Bulldogs getting recognition + THE TALK SHOW RETURNS!
Look for Mitch MacMillan on "Inside the BCHL" with Bernie Pascall coming up soon on the league website.
Of course the league All-Star game goes tomorrow and the Bulldogs will be represented by a league high three players (tied with the Vees who also have 3) after Kevin Ross was a late game add yesterday.
I know I know I know - There's only one team for the rest of the league to be on...but Ross should have made the cut the first time. I know that's easier said than done though because every team has to be represented.
Ross joins Mitch MacMillan and Frank Slubowski - and of course Dogs boss Nolan Graham on team Coastal Conference.
Of course the Ross announcement came later in the day after the new CJHL rankings came out, with the Dogs rising to 11th in Canada.
A good news day yesterday for the club!

The talk show is COMING BACK, better than ever!
Debuting Monday night at 6pm on 93.3 The Peak FM is "Around the Pound, the Bulldog Hockey Show"
The show will be 1 hour in length, where the first half hour will be all Bulldogs. On the ice. Off the ice. In the community. On the road. We'll cover it all. I'll be joined by members of the Dogs Coaching staff, and Bulldog players and Alumni players.
The second half we'll go outside Port Alberni, to see what's happening around the league. More often than not we'll try to maintain a Bulldog connection to keep the listeners connected.
And yes - I welcome your interaction - send your questions in, your feedback, your guest request and show ideas to: bulldogs@933thepeak.com

Here's some neat stuff on new Bulldog Ryan Renz, sent in by Alberni Golf Club Head Pro (and sometime guest colour commentator on Bulldogs Broadcasts) Bruce MacDonald.....
He was a member on the BC U16 team that attended the Nagano Cup in Japan.... I did a little further digging - he was a teammate of former Bulldog Luke Fenske on that squad.
I'll say what the fans are probably thinking -he'll be a very solid addition to the team if he can bring what Luke brought to the Dogs.
Bruce also found a neat write up from the Kelowna Daily Courier regarding the "Canadian Hockey Skills Challenge" that stopped in 6 cities around the country and tested over 300 players.
Representing the Pursuit of Excellence Academy, Renz was the top ranked player in the COUNTRY after they added up the points earned from three fundamentals of the game - Fastest Skater, Hardest Shot, and Shot Accuracy.
Cool stuff, thanks Bruce!

Bulldogs add youth to roster with '93 D Ryan Renz and '92 F Pearce Eviston
PPRESS RELEASE
January 11, 2010
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The Alberni Valley Bulldogs added two players to their roster on the January 10th deadline.
Joining the Bulldogs are 1993 born defenseman Ryan Renz and 1992 born forward Pearce
Eviston.
Eviston, 6'0" 185lbs, joins the Bulldogs after playing four months
with the 1st place Greater Vancouver Canadians in the British
Columbia Major Midget League (BCMML).
In 22 games Pearce lead
his team in scoring tallying 11 goals, 23 assists for a total of 34
points while also spending 50 minutes in the penalty box.
Eviston was selected to play in the BCMML All-star game that is being held January 15in Kelowna, however will not be eligible to play after joining the Bulldogs.
"Pearce is a player that has been on our staffs' radar since the beginning of the season. He is a
very competitive player. He is a solid all round forward that has a good offensive skill set,
combined with the ability to compete physically." comments GM/Head Coach Nolan Graham.
"Pearce is a great addition to lineup as we move forward this season, and in the future."
Renz, 6'2" 200lbs, joins to the Bulldogs after playing the first
half of the season with the Castelgar Rebels in the Kootenay
International Junior "B" League (KIJHL).
Renz scored 8 goals,
18 assists and served 133 penalty minutes over 29 games this
season for the Rebels, earning him a selection to the KIJHL All-
star game.
"Ryan is player that will bring great depth to our roster this season. He is an extremely hard
competitor, and adds a physical presence to our defensive unit. Combined with his ability to be
an offensive player, Ryan has already generated interest from numerous NCAA schools. We
look forward to having Ryan compete, and develop in a Bulldogs uniform." comments GM/Head Coach Graham

Due to the new laws on not being on your cell phone, I had to turn back and drive down a service road to get back to the sign.Where I got OUT of my vehicle - to take this beauty of a picture. Two cars honked at me while I took it.

Does Mitch MacMillan have 47 goals?

For road games, the tradition on the bus after the game sees Bulldog Bussie Ron Sandberg calling the game-winning goal scorer up to the front of the bus for the customary "two honks" of the horn - symbolizing the two points earned. When he yelled at Tye Lewis to come up yesterday, he said along the way that he thought Mitch might have tipped the shot on the goal that made it 3-2 Dogs.
Interesting.
I'm only bringing it up for the significance in the 50 for 50 race, not to talk one away from Tye Lewis.
Tye Lewis already thinks I don't like him (jokingly) as when I got on the bus after the game yesterday the guys asked me who got the "crunch of the game"
"Lindy" I answered - Robert Lindores.
Lewey (as I call him) was adamant that he thought his open ice crunch on Carson Schell was deserving of the award.
I said sorry, I love ya buddy and it was a great hit, but I just liked Lindores' hit on Gladuik just a little better. Funny stuff.
I don't know if the Dogs will review that goal or not. I don't expect Mitch to say much about it as it's all about "team" but if it makes it 47 in 46 maybe the staff should review it?

