need to shut those holes but you also don't want to open up the NET! Having said all that, he played great last night so I should zip my lip.

To those of you that haven't followed the blog when the 'Dogs are out and I start talking freely and openly about anything I please and anything I get passionate about.....well lets just say for some of the long-time readers, the fun is REALLY about to start, haha!

(Of course I'll still be talking Bulldogs, but they aren't the focus as much anymore as the news starts to slow down to a trickle pretty quickly)

At the request of many people - some via comments on the blog, some through emails; I have been working the last couple of days on getting a downloadable copy of the final edition of "Around the Pound, The Bulldog Hockey Show" from Monday night.

It's challenging, as the show was well over an hour long. I'm sure many of you have no clue what I'm really talking about when I get into the techie stuff....but it's easier said than done when it comes to finding a company to HOST a file of that size, that will also let the general public download that same gigantic file.

It's a work in progress, so be sure to check back later!

While you wait, why not MAKE A DONATION!!!!???? (Look for the DONATE button, upper right hand side under ("Like the Blog? Donations Appreciated")

Yes, I know.....what amazing timing to really "strike while the iron is hot" by me. Wait until the season is OVER, and THEN put up a "Donate" button. I guess I didn't want anyone to feel obligated, haha!

Honestly, I just simply didn't have time while the season was going on to do it, and I only noticed recently that other bloggers have a donate button so I thought I would follow suit.

And mostly, getting something BACK for what I do here is the last thing on my mind. I do everything I do on here for the fans, for the parents and siblings and grandparents and extended family.....so you can all feel closer to your boys when they are so far away.

Or so close, yet STILL so far away.

The best thing I can recieve is an email or a personal face to face "thank you" for my efforts. And I am lucky enough to have had plenty of both throughout the season!

Having said all that, if you have enjoyed the blog and wish to make a donation, I certainly won't say NO. I know full well that I will never get back from the blog what I put into it, but I'm fine with that. Like I said already, its more about what YOU all get out of the blog, not what I get.

If you wish to make a donation, click the donate button. It will require you to sign up for a PayPal Account. For some people, especially the "old school" readers out there, that's probably a scary thing.

Fear not, with over 200 MILLION accounts worldwide PayPal is the #1 most trusted, safe, and legitimate way on the web to make transactions. You connect your bank account or credit card with your account and voila.

I am NOT RESPONSIBLE if you start E-BAY'ing everything under the sun "oooh, a Bulldog puck from 2005-2006" and you get in trouble with the Missus or the Mister in the house!

Last but not least, don't worry, if I don't get a single red cent donated I won't stop doing what I do on the blog!!!!!

Here's a story from the Alberni Valley Times today regarding the Dogs season ending Saturday. Click HERE to read it.

Hammer

Saturday, March 27, 2010

The Kings are off to league finals with 3-0 Game 7 win.

The Dogs had more than ample opportunities, racing out to a 20 to 8 shots advantage after one, but they couldn't capitalize. The Kings found two in the second, a seeing eye wrister from the point, and a beautiful goal on a puck that bounced over a Bulldog stick that saw Brenden Forbes in alone where he ripped one top shelf.

Final shots 41-25 Bulldogs, Final Score 3-0 Kings with an empty netter.

Nothing for the Dogs to hang their heads about with this one. You came out hard, you played hard, you couldn't get any puck luck around the net. The way she goes sometimes.

Good luck Kings, great effort and great battles.

Great season Dogs, well beyond what anyone could have ever dreamed possible, even if right now it feels like a nightmare ending.

More later.

A Salmon made an appearance, sadly not in a winning cause.

Bulldogs Line up tonight....

Two changes tonight to the Bulldogs line up. Jeff Reppucci comes out of the line up while Brody Lynott comes back in. Up front, Evan Richardson comes out and Robert Lindores comes back into the lineup.

Tyler Berkholtz and Trent Dorais are also not dressed.

Frank Slubowski starts in net.

Game 7 TONIGHT

Thanks to Dennis See for the great picture.

Game 7 goes tonight at the Dog Pound. It's not yet 12 noon and when we arrived back at the Multiplex there was a line up outside the Bulldogs Office for those purchasing seats for the available public, and there is currently a long lineup upstairs in the upper lounge of season ticket holders picking up their seats for tonights game.

A winner moves on loser goes home Game 7 at what I'm sure will be a SOLD RIGHT OUT Dog Pound.

What more could you ask for, besides a win?

A tip of my cap to Mark who posted this in the comments section of the blog.....It sure inspired me!

Alberni, the time is on you to grow as individuals and as men. You have gotten this far on the backs and accomplishments of certain members to lead you, to motivate you, and to put the puck in the net. Tonight requires efforts from the most unlikely places. Everyone must be a leader, must contribute, and grow beyond your current level of play. One game to be extraordinary, each and every one of you. Take the wind out of their sails early with a quick goal, or a big clean hit. Make them chase you to the finish line. New heroes will be created tonight, play like there is no tomorrow! I would say 'good luck,' but it will be big hearts that determine the outcome... let it be your time Alberni!

Well said Mark.

Catch the pregame show with Rick and I starting at 6:45 with the puck drop and play-by-play to follow at 7:00 on 93.3 The Peak FM, and our website www.933thepeak.com

See you tonight, bring the noise and wear red!

