New Derby Leader!!

There is a new biggest fish for the derby, just barely, but its bigger.


The new big fish is Jason Gudbranson's 32.7 pounder. Jason is from Ukee.

Salmon Festival Update, Bulldogs Introduced on stage today at 2:45 today, beat Caps 6-1 last night

Good Morning from a beautiful day in Port Alberni at the 39th Annual Salmon Festival! The kids right now are right behind me weighing in all of their Bullheads to try and win the big prize in the P.A. Lions Club Bullhead Derby.


No fish have been put on the leader board today. The biggest fish of the Derby so far is 32.4 pounds, caught by Shaun Hackwell of Port Alberni.


The Bulldogs will be introduced on the Salmon Fest stage at 2:45 this afternoon. If you missed it, the Dogs beat the Caps 6-1 last night at Kerry Park Arena. Find the details by reading the posts below.

Nice way to end the Exhibition season for the Dogs as with the win they raise their record to 1 and 2.

Now it's playing for REAL next Friday in Powell River.

Dogs go up 6-1 with 10:38 left in the third, on the power play, a pass from down low behind the goal line banged in again from in tight. Sawyer Mick again gets the goal, with assists to Trent Murdoch and Lars Hepso.

5-1 Dogs, 16:11 left third period

Sawyer Mick bangs in a feed from in tight on the power play to make it 5-1 Dogs, 3:49 into the third. Assists to Trent Murdoch and Tanner Hicks.

Lars Hepso picks up his second of the game 15:30 into the second to make it 4-1. Ryan Renz gets the only assist.

Ryan Renz came out of the penalty box and chased down a loose puck for a breakaway chance from a sharp angle. Renz threw a shot off the blocker of Jackson Jane, Lars Hepso drove the net and was rewarded as he banged in the rebound.

Dogs go up 3-1 as Josh Mitchell scores from Colton Sobchak and Tyler Auricchio at 1:20 into the second.

Dogs retake the lead, up 2-1 after one

Dogs take 1-0 2:41 into the game as Sam Mitchell bangs in a feed from in tight. No announcement yet on the goal.

Mike Hammond ties the game with just under four minutes to play in the first on a beautiful goal splitting the D and dangling on the deke to tuck it by Kiefer Giroux

The Bulldogs go up 2-1 with 40 seconds left in the first when Trent Murdoch finds Lars Hepso alone streaking to the net. Hepso rips it home far side high, past the blocker arm of Alex Peck.

Dogs Line Up for tonight, Gary Wulke still leads 39th Annual Port Alberni Salmon Festival

The latest update from Jolie at Clutesi is that Gary Wulke still leads the derby with his 29.5 pounder.

Dogs host Caps tonight, 39th Annual Salmon Fest Opens tonight!

Tonight is your final chance to see the Dogs on home ice until their home opener on September 17th!

The Cowichan Valley Capitals visit the Pound tonight for a 7pm puck drop...the Dogs then "visit" the Capitals tomorrow night at Kerry Park Arena. After that, it's the regular season opener a week from tonight in Powell River, followed by the home opener two weeks from tonight when the Capitals are back at the Dog Pound.

We will see you at the rink tonight. For those not making it, yes, I'll be posting updates so be sure to check back.

93.3 The Peak has you covered for Salmon Fest. As has been the case for the last 38 years, the best way to keep up to date on Salmon Fest (besides getting down there yourself) is to keep it locked to 93.3 The Peak.

We will be broadcasting live from the Salmon Fest grounds from 10am to 8pm on both Saturday and Sunday, and then from 9am to the conclusion of fishing at 3pm on Monday.

I made this slide show to commemorate the Bulldogs breaking of a 20 year old league record for consecutive road wins.

This collection of pictures from the 2009-2010 Bulldog season taken off my blog and the Bulldogs facebook page. The pictures are in chronological order, beginning with the ice going into the rink, and ending with a photo of the team bus returning to the rink from breaking the league record in Trail.

In between you'll find pictures of everything from training camp to the unveiling of the team, from the home opener to countless road trips and community events. And even a shot or two from the side of the highway at a rest stop in the middle of no where!

Dogs host Cowichan tomorrow, Salmon Fest Opening Ceremonies...

The Bulldogs are back in action tomorrow night as they play their final Exhibition Game on home ice when the Cowichan Valley Capitals. Game time is at 7:00pm. Right after the game I'm hoping to catch the Fireworks from the Salmon Festival Opening Ceremonies - they are advertised to begin at 9pm Friday.

Here's an update from the Alberni Golf Club. Thanks as always to Gerry for keeping me (and the rest of us) in the loop!

The Club Championship wrapped up a couple of weeks ago, with one of our up and coming juniors defeating all opponents to capture the title. It took Jeff Dagg 33 holes to beat runner up Damien White to win the Championship. ( Way to go Jeff ) Ron Clark emerged as the A flight winner, with Steve Pointon as the runner up. The B flight was won by Fred Gray and the runner up was Gene Kemoto. Congratulation to all those who participated and for giving us a series of great matches.A special thanks to Barlows Home Entertainment and the Alberni Valley Times for sponsoring the Chanmpionship.

In Men's Club action on Sunday, the Toronto Dominion Bank two man best ball was well attended. Club Captain Craig Acland and Keith Gauthier won 1^st low gross followed by Preban Rasmussen and Dennis Debolt, Jim Lawler and John Jones, Terry Rai and Peter Mugleston, in 5^th spot was the twosome of Jerry White and Gene Kimoto.Finally Jim Rhodes came through with a decent game as he and his partner Henry Chretien won low net, 2^nd low net was won by Jerry Swaney and Joe Baker, with 3^rd. going to Fred Fredrickson and Earl Ewart, in fourth spot it was Clint Wilson and Gerry Blender and 5^th spot went to the father son team of Vic and Kevin Carlton.

Glen Trask collected $39 for the Charity closest to the pin on No2, other closest to the pin winners were Jim Lawler on No 4, Bill Barrett on No 13, Clint Wilson on No 17 and for his second shot on No 11 it was Jacques Geovetti. The West Wind Pub long drive on No 15 was won by Keith Gauthier. Two draws for $50 each were won by Will Pullford and Art Berlinski.

In the ball sweep Keith Gauthier had the best of the day coming in with a gross 74 winning 3 balls, Jim Lawler shot 75 to take home 2 balls and Fred Fredrickson carded 76 to win 1 ball.On the net side Jim Rhodes shot 62 to win 3 balls, Clint Wilson had a 65 winning 2 balls and Peter Mugleston shot 68 taking home one ball.

Next Sunday is and open day, please book your own tee time with your own foursome starting at 7AM. The ball sweep, money pot and the Charity closest to the pin are all up for grabs. Just a reminder for every Sunday you play your name goes in that many times for cash draws on the windup day Oct 3^rd.

Staples has their final "Stock the Lockers" fund raising BBQ this Saturday from 12 noon to 4pm at their store at the Pacific Rim Shopping Centre. This is a great cause, raising funds to purchase school supplies and gym shoes and clothes for kids that are less fortunate than others.


It very much saddens me to think that there are kids out there going back to school who don't have School Supplies or Gym Clothes, so please try to find 10 minutes to get up to Staples on Saturday to grab a Burger or Dog and put some school supplies in a kid's locker!
