Great story here, as a couple 20 year old players who came to the Dogs looking to further their education and hockey careers are now off to the NCAA level next year.

Two Bulldogs’ Post-Season College Commitments

Port Alberni, BC – Following the conclusion of the most successful playoff run in Alberni Valley Bulldogs team history, the coaches and educational advisor Tom McEvay continue their hard work to promote players to the next level. As a result, we would like to congratulate Chase Paylor and Jay Deo. Both players recently committed to NCAA Division III programs for 2013/14.

Shortly after the season ended, Bulldog’s forward Chase Paylor committed to play for the University of St. Thomas Tommies starting next season.

The 21-year-old Calgary native was acquired just before the trade deadline and played 19 regular season games. He made an immediate impact by adding 13 points in the regular season, including one power play goal and two game-winning goals.

The 6-foot, 175-pound Paylor became the seventh Bulldog to commit to school for next season. The University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minne competes in the MIAC conference.

Also announced today: Team MVP Jay Deo has committed to the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire for 2013/14.

Deo was acquired in the off-season and immediately became a fan favourite through his outstanding and exciting play each and every night. Deo and Rebagliati soon became a very strong tandem and won many games for the Bulldogs this season.

Deo appeared in 43 regular season games for the Bulldogs and posted a .914 save percentage. However, it’s what he did in the playoffs that will be remembered for a long time. Deo backstopped the team to the most successful playoff run in team history, playing in all 14 playoff games en route to an amazing 2.37 GAA and a save percentage of .935.

“I am extremely excited to go to a strong division 3 program that won the national championship last season,” said Jay Deo. Deo continued on to say that “I want to thank all my teammates and the entire Alberni Valley Bulldogs organization for helping me achieve this goal. I couldn't have done it without you guys as well as my family. Alberni will always have a place in my heart and will be an experience I will never forget.”

“We are extremely proud of both Chase and Jay and what they contributed to the organization this season,” said Bulldogs Head Coach and GM Kevin Willison. “They worked hard both on and off the ice to realize their goals and dreams of playing college hockey at respected programs next season,” concluded Willison.

The Alberni Valley Bulldogs family would like to thank Chase and Jay for an exciting season and wish them both continued success in college and in all their future endeavours.

Port Alberni, BC – The Alberni Valley Bulldogs announce today that they have acquired the rights to 1994-born forward Shane O’Brien from the Stratford Cullitons of the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League.

O’Brien was first seen by one of the Alberni Valley Bulldogs’ Ontario-based scouts. Shortly after doing some research into O’Brien, he was invited to attend the Bulldogs’ spring identification camp in Port Alberni this past April. Immediately, the coaches and evaluators were impressed with the speed at which O’Brien thinks and plays the game. He will make a definiate impact to the team’s offense this coming season and will be a treat for fans to watch. “We are extremely happy we were able to come to terms with Stratford and acquire the rights to Shane,” said Alberni Valley Bulldogs head coach and general manager Kevin Willison. “Shane will give the Bulldogs much added speed and offense to our line up.”

Even with an injury that O’Brien sustained at the spring camp, that didn’t slow down his compete level and goal production. That showed the organization that he is a player that the fans in the Alberni Valley will be proud to call their own.

O’Brien put up 47 points in 48 games in the 2012/13 season and come from an organization that has produced many successful Junior A and professional players, including Penticton Vee’s all-rookie team member Brad McClure, Nelson Emerson, Boyd Devereaux, Ed Olczyk, Louie DeBrusk, Bryan Smolinski, and Chris Pronger just to name a few.

The Alberni Valley Bulldogs also take this opportunity to announce two other players that were commited to out of the 2013 spring identification camps.

Victoria-born forward Josh Adkins played this past season with the Peninsula Panthers of the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League. Adkins, born in 1995, put up 11 goals and 32 assists in 46 games with the Panthers and came highly recommended by his former coaches. He also contributed with a game-winning goal against the Powell River Kings in Round 1 of these year’s playoffs. Adkins impressed the coaches and evaluators at the Port Alberni spring identification camp and seemed to make an impact everytime he was on the ice.

