Bulldogs host Clippers, children and students $5!, GREEN MEN, Midget Fusion..

The Bulldogs (10-9-0-3, 3rd Island) are back on home ice in their Movember jerseys tonight as they host the Nanaimo Clippers (12-6-0-2, 2nd Island) at the Dog Pound.

I've been told by a reliable source that the GREEN MEN will be at the game tonight...no NHL, they're out of work too, so nice to hear that they are getting involved in the Junior game. I'm actually friends with the Green Men, who came to visit me this summer. Took them out on Sproat Lake, it was a fun time....

It's student and children night as they can come to the game for just $5.00!!

The Bulldogs are on a two game winning streak, sweeping the weekend in Powell River, while the Clippers have won four in a row including two last weekend over Cowichan. They have been playing great hockey as of late as they are unbeaten in regulation in 7 games, winning 6 of those.

The Bulldogs lead the season series 2-1 with wins of 5-2 and 7-2, but the Clippers won the most recent meeting by a score of 5-0 at the Dog Pound on October 13th. It was just a night after the Dogs had won their fourth in a row with a 7-2 win in Nanaimo. It was the beginning of a six game losing streak for the Dogs, so here's hoping they learnt a thing or two about preperation, and not getting too high after winning two straight, or too low after one loss turned to six!

Congrats to the Midget Fusion, who brought home a bronze medal over the weekend. Sounds like an incredible finish in the bronze game to hold on against Nanaimo.. Thanks Aaron and Leanne Savard for the updates!

FEMALE MIDGET FUSION TAKE HOME THE BRONZE

The Female Midget Fusion took home the Bronze medal in a tournament in Kerry Park on Remembrance Day long weekend.

They played a remarkable 7 games over the three days of incredible female hockey!

In their first game they faced they arch rivals Comox Chiefs who took first place in the league last year. It was a hard-fought, penalty filled game, but in the end, we lost 3 – 1, with Brittney Savard scoring the only goal, assisted by Tia Anderson.  Sarah Dawson faced a tremendous amount of shots and kept her team in the game.  Brittney Savard was MVP.

They came to play in their second game on Saturday against Cowichan Valley.  Tia Anderson started them off with an unassisted goal, and then it was Brittney Savard, unassisted, and Faith Larieviere finished off the first period with a goal assisted by Shellsea Steed.  Angelle Welsh scored the only goal in the second period assisted by Mariah Westra and Brittney Savard.  Then it was Brittney Savard scoring unassisted to start off the third period.  Jessie Vissia scored unassisted, and then Brittney Savard ended the game with her third goal of the game.  Final score was 7 – 2 for the Fusion.  MVP was Tia Anderson

In their first game of 3 on Sunday, they faced Sooke, who ended up winning the tournament.  It was a really great game and the girls fought hard against a really tough team.  They didn’t score any goals but held them off and Sooke didn’t score at all in the third period.  Final score was 5 – 0 for Sooke, and Sarah Dawson got the well deserved MVP!

The second game of the day was against Nanaimo, who they tied in exhibition play pre-season.  We knew we were in for a tough game, but definitely showed up to play this game!  Brittney Savard opened the scoring at the end of the first period unassisted.  Jessie Vissia scored a beauty goal in the beginning of the second period assisted by Jessica Savard and Tia Anderson, and then Shayla Frechette got the winning goal just 2 minutes into the third period again assisted by Jessica Savard.  The final score in this game was 3 – 2 for Fusion and Sophie Vanderlee got the MVP.

In their third game of the day, the Fusion faced the host team, Kerry Park.  It was a great game to watch as the girls all really came together and pulled off another win!  Mariah Westra got the only goal on the first period with an assist by Jessie Vissia.  Then she got another one in the second period assisted by Brittney Savard.  Then Brittney got one unassisted.  Jessie Vissia finished the second period with a goal assisted by Mariah Westra.  Faith Lariviere opened the scoring in the third period with a goal from Danika Bratt and Sophie Vanderlee.  Then Brittney Savard scored two more goals assisted by Kaitlyn Heck and Jessica Savard, making another hatrick for Brittney!  MVP was Mariah Westra.

In the semi final game on Monday, the Fusion faced Comox again to fight for a spot in the gold medal game.  Fusion ran into penalty trouble and just couldn’t hold off the strength of the Comox team.  Mariah Westra scored the only goal for the Fusion in the end of the first period assisted by Jessie Vissia.  Comox won the game 5 – 1 to move on to the gold medal game.  But the Fusion were still in the running for the Bronze medal, MVP for this game was Whitnie Senger.

