Dogs @ Clippers - battle for "Rival Hammer", Sendoff at the Summit 4pm today, Midget Bulldogs Update

After finally getting a home game after 9 straight on the road on Tuesday night, the Dogs are right back on the bus tonight - thankfully for just a short jaunt over the hump to the Frank Crane Arena - to face the Clippers.

The two points the Dogs picked up with their 4-3 win over the Grizzlies on Tuesday night were big ones, as the very next night the Capitals and Express BOTH won, to keep on the Dogs heels.

The Dogs hold down 6th in the Conference entering play tonight, one point up on Cowichan and three points up on Coquitlam. AND two points back of the Clippers for 5th. Yes this is a BIG ONE tonight, and not just for the big 6 foot tall Hammer that goes to the winner of the season series either, which is currently led 4-3 by the Clippers as they have won the last three head to head games.

One year after going undefeated in the regular season at the Frank Crane Arena and ending the Clippers season on their own home ice in the playoffs, the Dogs have yet to win there this season. They have certainly been in every game though, losing the last two by scores of 4-3, with the most recent meeting ending in double overtime. 

Here's hoping the boys get a boost from the "Sendoff at the Summit" planned for this afternoon. Fans are encouraged to get to the top of the hump with their signs and jerseys at 4pm to cheer the guys on as the bus rolls by on the way to Nanaimo.

The first "Sendoff at the Summit" happened at the end of the regular season in the 2005-2006 season. It resulted in the first ever regulation time, regular season win in Nanaimo for the Dogs. Here's hoping tonight's version results in the first win there this season.

Former Bulldog Joe Scali, now playing with the CHL's Laredo Bucks after a collegiate career at Cornell, will be my 2nd Intermission guest.

Marino Somerville (17), Sam Visona (13) and Tyler Wilhelm (9) demonstrate the form that helped the Van Isle Ford Midget A Bulldogs beat the older Oceanside Generals Juvenile team last weekend.  Wilhelm had two goals and assist, Visona a goal and Somerville two assists in the 9-3 win.  The team is at a tournament in Kamloops on the January 14-16 weekend.

Alberni Wrestlers compete in Victoria at Island 15 and Under

A group of wrestlers from Alberni made the trip down to Victoria early Saturday morning to compete at the Island 15 and Under, hosted by the Victoria Bulldogs.   The tournament had a number of teams coming from the Island and one from Vancouver. 


The Island 15 and Under is designed for wrestlers in grade 10 and younger to compete against each other in a variety of weight classes.  The young Alberni wrestlers preformed very well and showed once again that Port Alberni has very strong programs.   In the over-all team competition Dunn Middle school placed 3^rd in the Girls Division and 4^th in the Girls Division.  A number of Alberni’s experienced wrestlers elected to take the weekend off as they prepare for the Western Canadian Age Class in Kamloops this week.


Coming away with gold medals in the Boys Division were Russell David (51 kg Dunn), Sheldon Haddad (59 kg ADSS), Cole Walton (92 kg ADSS) and Christian Anderson (110 kg ADSS).


Earning silver in the Girls division were Bella Jones (38 kg Neill), Lauren Barker (43 kg Dunn), Bailey Durning (65 kg ADSS), Emma Vanderlee (69 kg Dunn).  Earning a Bronze in the boys division were Nolan Badovinac (73 kg Dunn) and Riley Neville (92 kg ADSS). Placing fourth in their weight classes were Kennedy O’Donovan (49 kg Girls Dunn), Isabella Larsen (53 kg Girls ADSS), and Eryk McKenzie (56 kg Boys Dunn). Rounding out the top finishers were Remi Wells (5^th at 49 kg Girls Dunn), Micaela Dick (5^th 56 kg Girls Dunn), Johannes Kulich (5^th 67 kg Boys Neill) and Michel Kurucz (6^th 56 kg Girls Dunn). 


Dunn Coach Russell Bodnar reflected on the Alberni wrestlers’ performances. “I think we wrestled well.  For the most part we brought our intermediate wrestlers to this tournament.  These boys and girls represent the future of our program.  This tournament is a great stepping stone for those wrestlers who we are grooming to be our future elite and senior wrestlers.”


On Thursday morning over fifty wrestlers and coaches from the Alberni Valley will leave for Kamloops to compete in the Western Canadian Age Class.  The tournament will feature wrestlers from BC, Alberta, and Saskatchewan.