“I went into the camp pretty hopeful but I was also nervous because there were many talented players at the camp,” said one of the newest Bulldogs Josh Adkins. “When I was asked to sign at the end of camp I was really relieved because it has been my goal to play in the BCHL for a couple years now. I’m looking forward to playing in front of the best fans in the league and also being a part of such a respected organization and community,” concluded Adkins.

The Bulldogs also want to take this opportunity to announce the commitment of 1995-born defenseman Riley Ostoforoff. Ostoforoff played the last two seasons for the Castlegar Rebels in the KIJHL. This past season, he helped his team win the 2012/13 KIJHL championships and appeared in the Cyclone Taylor Cup which was hosted by the Comox Glacier Kings. “I have heard many great things about the team, the city and the dedication from the fans,” said Ostoforoff. “I had a great experience at camp…and I am excited to (find) out that I have become an Alberni Valley Bulldog.”

Ostoforoff is a stay-at-home defenseman that also plays with a mean-streak. Ostoforoff’s strong skating abilities and compete level makes him a very effective shut-down defenseman. The Alberni Valley Bulldogs would like to welcome Shane, Josh, and Riley to the Bulldogs family. More exciting player announcements are soon to follow.

The public’s first chance to meet these three players will be at the 2nd annual Alberni Valley Bulldogs season kick-off golf tournament held on Saturday, August 17th at the Alberni Golf Club. Please check the Alberni Valley Bulldogs website later this week for more details.

'Dogs open season at Showcase Sept 7th/8th vs Vees/Express

The BCHL has finalized the schedule for September's Bauer BCHL Showcase, being hosted for the second consecutive year at Chilliwack's Prospera Centre.

The Showcase schedule was an item on the recent BCHL annual general meeting last week in Richmond.

Each club will play two games that count towards the regular season standings. Last year at the inaugural event, there were close to 200 scouts from the college and professional ranks taking in the action.

The 2013 event runs from Friday, Sept. 6 to Sunday, Sept. 8. Games will be split between Prospera Centre's main and secondary sheets of ice.

Local Wrestlers Make Team BC, JPII Fun Fair, Men's Club Update, Men's Night Thursday,

Starting with great news from Alberni Wrestling...well done gents!

Alberni Wrestlers Make Canada Games Team

Two local wrestlers travelled to Vancouver this past weekend to compete for a birth on Team BC and be eligible to wrestle in the Canada Games in Quebec this August. Nolan Badovinac  (grade 10, 76kg’s) made the team and Jonathon Spencer (grade 12, 69kg’s) was named as an alternate to the team. 

Nolan Badovinac after winning the Cadet National Championships a couple of months ago found himself competing against wrestlers that were a year or two older. In the Finals he was up against a grade 12 wrestler, Suhkman Sidhu from Abby Traditional School.  After winning the First match in a best of three series, Badovinac had to come from behind to win the second match and claim the birth on the BC team.

Jonathon Spencer made it to the finals after beating Eric Bauer from St Thomas Moore. In the final, Spencer was in tough and lost to Justin Gill from Rick Hansen Secondary in a best of 3 winner take all. Spencer then was named as the Alternate to the BC team in case Gill is not able to compete. 

Head coach John McDonald was pleased with the success of both wrestlers. “Nolan had an opportunity to compete for Canada this summer at the World Fila Cadet Championships in Serbia. However, after making Team BC he will likely turn down this opportunity as the Canada Games only comes around every 4 years. The developmental opportunities that are connected with the Games will pay off for Nolan farther down the road if he plans to stay in the sport beyond high school. Where Nolan is at now in his development this will not be the only time he will likely get to represent his country on the international stage for wrestling. Therefore, choosing to compete for Team BC this summer is the better decision long term.”“For Jonathon it was a positive way to end off a great grade 12 season. Coming second at the Nationals Championships this year was awesome. Being named an alternate to the BC team this weekend compliments the success he has already had.”