The Bronze medal game was over the top exciting!  The Fusion faced Nanaimo again, and it was back and forth for the first period with Nanaimo opening the scoring, but Mariah Westra came back and scored 20 seconds later assisted by Whitnie Senger.  Nanaimo came back and scored a minute later, but Jessie Vissia got us back in the game 2 minutes after that.  The only goal in the second period and the tying goal was scored by Jessica Savard, assisted by Whitnie Senger.  Nanaimo went ahead again at the beginning of the third period, but Whitnie Senger shot a beauty from the blue line assisted by Mariah Westra to tie it up again.  Then with 5 minutes left in the game Mariah Westra scored the winning goal assisted by Whitnie Senger.  Nanaimo tried with all their might to tie it up, and with a 2 man advantage, pulled their goalie and it was 6 on 3 for almost the whole final 2 minutes of the game, but the Fusion pulled it together and fought hard, ending up with the win 5 – 4 and the Bronze medal!!  MVP for this game was Shayla Frechette.

This was a wonderful experience for all the girls and they really pulled together this weekend.  The parents, and coaches are all very proud of how the girls handled themselves and how they represented Port Alberni very well this weekend.  It is only the start for these girls, expect to hear more about the Alberni Valley Midget Fusion in the coming season!

Team Canada West takes Silver, Van Isle Ford Midget Bulldogs in Finals today

Tough loss for Team Canada West as they fell 6-3 to the USA in the Gold Medal Game at the World Junior "A" Challenge. I didn't get to see all of the game as I was out and about with my little guy, but I did get the start of the game at Boston Pizza, and later on the beginning of the second as Canada scored three straight to lead 3-2 before the US squad tied it up and eventually went ahead.

Evan Tironese from what I saw played very well and had numerous chances to score. I didn't get to watch the game as close as I wanted, but it seemed that goals were too easy to come by for Team USA.

Congrats on the Silver medal - it's not the colour we are inclined to expect or accept in this sport in this country, but it's a great accomplishment!

The Van Isle Ford Midget Rep Bulldogs have a chance to win their own tournament today as they take on Aldergrove at 11:45 in the big rink...GO BULLDOGS!

They topped Victoria 5-1 in the semis to advance while Aldergrove beat Port Coquitlam 6-4 in the other semi.

The bronze medal game gets going at 11:30 on the Couslson side.

The Van Isle Ford Midget Rep Bulldogs finished 1st in Pool "A". Big showdown today at 2:15. If nap time for Mr. Griffin cooperates I will be there to cheer then on, and I hope to see you there too !

Gorgeous morning here in Powell River!

It's the third straight meeting between the teams in this mini series, after the Dogs "stayed alive" by digging out of a three-goal hole in the first period. Now it's Game 3, or Game 7 if you look at it that way.

Or it's just a game in November that is worth a couple of points and nothing more.

A Pittance of Time is my favorite Remembrance Day message....please take the time to remember tomorrow. It's a pittance of time.





On November 11, 1999 Terry Kelly was in a Shoppers Drug Mart store in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. At 10:55 AM an announcement came over the store's PA asking customers who would still be on the premises at 11:00 AM to give two minutes of silence in respect to the veterans who have sacrificed so much for us.

Terry was impressed with the store's leadership role in adopting the Legion's "two minutes of silence" initiative. He felt that the store's contribution of educating the public to the importance of remembering was commendable.

When eleven o'clock arrived on that day, an announcement was again made asking for the "two minutes of silence" to commence. All customers, with the exception of a man who was accompanied by his young child, showed their respect.

Terry's anger towards the father for trying to engage the store's clerk in conversation and for setting a bad example for his child was later channeled into a beautiful piece of work called, "A Pittance of Time". Terry later recorded "A Pittance of Time" and included it on his full-length music CD, "The Power of the Dream".

Quite the gutsy effort as the Dogs started the game well but fell into a 3-0 hole in the first period. Tonight marks the first time the Dogs have come back to win a game when trailing after 40 minutes.

I want to call Dylan Haugen the hero as he scored the game winner, but that leaves Brad Rebagliati out - huge effort entering the game in relief, pitching a shutout, turning aside 17 shots in the third...so lets give that title to both guys, and the rest of the team.