Bantam Bulldogs Update

Rough 3 Game Run, (we need to report the good and the struggles)

Our Bantam boys lost to the Saanich Braves on Sunday 4-1, Ethan Sundstrum did get the only goal for the Bulldogs with a beautiful deek on a breakaway drive off a pass from Josh Harvey.  Tough game for the boys, no puck luck for sure and they were not getting it together very well.  Passing errors were many, and we gave up a shorthanded goal as well.  Traffic was heavy on Ryan Price who did great at batting the shots away and keeping the score were it is. 

On December 30^th our guys lost to Campbell River in their home town, and at 10-1 for Campbell River you can almost say we were schooled a bit at this game, the only score on the 30^th was from Jakob Bottaro off a pass from Nathaniel Casavant and Josh Harvey. 

The December 29^th game was played at home against Campbell River and we lost 6-3, this was a good game in spite of the score and the boys skated with equal opportunity at the net.  Brad Cowen scored the first of three, with Chase Gaudreault scoring the next two and Matt Oliver assisting on the third.  If we start counting posts we will lead the entire Bantam Division on Vancouver Island. (If Only)

We have the talent and heart, there is sure to be more victories, keep pushing guys let’s get it back!!!!!!

Dogs host Grizzlies, Times Colonist story....UPDATE

FINALLY. 

Yes, finally, the Dogs get to play a home game again. After 9 straight on the road - minus the Malmo game - the Dogs are back on their home ice at the Dog Pound to host the Grizzlies tonight.

The Dogs get TWO, yes TWO games at home this week, and they also visit the Clippers on Friday night. Click to read my latest "Weekly Preview" article on the Bulldogs website HERE

The Dogs will have new additions Mike Puddifant (who will wear sweater #4) and Dylan Nowakowski(who will wear sweater #29) in the line up tonight.

Nowakowski will be my 1st Intermission guest while Nanaimo Clippers play-by-play voice Dan Marshall will join me in the 2nd Intermission.

Dogs acquire Puddifant, Nowakowski, move Renz, Lynott

The Alberni Valley Bulldogs have acquired the playing rights of 91 D Mike Puddifant (left) and 91 F Dylan Nowakowski (right) from the Prince George Spruce Kings for the playing rights of 93 D Ryan Renz.

Puddifant played last for the Nanaimo Clippers where he tallied 2 goals and 6 assists in 15 games. The 4 year veteran was moved to Prince George previously this season.




“Mike will add experience and little bit of an edge to our backend, “states GM/Head Coach Paul Esdale.
The other player coming to the Bulldogs is Dylan Nowakowski. Nowakowski comes via the Victoria Grizzlies in a previous deal Prince George completed earlier today. Nowakowski posted 12 goals, 21 assists for 33 points in 60 games last season. This season the speedy forward has 4 goals, 3 assists for 7 points in 15 games.


“Dylan was one of Victoria’s top players last season. Dylan will be counted on to contribute in all situations for us,” comments Esdale. “We are very excited about both of these players coming to the Alberni Valley,” adds Esdale.




Look for both of the new additions to be in the lineup Tuesday night when the Bulldogs host the Victoria Grizzlies at the Weyerhauser Arena at 7:00pm.

Dogs 2 Mills 2

The Dogs snapped their losing streak at five, but they are now winless in six after a 2-2 tie with the Millionaires in Quesnel.

Quesnel took a 1-0 lead on a tip in on their second straight powerplay to open the game in the first. Colton Sobchak tied it at 1-1 as he picked off a pass up the middle and walked in on Bryton Udy and beat him glove side. It would be 2-1 Dogs late in the period when Sobchak scored his second of the game on a set up by Sam Mitchell and Casey Bailey as he ripped a one-timer home from the high slot.

The Millionaires tied it at 2-2 with the only goal of the second just over three minutes in as Frank Slubowski made the first two saves but didn't get any help and the third chance was knocked home.

That would do it for the scoring as neither team found the net through the remainder of the second period, third period, or the 1st or 2nd overtime as each team had their chances in OT but no one could find the net.

One night after having an awful call go against them in Prince George to give the Kings a penalty shot to win the game the Dogs had a no call go against them tonight in Quesnel as Tanner Hicks took a blow to the head in double OT that went uncalled. So much for the crackdown on hits such as this.

The hit would open a considerable gash on Hicks' head. As I type this we are awaiting a Doctor to arrive at the Hospital in Quesnel to close the gash. The Dogs had hoped to make the first Ferry home, but that is up in the air now.