 

Nolan Badovinac now has a busy training schedule prior to the games. He will likely travel to Vancouver on weekends and train with the Provincial Team. There will be three training camps in the USA with team BC starting in June and going through July. There will be a staging camp in Vancouver in late July at SFU prior to leaving for the Games in early august in Quebec.

CANADA’S TOP SURFERS BATTLE THIS WEEKEND AT RIP CURL PRO TOFINO

Canadian Surfing Championship takes place June 1^st and 2^nd at Cox Bay in Tofino, BC.

Canada’s largest surfing competition kicks offs this weekend with over 100 registered surfers to compete. Surfers in nine separate divisions will vie for over $30,000 in cash and prizes. The event is the only one in Canada open to all divisions, including; Pro Men, Pro Women, Masters and Longboard.

Officially sanctioned by the Canadian Surfing Association (CSA), the Rip Curl Pro Tofino is the official Canadian Surfing Championship. The CSA recognition means that this weekend’s event will deliver a national champion in each division. Top Canadian surfers Peter Devries, Noah Cohen, and Leah Oke will among the competitors battling for a title.

The Rip Curl Pro Tofino is Canada’s premiere surfing event, attracting spectator crowds of all ages with entertainment on and off the beach. “In it’s seventh year, the Rip Curl Pro Tofino brings Canada’s surf community together with a festival atmosphere in a supernatural setting.” said Event Organizer Myrosha Daley. He added “The event offers more than just competition including; surfboard demos, beach games, live music and shoreline clean up.”

The Rip Curl Pro Tofino starts Saturday June 1^st, 7:00am and will run through Sunday afternoon. 

WOW, how about the continuing story that is the Officating in the NHL Playoffs? Imagine the riot that would have resulted if the Hawks would have lost the game, and the series last night!

Ingram and Mills win Officiating Awards

The BCHL is proud to announce the recipients of the BCHL officiating awards for the 2012-2013 season.

The Kelly Sutherland Award and the Brad Lazarowich Award were created last year to recognize officiating excellence in the BCHL.

The Kelly Sutherland Award for the top referee is presented this year to Jeff Ingram. Jeff is a veteran referee in the BCHL who is currently a Level 6 official. He refereed the BCHL Fred Page Cup this year and was selected to referee in the Western Canadian Championships in Nanaimo, where he was assigned the final game between the Surrey Eagles and Brooks Bandits. 

"Jeff is a quality referee and person.  He has been a top referee in the BCHL for many years and is committed to excellence both on and off the ice," said BCHL Director of Officiating Derek Adams. "Jeff has acted as a mentor to our young referees and is a leader on our staff who sets the bar extremely high for the standard of how we want our games in the BCHL to be officiated". 

Jeff also referees in the WHL and CIS, and was selected to referee the CIS Championships in Saskatoon in 2013. 

The Brad Lazarowich Award for the top linesman is presented to Bevan Mills. Bevan has been a linesman in the BCHL since 2004 and has worked the Fred Page Cup for the past four years. Bevan was also selected to officiate in the Western Canada Cup this year. 

"The mark of a great linesman is one who makes the referee's job easier because he works hard at being proactive in preventing situations from escalating. That's what makes Bevan such a great linesmen" said Adams.  "Bevan is extremely professional and respectful both on and off the ice and is committed to making the officiating team the best team on the ice every night". 

Bevan is also a linesman in the AHL and WHL and was selected to work the 2013 Memorial Cup this year in Saskatoon.

"These awards are a testament to the commitment the BCHL Board of Governors has to recognizing and supporting the officiating program in the BCHL" said Adams. "I congratulate both Jeff and Bevan for receiving these awards, but I am extremely proud of everyone on our officiating staff. There are always going to be some tough games, but our staff consistently comes to the rink every night to work hard and officiate the game in a very fair and professional manner."
