The Dogs try to snap a four game losing streak as they visit the Coquitlam Express this afternoon for the first meeting of the season between the teams.
It's the first meeting in Coquitlam between the teams since the Epxress moved to Burnaby for the 2005-2006 season.
The Express entered play this week losers of 8 in a row. What a difference a couple of games makes - you sure don't have to tell the Bulldogs about that - as the Express are now winners of two straight as they beat Nanaimo on Wednesday and Langley on Friday night. They will be well rested, having last night off. The Dogs will be fatigued, playing their third game in two and a half days, and their fourth in just five days.
It will take a monumental effort for the Dogs to come out of this one with two points, so lets hope they can find the gas to bring it for 60 minutes. Consistency has been the biggest factor in this four game streak, and this is the biggest test yet of the season to try and play a consistent game. This one is a challenge to say the least. Maybe it's what this team needs though? One can only hope.

The Dogs suffered their fourth straight defeat tonight as they fell 4-2 to the Chiefs in front of a good crowd of over 2800 at the Langley Event Centre.
As has been the case lately, the Dogs best period was the 3rd, but again as has been the case lately their comeback attempt was too little too late as the Chiefs scored into an open net to seal the deal in the final minute.
Trent Dorais(shorthanded) and Brandon Adams had the Dogs goals.
The Dogs road trip finishes tomorrow as the Dogs visit the Express at the Coquitlam Sports Centre for a 2pm start on 93.3 The Peak FM and www.933thepeak.com

A much better effort for the Dogs, unfortunately it came against a much better opponent (with no disrespect intended to Cowichan) and ended up in their third straight loss.
Frank Slubowski was the player of the game as he came up with big saves to keep the Dogs in it.
The Kings opened the scoring when they took a 1-0 lead with seven minutes left in the second period on a Scott Renner tally.
It was 2-0 with eleven minutes to go in the third on a Carter Shinkaruk goal and it looked like it was over at that point. Big credit to the Dogs as they made a game of it when Casey Bailey scored to make it 2-1 with eight minutes and change to play in the third, but that would be as close as the Dogs would get.
The power play was a let down tonight, as not only did they not score, but they did little to generate chances and momentum. Credit to the leagues #1 penalty kill for being just that, but at the same time the Dogs weren't urgent enough.
Next up, a two-ferry trip to the Lower Mainland for a meeting with the Langley Chiefs, pregame 6:45 tomorrow on 93.3 The Peak.

A tall test for the Dogs in the #1 team in the Conference and in the entire BCHL. One thing is for certain, the Dogs will have to play better, and more consistently, than they have over their last 2 games if they hope to snap their 2 game losing streak and the Kings 5 game winning streak.
These teams last met in late September at the Dog Pound, where the Dogs picked up a 3-1 win. Last game in Powell River was opening night of the season, a 3-0 Kings win.

The first tournament to be held in the new Athletic Hall starts today, with the official opening ceremonies going tonight after 6:00pm for the Lem Wong Invitational. The official opening of the Hall is next weekend.

The Dogs have lost two straight now after a third period comeback bid came up short to the Caps tonight for the first win for the Capitals over the Bulldogs since the 2008-2009 season.
The Caps played a smart game as the capitalized on limited chances and got a great performance in net from Brandon Glover, the games first star, who looks like he will be a solid addition to the Caps line up.
The Bulldogs were flat for the first two periods, with their only goal of the game coming from Connor Varley on a first period powerplay.
Just past the halfway mark of the game Mike Hammond tied it up for the Caps, and with less than three to play in the frame Jordan Grant made it 2-1.
The only shot for the Capitals in the third period ended up in the empty net to seal the deal for the 3-1 final.
The Dogs will need to play MUCH better in Powell River Friday if they hope for a better fate, and that's an understatement.