No further update on Hicks is available.

The Dogs out shot the Mills 29-28 and went 0 for 1 on the powerplay while the Mills went 1 for 4.

The point is a big one for the Dogs, as they are a point up now on the Cowichan Valley Capitals for 6th in the Conference, and 3 points up on the Coquitlam Express who are on the outside of the playoff picture and looking in after a 6-5 loss at home to Nanaimo.

Next up is "Around the Pound" tomorrow night on 93.3 The Peak FM from 6pm to 7pm. The BCHL trade deadline is also 6pm tomorrow so it could be an interesting show.

The Dogs are finally done a franchise record 9 straight games away from home as they host Victoria on Tuesday.

Rookie winger David Dziurzynski, who notched his first professional goal a night earlier, scored twice more on Sunday to lead surging Binghamton to a 5-3 road victory over Providence on Sunday afternoon at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center.

The Senators earned their third win in as many days, and the three-game winning streak marks their longest of the entire season. At 19-16-2-2, Binghamton moved within four points of Hershey for fourth place in the East Division.

The 21-year-old Dziurzynski entered Saturday night with zero goals in 33 games this season before getting on the board in Binghamton’s 2-1 win over Syracuse. On Sunday, he scored midway through the second period and then notched the eventual game-winner with under two minutes left in the stanza.

Corey Locke and defenseman Andre Benoit each posted a goal and an assist for the Senators; Ryan Keller rounded out Binghamton’s offense; and Jim O’Brien and Kaspars Daugavins each contributed a pair of helpers.

B-Sens goaltender Robin Lehner, who has been on a yo-yo between Binghamton and parent-club Ottawa of late, made 26 saves and improved to 4-5-1 in 11 AHL appearances on the season.

Rookie forward Jordan Caron paced the Bruins with two goals and an assist, and first-year defenseman Colby Cohen recorded a goal and a helper for his first points in a Providence uniform.

The Bruins’ three-game points streak (2-0-1-0) came to an end.

The fire at the hotel was in the Boiler Room, which was next door to the Bulldogs Equipment room.


Good job done by the Quesnel Fire Department to keep the problem contained to the boiler room.


It makes me wonder what else can happen to the Dogs this season. Its just some more adversity for the players to deal with, as they were evacuated from their hotel just as they were lying down for their pregame naps.

Dogs @ Mills 5pm start, Armada Girls win Totem

The Bulldogs finish off this arduous road trip tonight in Quesnel when they face the Millionaires for a 5pm start time as they try to snap a season high five game losing streak.

The Dogs are able to see the light at the end of the tunnel that has been a franchise RECORD nine - thats right NINE straight games on the road. So far, the Dogs have put up a record of 2-5-0-1.

In an odd quirk, both of these teams are coming off of 5-4 double OT losses in Prince George, as the Mills had last night off after losing there on Friday night.

These teams last met on November 19th, a 3-0 Bulldog win at the Dog Pound.

The biggest factor in Quesnel might be the ice surface - or the consistency of the Dogs effort - as the "Vault" at the Quesnel Twin Rinks is smaller than regulation, and things happen very fast out there.

The Dogs make way for the Ferry after the game, hoping to arrive shortly before the first boat of the day to make it back to the Island.

Tomorrow night we are on the air from 6pm to 7pm from Peak Studios for "Around the Pound" as the Bulldogs Talk Show is back on the air after the holiday break just as the Trade Dealine passes.

Big congrats goes out to the ADSS Senior Girls Armada squad, who beat Ballenas in the final of Totem '56 by a score of 46-38, avenging a loss by the ADSS boys to Ballenas in their final.

Spruce Kings 5 Bulldogs 4, double OT

The Dogs got off to a great start in this one, taking a 2-0 lead by the 12 minute mark of the first on goals by Casey Bailey - on the PP, and Liam Darragh, shorthanded.

The Spruce Kings got on the board minutes later on the powerplay as the Dogs were handed consecutive penalties to make it 2-1 after one.

The 2-0 lead might have been a bad thing, as the Dogs appeared to relax, while the Spruce Kings just kept working.

They would get rewarded with two goals 14 seconds apart 8 minutes into the second to lead 3-2 as the Dogs called time out to try and right the ship. Its beyond me how the players still think that they are capable of taking their foot off the gas and they can still control the game, as there has been so many examples of losses this season where they did just that and got burned.