For the first time in Bulldog history, a series will go a one game "winner take all" as the Kings took a 3-1 win on home ice Friday night to force Game 7 in this Coastal Conference Final Series.

Peaks and Valleys, ups and downs. The Dogs don't have any time to be DOWN as tomorrow night they will play the first Game 7 in team history, and the first Game 7 at the Alberni Valley Multiplex. On the line is the right to battle for the Fred Page Cup. And a season. And some Junior Hockey Careers.

In regards to getting back UP for tomorrow after losing tonight -  as Assistant Coach Paul Esdale said on the post game show "you gotta park it"

This was a tense game from the get go, with no scoring through the first 40 minutes of play. A crowd of over 1000 people was certainly entertained even with the lack of scoring. It had the atmosphere of the crowd I talked about from the past that I had seen in the Rec Complex.

The Kings had the shot and chance advantage through the first period, but in the second the Dogs came back with chances of their own as the teams were tied in shots at 22 aside into period three. The Kings would have several great chances a second period power play but Frank Slubowski came up with several huge stops, most notably a pad save on a cross ice one-timer attempt.

The Kings drew first blood just over a minute into the third period when Chad Niddery drove the net down the wing and put a shot off the shoulder of Slubowski and up in the air before it fell into the back of the net. Just over two minutes later it was a 1-1 tie when David Dziurzynski dished the puck perfectly to Kevin Ross who put a quick one-timer on net. On the rebound that resulted Mitch MacMillan somehow found a way on the scramble to get a puck home and over the line while he was down tied up with a defender. The score stayed 1-1 until just over 8 minutes to play when the Kings went ahead 2-1 on a power play of their own when Mitch Labreche knocked down a Reid Campbell shot from the point straight down as Frank Slubowski was attempting to make the save high. The Dogs would protest that it was a high stick. It looked like it was a good goal in my opinion, but at the same time I'm high up and maybe it looked different to the players who are lower down on ice level. The closest the Dogs had to evening the game might have been on a low Frank Riddle one timer from the top of the left circle that snuck through Josh Watson low and appeared destined to be crossing the line until someone saved the day and cleared it off the line. The net came off on the play and it remained that way for a long time until it was spotted, which could have made things very interesting if the Dogs had scored with the net dislodged.

The Kings sealed the deal into an empty net after an earlier goal was waved off by an off-side when Matt Bodie put a saucer from his own zone off a faceoff win high and down the ice into the open cage with 24 seconds to play.

Should be fun night at the Dog Pound! Pack the shack and come support the guys.

It's Game 7 winner take all and as anyone knows anything can happen. I think it's natural to expect a win coming back home up 3-1 in a series with back to back wins on the road. When that didn't happen, it's natural to expect a win in Game 6 heading back on the road as the Dogs have been such a great road team, and they were heading to a place where the Dogs had some recent success, taking 4 straight. Having said all this, the deciding thing the last two games is that with the stakes this high it isn't about EXPECTING, it's about going out and DOING. Plain and simple fundamentals. Skating, shooting, hitting, team work, wanting it more and winning battles. No more pressure and expectations, just come out and play the game of your lives. The Kings have done it the last two games with their backs against the wall. Now that the Bulldogs are there too with their backs against the wall, it will be interesting to see how they react.

Talking at the dinner table after the game, the topic of past game sevens came up in regards with any experience that any of us had. My story is a neat one. I have called ONE Game 7 in my 10 plus years of calling hockey games. It was during the 2001-2002 season, and it was in the Conference Finals just like this one. Someone asked how that season ended. My answer?  "The Royal Bank Cup Championship Game"

You gotta believe, and I know everyone in Bulldog land does.

That's all I have for now, bed time with an early boat tomorrow.

Bulldogs Line up tonight....

One change to the Dogs line up tonight, as Brody Lynott comes out of the line up, and Jeff Reppucci comes back in.

Tyler Berkholtz, Trent Dorais and Sam Mitchell are also out of the line up.

Frank Slubowski gets the start in net.

There is a chance of more changes closer to game time.

Dogs @ Kings Game 6 tonight.

A huge one tonight as it's another "win or go home" game for the Powell River Kings, and a "win and go to the BCHL Finals" game for the Alberni Valley Bulldogs as these two teams go at it again at the Powell River Recreational Complex.

After dropping Game 5 last night, the Bulldogs continue to lead the series 3 games to 2.

As much as they had to love playing in front of the first sell out last night that any of the players have ever seen at the Dog Pound, I'm sure they are just as excited to try and win the series tonight in Powell River. That's how it goes in the playoffs. A huge UP leading into a game like last night, a huge DOWN losing it, and now the less than 12 hours later it's UP again, on the bus and heading to Powell River.

The Bulldogs have won 4 straight playoff road games, and 4 straight games in the Powell River Recreation Complex. I know the Dogs are confident in their abilities to win on the road, as they have done it time and again all season. Regular season, playoffs, these guys are road warriors. At the same time I don't expect them to be overconfident, they will be going into this one expecting nothing less than a full on drag 'em out battle against a team that is still on the brink of elimination.

Get it all on 93.3 The Peak with the pregame show at 7:15 tonight from Powell River, with the play-by-play to follow at 7:30.

That's it for now, off to the bus!