It's Remembrance Day tomorrow - or Veterans Day for our American blog readers. Don't forget those who gave their lives, so we can do fun things like play hockey, watch hockey, blog about hockey, or just plain have the freedom to do whatever we want.
Poppy Facts
During the Napoleonic Wars, the poppy drew attention as the mysterious flower that bloomed over the graves of fallen soldiers.
In the 20th Century, the poppy again was widely noticed after soils in France and Belgium became rich in lime from rubble during the First World War. The little red flowers flourished around the graves of the war dead as they had 100 years earlier.
In 1915, Guelph, Ontario native John McCrae, a doctor serving with the Canadian Forces Artillery, recorded this phenomenon in his famous poem In Flanders Fields.
Two days before the Armistice, Moina Michael, an American woman from Athens, Georgia, read the McCrae poem and was inspired to wear a poppy year-round in memory of the war dead.
Today, the Poppy Campaign is one of the Royal Canadian Legion's most important programs. The money raised from poppy sales provides direct assistance for ex-service people in financial distress, as well as funding for medical appliances and research, home services, care facilities, and numerous other purposes.
One of my favorite Remembrance Day Messages comes from this song and video by Canadian Artist Terry Kelly. Here's the story behind the song, "A Pittance of Time"
On November 11, 1999 Terry Kelly was in a drug store in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. At 10:55 AM an announcement came over the stores PA asking customers who would still be on the premises at 11:00 AM to give two minutes of silence in respect to the veterans who have sacrificed so much for us.
Terry was impressed with the stores leadership role in adopting the Legions two minutes of silence initiative. He felt that the stores contribution of educating the public to the importance of remembering was commendable.
When eleven oclock arrived on that day, an announcement was again made asking for the two minutes of silence to commence. All customers, with the exception of a man who was accompanied by his young child, showed their respect.
Terrys anger towards the father for trying to engage the stores clerk in conversation and for setting a bad example for his child was channeled into a beautiful piece of work called, A Pittance of Time. Terry later recorded A Pittance of Time and included it on his full-length music CD, The Power of the Dream.

STEINER’S OVERTIME WINNER GIVES SWISS OPENING-GAME WIN
PENTICTON, B.C. – Nicholas Steiner scored the game-winner on a power play 1:45 into overtime as Switzerland made its World Junior A Challenge debut a memorable one, earning a 5-4 victory over Canada West on Monday night.
The Swiss took advantage of a delay of game penalty against Canada West’s Dylan Walchuk with just 9.8 remaining in regulation time to earn the victory in front of more than 2,200 pro-Canadian fans at the South Okanagan Events Centre.
Trailing 3-0 entering the third period, Canada West mounted a furious comeback in the final 20 minutes, erasing a 4-2 deficit with 12 minutes to go. Penticton native Mark MacMillan, playing in front of family and friends, scored twice in the third as Canada West rallied to earn a single point.
Winnipeg-born Swiss forward Ryan McGregor got the scoring party started with just over six minutes to go in the first period, beating Canada West goaltender Matthew Krahn, and goals from Raphael Kuonen and Gregory Hofmann pushed that lead to three with goals 4:14 apart late in the second.
Needing a quick start in the third period, Canada West finally got on the board when Travis St. Denis pushed a rebound past Swiss goaltender Lukas Meili just 69 seconds into the frame, and MacMillan drove the net for a rebound goal of his own just over three minutes later to ignite the SOEC crowd.
But before the MacMillan goal could be announced, the Swiss restored their two-goal lead thanks to Matthias Rossi, who snuck a wrist shot from the wing under Krahn’s arm.
MacMillan’s second of the period pulled the Canadian side to within one again, and a gorgeous three-way passing play, finished off by Reed Linaker, brought the crowd to its feet and the game to even terms at 4-4.
With overtime looming, Walchuk inadvertently cleared the puck over the glass, and Steiner capitalized late in the 4-on-3 overtime power play, blasting a slow slap shot past Krahn.
The Swiss will be right back to action Tuesday when they face Russia in the late game (7:30 p.m. PT), while Canada West will have a day to regroup before taking on the Russians in Wednesday’s preliminary round finale (7:30 p.m. PT).