Maybe they thought that as the Spruce Kings are the leagues worst team, they could pull it back a little. It certainly wasn't the case, as the Spruce Kings led 3-2 after two on the benefit of good old fashioned hard work.

The Dogs got back to just that in the third period. After a slow start to the frame, they got back to the basics - taking the body and getting the puck on net. They would be rewarded for their efforts with a powerplay chance that proved huge as Colton Sobchak fired a Trent Dorais centering pass home to make it 3-3 with 6 minutes to go.

The Spruce Kings would go up 4-3 with 4:44 to play on a penalty shot generated on a breakaway that looked offside by a considerable margain - thems the breaks I guess.

If there is one thing the Dogs never do, its quit. Undaunted by the goal they kept at it, tying the game at 4-4 with less than two minutes to play when Brandon Adams fired a rebound home at the side of the net after great efforts to win battles by his linemates, Liam Darragh and Sawyer Mick.

The game would head to overtime, with each team having great chances to win it through the first OT and into double OT.

The game would be decided on an awful penalty call in double OT, from an official working his second straight game in PG - I always have a problem with that - as Connor Varley would get called for highsticking at centre ice, resulting in the game winning penalty shot with less than a minute to go in double OT.

To describe the penalty - Connor Varley chips the puck past a Spruce King at neutral ice. Varley is beating the Spruce King up the boards when the player INTERFERES with him, as he trys to get to the puck to create a 2 on 1. As a consequence of Varley attempting to fight through the uncalled interference, he gets his stick up and clips the Spruce King.

I can add a whole bunch of adgetives to describe the penalty call, and quite frankly, I want to, but I'll just stick with the facts and leave it at "awful"

In the end, it should have never got to that point, but credit to the Spruce Kings for the win - their first in 21 games over someone not named Quesnel.

The Dogs try to salvage their roadtrip when they visit the Millionaires in Quesnel tomorrow. The pregame show kicks off at 4:45 on 93.3 The Peak.

Dogs @ Spruce Kings tonight

The Bulldogs are back in action tonight in Prince George after being idle for the last two days on the road. After the 4-3 loss in Surrey Wednesday the Bulldogs used Thursday as a travel day to head up to Quesnel. Yesterday was a practice/video/individual meetings day in Quesnel, so the team has kept busy.

Tonight marks the second meeting of the season between the Dogs and Spruce Kings, after a 5-4 win for the AVB at the Dog Pound on October 9th. Fans may remember that night, as it was the game where a HUGE Salmon was thrown onto the ice to celebrate Port Alberni just being named the Ultimate Fishing Town of Canada.

The Spruce Kings most likely remember it, not for the fish, but for the fact that they were down 5-2 with three minutes to go when said fish made it's flight. When the dust settled it was a 5-4 Dogs final after two late ones for the Spruce Kings.

Eagles 4 Dogs 3

Another heartbreaker for the Dogs tonight as they battled back from a 4-2 deficit after two periods to make it 4-3, but that's as close as they would get as a Casey Bailey shot late in the game rang off the bar and stayed out.


The Dogs scored first for the second straight game as Colton Sobchak fired a rebound home off a Connor Varley shot that was set up by Trent Dorais. The Eagles tied it late in the period on a perfect powerplay set up for Linden Saip, who scored in his Eagles debut. Less than a minute later the Eagles struck on an odd-man rush to lead 2-1 after one.


Another powerplay goal by Sam Mitchell made it 2-2 in the second, but the Eagles again took the lead on a seeing eye wrist shot from the point to make it 3-2. The Eagles made it 4-2 later in the period on a beauty by Robert Lindores, as he beat a Bulldog defender in front and then put a backhand far side past Slubowski.


The Dogs didn't quit, no surprise there, as Brandon Adams put a slap shot from the high slot off the post and in on the powerplay to make it 4-3. The Dogs would keep up the attack in the third, having countless chances on the scramble but they couldn't find the equalizer. The Dogs got more chances as the Eagles got in penalty trouble with a minor and a double minor but the Dogs again had tough luck as they were unable to find the net on several glorious chances. One final break went against the Dogs late as Casey Bailey rang a shot off the crossbar that stayed out.


Final shots favoured the Eagles 32-30.


Say what you will, but in my opinion I thought the Dogs deserved better in this one with how they played the 3rd, but I guess that's why you don't want to be playing comeback hockey.