Dogs visit Kings, Canada West in Semis at WJAC, Midget Bulldogs Tourney

It's off to Powell River for two, tonight and tomorrow (NOTE 5pm start tomorrow) - so here's two of the former vantage points I have called games from in Powell River...the top picture is from 2005-2006, the bottom from 2009-2010. That's Bruce and I up on the camera stand, right when he first started doing colour. The climb was scary, the view was unreal though!

It's the second of three in a row between these two teams as the Bulldogs (8-9-0-3, 4th Island) get on the bus this morning to catch the boat over to Powell River to face the Kings (9-11-0-2, 3rd Island) in a battle for third place in the Division. The Kings 4-2 win at the Pound on Sunday vaulted them past the Dogs into third place, a point up, with the Dogs holding two games in hand. The Kings have won 2 of 3 this season, all three at on Dog Pound ice.

Canada West 4 Russia 3 in OT, Midget tourney this weekend!

Big win for Canada at the WJAC yesterday 4-3 over Russia in OT, which gives them a bye to semis tomorrow.

I watched most of the first and second periods online on Fasthockey.com and I was quite impressed with the chances Evan Tironese and his line was getting. I wasn't surprised at all to see that Evan picked up an assist on a big goal in the third period. Way to go Tiro and Team Canada West - KEEP IT UP!

Back at blogging today...apologies for the last couple of down days, I have been pretty sick since about last Thursday...I blame the trick or treating out in the rain! Anyway, I had to take a day off yesterday to recover and that included nothing but couch time and laying low. And of course the phone was going off all day with things I was missing!

Team Canada West got off to a roaring start at the World Junior A Challenge yesterday, downing the Czech Republic 7-0. Here's hoping Bulldogs Forward Evan Tironese hits the scoresheet today when Team West takes on Team Russia. I know it's not all about points, it's about WINS, but it would sure be nice for Evan obviously.

Bulldogs Partner With ACRD On New Recycling Program

The Alberni Valley Bulldogs and the Alberni Clayoquot Regional District are pleased to announce a new partnership to promote the 3 R's programs and encourage residents and businesses to reduce, reuse and recycle.

Bulldogs Captain Ryan Lough and teammates Lars Hepso, Tryg Strand, and Manny Gialedakis will be participating in the program. They will be discussing the 3 R's during their “Bulldogs in Schools” program and will be initiating a number of 3R's campaigns within the community.

"The Bulldogs bring to the program many great qualities, they are exceptional speakers and are seen as leaders by youth within the community. Ryan and his teammates have given some great suggestions, they are genuinely interested in the environment and making a difference within the
community", stated Andy Daniel, the Regional District's Manager of Environmental
Services.

Ryan is excited about the program and explained "we will reach out to 25 different elementary school classrooms and talk to kids about what they do within their class and their home to make a difference for the environment. We have lots of fun ideas to get them thinking about the 3 R's".

The team members will be working closely with the Regional Districts Environmental Services Coordinator, Janice Hill. The Regional District will support the players with necessary background information and training. Watch for more information and updates as the program is unveiled between now and March of 2013.

Bo Pellah named to Prospects Game

The Canadian Junior Hockey League (CJHL) and Hockey Canada announced today the team rosters for the 2012 CJHL Prospects Games on November 10th & 11th in Digby and Yarmouth, NS.

Included on the Canada West roster is Bulldogs' newest defenseman Bo Pellah. Pellah was acquired from the Langley Rivermen last week for 94 D Turner Popoff and 95 F Evan Anderson.

Pellah will be one of seven BCHL prospects to participate in the 2012 CJHL Prospect Games.




The CJHL Prospects Game was created to showcase 40 of the top NHL prospects in the CJHL. The CJHL Prospects Games feature players from the CJHL's five western leagues competing against the top prospects from the CJHL's five eastern leagues in a two-game total goal series. Player selection for the annual CJHL Prospects Games is a joint initiative of the CJHL and NHL Central Scouting.

The Alberni Valley Bulldogs would like to congratulate Bo on being named to the 2012 CJHL Prospect Game.

Dogs host Kings this afternoon...

Fresh off snapping a six game losing streak, the Dogs host the Powell River Kings - fresh of snapping a three game losing streak - today at the Dog Pound.

It's the third meeting between the teams this season, with the previous two also coming at the Dog Pound, a 4-3 OT win for the Dogs in the first meeting, a 2-0 Kings win last go around.

Both teams are somewhat short-staffed as the Kings have three players at the World Junior A Challenge. The Dogs have one at the challenge, and four defencemen injured, but enough of who's not playing!