Moving on....a picture of the guys on the road, still hitting the books. You may not know, but when they aren't hitting the books themselves many of the players are in the community schools making a difference with the "Bulldogs in Schools" program.
We profiled the program a couple weeks back when we had Bulldogs Educational Advisor Tom McEvay on "Around the Pound" Tonight, the program will get some additional coverage as CHEK TV will air a segment tonight at 7:30. The segment was filmed at Howitt Elementary last week. Cool stuff, thanks for the heads up Tom!
Dogs dominated the bulk of the game, but not when it counted as they led 4-1 in the second, and 4-2 after two, only to see the Grizzlies take a 5-4 lead. The Dogs battled back to tie it late at 5-5 only to see the Grizzlies go ahead in the final minute to win 6-5.

A big game tonight at the Dog Pound as the Victoria Grizzlies pay a visit. The Grizz are only team to beat the Dogs twice this season and the only team to win in the Alberni Valley Multiplex this season.

Jamie Amos works his 600th Junior Hockey game tonight....check out the below picture, and the description with it. It's from January 2007, the night Jamie worked Game #400.
Assistant trainer/equipment manager Jamie Amos, with trainer Preston Charles. The 4-0-0 is to recognize Jamie's 400th game working in Junior Hockey, starting first with the Junior B. Port Alberni Bandits, and then the Bulldogs. In an odd occurrence, the game was in Langley, a rink Jamie hadn't been to since 1980 something, a rink where he also worked a hockey game for the first time, as a penalty box attendant. Jamie said that back then the penalty boxes had no glass in Langley. Congrats to Jamie and thanks for all that you do for the team! They couldn't do it without you!

A big win for the Dogs, an odd game at times as the momentum swings were big ones. The Bulldogs came out crashing and banging, taking a 1-0 lead five minutes in. Then the Clippers control the play for the bulk of the remainder of the first period. Late in the frame the Dogs looked to go up 2-0 but Charles Andre Pelletier made the save of the year on Colton Sobchak, snaring the puck out of mid air to rob him of a goal on a wide open net. Everyone in the rink was fooled, including the goal judge and the horn-sounder but the referee ruled no goal.
Another power play goal to open the second (the Dogs went 2 for 2 on the power play on the night) just two minutes in saw the Dogs take a 2-0 lead. The Dogs played one of their best periods of the season in the middle frame, throwing 20 shots at the Clipper net and looking to have sure goals on several scrambles but they couldn't bury one. The Clippers got a late period goal to set up what would be a tight third period with the Dogs leading 2-1. The Dogs would get in penalty trouble and it would cost them in the end as they were given the last three minors of the game, including two in the final 10 minutes of the third, the final one coming with 2:10 left. Ryan Stanimir would score his second of the game on a wrap around banker with the net empty making it a 6 on 4 situation to tie the game and force overtime with just over a minute to play in regulation.
Overtime was as cautious as the third period, with the first OT seeing just one shot, a long distance wrister by Mike Domsodi. Double OT had more action, with the Dogs leading the shots 4-0. They would find the winner after a heart and soul shift for the ages by Trent Dorais as his relentless-bulldogged-never-say-die pursuit of the puck saw him get it back several times when it looked like he was a step behind.
THAT'S why he wears the C.
He would then race over the line and find Josh Mitchell with a perfect pass as he was driving the net.
And how about the patience shown by Josh Mitchell on the OT winner?
Time to toot my own horn. I called Josh to score the winner in our "overtime picks" contest....Eat your hearts out Dan and Rick! Click HERE to listen. I picked third by the way - Rick and Dan went before me! Ha!
The win came with a price as the Dogs lost Frank Riddle to injury again. So far this season, it's been beyond tough for Frank. I keep saying it - better that it happens now than in March. Frank has a great attitude, I hope he can keep it that way through another layoff.
Gain one lose two?
The Dogs got Ryan Renz back for the first time in over a month, and he certainly made an IMPACT in more ways than one. While they gained Renz the Dogs might have lost Kyle Weber ALONG with Frank Riddle.
The Dogs haven't had a healthy D core since four minutes into the season, before Riddle was head-shotted out of the lineup by Powell River's Scott Renner. It's been a short-staffed crew since.
Don't forget to bring a non-perishable food item to the game on Saturday, to support SHAW's efforts to fill the foodbank with their "together is amazing" campaign