The Dogs have a day off for travel tomorrow as they head up to Quesnel. Friday they will practice in Quesnel, before they face the Spruce Kings in Prince George Saturday.

Dogs @ Eagles, Canada vs Russia...

Catch the Bulldogs at the Eagles tonight at the South Surrey Arena on 93.3 The Peak.


Its the second meeting in 7 days between the clubs after the Eagles won the first meeting of the season last Wednesday in Richmond by a score of 4-1.


Brandon Adams is my first intermission guest while Prince George Spruce Kings voice Ron Gallo will join me after 40 minutes.


Quite the site in the Eagles Coaches Room when I arrived today - Gary Nylan's 1982 World Junior Gold Medal and Uniform. Nylan is part of the Eagles ownership group and is also an Assistant on Matt Erhart's Staff. It may sound hokey to you, but it was a special feeling to hold the medal in my hand...Right now its 3-0 Canada late in the second period..GO CANADA...and GO DOGS!

Kings 4 Dogs 2

A good effort tonight for the Dogs as they hung with the Country's best (albeit short-staffed) but their effort came up just short as the Kings hit an empty net with 5 seconds to play to seal the deal.


The Dogs started the game well, as Casey Bailey made it 1-0 on the powerplay just 1:30 in. The Kings evened it up before the game was five minutes old as Brenden Forbes knocked an end-glass bounce that had gone over Frank Slubowski's head out of mid air and into the back of the net for a powerplay goal and a 1-1 tie.


Teagan Waugh would make it 2-1 as the Dogs missed on what looked like several easy chances to clear the zone as he walked in on the breakaway. The Dogs killed off a 5 on 3 for the Kings just moments later, and then tied the game at 2-2 during 4 on 4 hockey as Tanner Hicks scored his first career goal on a great feed by Trent Dorais who out worked two Kings behind their net.


It was nice to see Hicks score the goal, as he hopefully erased bad memories of the rink in Powell River, as it was a hit from behind in the season opener against the Kings that resulted in his lacerated spleen that saw him miss considerable time.


The second period was end to end, with the Dogs in my opinion being the better team. However, one miscue is all it takes against a team as good as the Kings, and the Dogs found that out the hard way as a simple dump in ended up in the back of the Dogs net as the Kings got to the puck first and got it out front where Forbes found Mike Sones with a cross-crease pass to make it 3-2 Kings with seven minutes to play in the period.


That would be all the Kings needed, as they held the lead until Teagan Waugh put his second of the game into an empty net with 5 seconds to go for the 4-2 final.


The Dogs went 1 for 6 on the powerplay while the Kings went 1 for 4. Shots favoured the Kings 39-23.


Next up for the Dogs - another good test as they visit the Eagles tomorrow night in Surrey.

Dogs hit road for the week, open trip in Powell River tonight

The Dogs hit the road this morning and avoided the snow in Port Alberni as they headed up Island to get over to Powell River.

I apologize for not posting earlier...we had an earlier than expected departure this morning and it left me without enough time to get something up on the blog.

Praying to Mother Nature....Give us the Winter Classic 2011, Happy New Year, 'Dogs host Malmo, Sweden Redhawks tomorrow!

I think the weather change that has resulted in the Winter Classic faceoff being moved to 5pm PST and 8:00pmEST is a huge blessing.... or a blessing as long as the weather does what it is supposed to do, and we DO indeed get to watch this amazing game tonight.

Sid and Ovie under the lights? Come on! The best place for the most informative and humorous updates is always Greg Wyshynski's Puck Daddy Blog If anything it's worth viewing just to see a picture of Pens forward Pascal Dupuis skating around in a Steelers helmet.

It has been a fun day watching 3 of the 4 previous WC games - Pens at Sabres, Wings at Hawks, and Philly at Boston. 

As I type this, now it's Wayne Gretzky golfing. He shoots LEFT in hockey, and RIGHT in golf. My theory is he was way to good at hockey right handed, so he switched to leftie to make it more fair. As golf is his second sport, he must be right handed right haha!  In the end, I know it's all just about Wayne having incredible athletic abilities.

Happy New Year - I hope everyone had a great time with friends and loved ones ringing in 2011!

The Bulldogs open the year with an Exhibition tilt tomorrow against the Malmo Redhawks at the Dog Pound, a 5pm puck drop. The Bulldogs office is open selling tickets from 10am tomorrow to game time.