VAN ISLE BULLDOGS VANQUISH VICTORIA
The Van Isle Ford Bulldogs split their first two Division 1 League games last weekend, dropping 7-1 to Comox in an away game on Saturday and rolling over Victoria Racquet Club Kings 9-1 at home on Sunday.
In Comox the teams reversed fortunes from their last meeting (when Alberni Valley shocked the visitors 6-2). This time on home ice Comox was ready. A few defensive errors and a lot of penalties kept the Dogs down. Only Colby Lim was able to find the twine for a lone goal late in the second period.
The loss set up a perfect storm to host Victoria Racquet Club (VRC) on Halloween. The Bulldogs were determined to redeem the previous day loss as well as the game that got away in Victoria. They gave up a goal to the visitors before getting down to business late in the first period. The Bulldogs converted their first power play opportunity at 7:58 with precise passing from Brady Janzen to Carson McCulloch to Lim and in. A minute later Sam Visona took a lead pass from Ryan White, split the VRC defence at the blue line and then beat the goalie glove side for the go ahead goal. Insurance was added at the 3 minute mark when Tyler Wilhelm dropped the puck to Bryan Read at the right point to laser through traffic and make it 3-1. With assists from Visona and Colin Mowat, Corey Beecroft did the same from the left side 20 seconds later. Janzen jammed in a rebound off a Wilhelm shot to end the period up 5-1.
Alberni continued to out skate, out pass and out hit Victoria to control play as the game went on. Lim and Janzen delivered the puck for Wilhelm to put a back hand through 5-hole at 7:07 of the second period. The same line combined again at 5:05. This time Wilhelm pulled in a rebound off Lim’s shot and put it in high on the short side.
Nolan Jarvis scored to open the 3rd period and make it 8-1 with McCulloch and Dustin Diemert assisting. Diemert tipped in the final goal of the game to finish at 9-1. McCulloch and Beau Wilson picked up assists.
The Midget A Bulldogs have a new sponsor this year in Van Isle Ford. They will be in action for two home games next weekend at Weyerhaeuser Arena. Come and see them versus Juan de Fuca Grizzlies Saturday November 6th at 3 PM and versus Nanaimo Clippers Sunday November 7th at 12:30 PM.
Captain Kirk McLean is the next 'Nuck to go into the ring of honour. Good call! Gotta love Captain Kirk. Gotta love him even more after you get to meet him, and you realize he's a great guy. I was lucky enough to meet him and tip back a couple pints a couple years back at the Alberni Valley Charity Golf Classic.
He was a true nice guy, down to earth, a true "beauty" if you will. He even did some fake drumming in the dark of night on the putting green after someone brought out some bagpipes from their golf locker and fired them up, a classic story for sure.
For those that watched Warren during his time in a Bulldog sweater, none of what you will read below will be surprising! Congrats Muirsie!
CALGARY (October 30, 2010) --
It must be downright spooky for Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) opposition. It's Halloween weekend, which means we're a full four weeks into the season, and keeping pace among the lamplighting leaders for the SAIT Trojans is none other than . . . Warren Muir.
The unheralded Muir (1st-year forward, Nanaimo, B.C., academic upgrading, BCHL Alberni Valley), who made the four-time defending ACAC men's hockey champions as a penalty killer and defensive forward, now has five goals in eight games. Muir scored the winner in the Trojans' 4-1 victory over the NAIT Ooks on Saturday night at the SAIT Arena, and is third on the Men of Troy roster in goals, behind Ryan Hyland's eight and Mike Ullrich's six.
Did he expect to be showing off his offensive wares in SAIT red and white?
"Well, yes and no. Last year, I had 16 goals in 40-something games, so I can put the puck in the net," said Muir, who broke a 1-1 tie at the 3:30 mark of the third period by firing home a rebound from the slot. "It's just a matter of doing it."
Muir played the right wing Saturday night on a line with Robert Nocera (2nd-year forward, Calgary, hospitality management, AJHL Drumheller) and Graham Dearle (1st-year forward, Calgary, petroleum engineering, CHL Oklahoma City), a trio that was thrown together on Friday night during the Trojans' 4-0 win over the Ooks in Edmonton. "I'm definitely being put in a position to score some goals," added Muir. "Nocera's really fast, and Dearle can see the ice really well. He's set me up a few times, so it's great playing with those guys."
The Trojans, aiming to become the first squad in history to claim five straight ACAC titles, solidify their position at the top of the eight-team heap with a 6-1-1 record. The Ooks fall to 3-4-1.
"Warren has been a good addition to the team. For a young fellow, I think he's come along really quickly early," said veteran SAIT head coach Ken Babey. "He's got good speed, he's very coachable, he's an intelligent player, and I think he's going to get better every weekend.
"He's going to be a strong player throughout the season."
Defenceman Brad Plumton (2nd year, Calgary, business administration, BCHL Westside) tallied a goal and two assists for the Trojans. Ullrich (3rd year, Banff, Alta., hospitality management, BCHL Vernon) and Brennan Strang (2nd-year forward, Saskatoon, electrical engineering, BCHL Surrey) also lit the lamp for SAIT. Max McCloy replied for the Ooks.
Tommy Tartaglione (2nd year, Harbor City, Calif., new media production and design, WHL Prince George) turned aside 24 of 25 NAIT shots, while Ooks counterpart Graeme Harrington was tested often, stopping 34 of 38 pucks.
Saturday's contest had a chippy aspect to it, with kneeing, checking-from-behind, butt-ending and fighting penalties doled out . . . not exactly a surprise, given that SAIT and NAIT are heated rivals going back decades. "That's historic," said Babey. "They had three hits from behind over two games (this weekend), and (Friday) night ended chippy. I thought they were dirty at times, and cheap, and didn't play straight-up hockey. We'll enjoy games that way, but not this way."
Saturday's win saw the Trojans pull a close one out of the fire for the second straight night. On Friday, SAIT had led 1-0 after 40 minutes before finding the twine three times in the third period. "I thought their goalie Harrington was outstanding both games, and we finally got something by him," said Babey. "Tommy played a good game for us too. I thought that by the third period, we were able to establish our game a bit."
Added Babey with a grin: "I don't think they wanted to come to a Monday-morning practice at 6:30, like they had to do last week (after one point of a possible four at Portage College). As soon as I said, 'See you Tuesday,' there was a big cheer."

Ethan Sundstrum is back in the lineup after the collar bone incident and it has not slowed him down a bit with a 3 point game on Saturday, 1 goal 2 assists, Jacob Battaro also had a 3 point game with 1 goal 2 assists, Brad Cowan with 2 goals, Chase Gaudreault with 2 goals, Nathaniel Casavant with 1 goal, 1 assist, Matt Oliver with 1 goal 1 assist, Cam Blake with 2 assists, Gary Martin with one assist, Josh Harvey with 1 assist, and Tristan McLeod with 1 assist.
The Bulldogs did lose game two against the Oceanside Generals in Oceanside 6-3, it was a good high energy game with many chances at the net, but of course the score clock will not reflect close calls. Focus on D
Not only are the “D” on the score clock there was some nice heads up puck control coupled with some hip checks that were text book perfect.
The spectators comments are unanimous, there are some exciting things happening with the Bulldogs defense. We are seeing great penalty kills with the excellent clearing and puck control of Matt Irg and Kegan Sylva, and a steady feed from the forwards to take advantage of deadly and intimidating shots from Gary Martin and Josh Harvey, we must mention the great presence and hard hitting of Cam Blake greeting the opposing forwards with hockey hello. Ryan Price minded the net this weekend with Jessie Geddes standing by.

The Bulldogs have a lot of skill and variety on the team and we are seeing a team on the ice with everyone contributing, look for the reach and play making skills of the tall forward Giordano Corlazzoli, the surprising speed of Jordan Lavertu, and just the overall hard work as this team continues to come together.

Yeah I'm biased, I know any 15 guys on any given week in the league could win this award...but in my humble opinion it couldn't go to a more deserving guy than Casey Bailey. Not only was he good last week, he finished the week before it with a two goal game in Penticton. He now has 8 goals in his last 4 games. An impossible pace to keep up, but I heard that last year more than enough and you may remember some guy hitting 60 plus goals in the end so you never know!