The BCHL All-Star festivities get going tomorrow in Nanaimo with the 2010 All-Star banquet at the Vancouver Island Conference Centre.
A great line up of special guests will be there - Dave "Tiger" Williams, Darryl Sittler, Lanny McDonald and last but not least - Paul Kelly as the keynote speaker.
I was NOT planning on attending the banquet, as I'm going to be back in Nanaimo Wednesday to call the All-Star game....but my good friend and Clipper fan Al has been twisting my arm literally out of the socket to attend, even going to far as visiting the broadcast booth yesterday to force a ticket to the banquet into my hand.
Al fought of my protests of "I have to do the morning show the next day, and come back to Nanaimo again anyway" and said "You'll be very happy you decided to make it when you show up" And I conceded he was right.
So I'll probably see you all there tomorrow night.
Where's the Vancouver Island Conference Centre anyway?
Anyone from Port Alberni heading down, into car pooling? Let me know.
Of course the game goes Wednesday at 7:00 at the Frank Crane Arena. Get it on 93.3 The Peak FM as we simulcast the game with our sister station 106.9 The Wolf FM in Nanaimo.
I won't be calling the game - that hurts a little - but I'm just excited to be able to take part as a roving reporter and I'm excited to work with Clipper play-by-play voice Dan Marshall, one of the best in the business, and colour commentator Marlow Weldon.
Dan and I were actually supposed to work together last year at the U17 World Championships.
The original plan was that Dan would do the play-by-play of the bronze medal game while I would do colour, and he'd do colour of the gold medal game while I did play-by-play.
Unfortunately the Clippers BCHL schedule messed things up and we didn't get a chance to share the booth.
So this should be cool Wednesday, as I'll attempt to get some interviews from the benches and dressing rooms and stands as the game goes on.
Catch the pregame show on 93.3 The Peak FM (and 106.9 the Wolf) at 6:30 with the play-by-play beginning at 7.
At last glance there were FOUR seats left for the Bulldogs All-Star bus leaving Wednesday afternoon from the pound. Call the Bulldogs office tomorrow at 723-4412 to battle for the final four seats!

The Dogs have won 10 straight, the Clippers have lost 5 staight.
The Dogs will possibly be a little fatigued, playing their third game in two and a half days. The Clippers on the other hand had last night off.
The Dogs need to be ready from the puck drop as you can bet the Clippers plan to jump on them early.
Catch the pregame show at 2:45 with the puck drop and play-by-play to follow at 3pm.

Dogs @ Kings, All Star Fanbus, Totem Basketball Tourney..strapping on the pads
Greetings from outside the Multiplex as we wait to load the bus to departly shortly for Powell River.
Huge game tonight as the Dogs try to erase the memories of a season opening 9-1 loss, their last game in the Powell River Rec Complex.
No one wouldve believed that the next time the Dogs would step on King ice that they would have a 9 point lead on the rest of the Coastal Conference.
Yet here we are. Catch it all tonight on 93.3 The Peak with the pregame show at 7:15 and the play by play to follow at 7:30.
The longest running High School Basketball Tournament in the province kicks off today at ADSS as its Totem time again.
Action begins today in the ADSS gym after a 1:30 prep rally. Games go throughout the day in the ADSS gym. Alberni takes on Ucluelet at 7pm, get down to ADSS and check it out its some great roundball action.

I strapped on the pads and played net for the first time in a decade last night at the Multiplex. Surprisingly, all my bones and muscles and tendons still appear to work today!
And yes I picked up the win. I was lucky to play for a good team!

Huge game tonight as the Dogs try to erase the memories of a season opening 9-1 loss, their last game in the Powell River Rec Complex.
No one wouldve believed that the next time the Dogs would step on King ice that they would have a 9 point lead on the rest of the Coastal Conference.
Yet here we are. Catch it all tonight on 93.3 The Peak with the pregame show at 7:15 and the play by play to follow at 7:30.
The longest running High School Basketball Tournament in the province kicks off today at ADSS as its Totem time again.
Action begins today in the ADSS gym after a 1:30 prep rally. Games go throughout the day in the ADSS gym. Alberni takes on Ucluelet at 7pm, get down to ADSS and check it out its some great roundball action.

D'OH Canada
After a self imposed day of mourning and reflection after the Canada loss to the US the blog is alive and well again today.
Well....what a game I guess. Highest scoring gold medal game ever. Overtime.
All four goalies used. That's a rarity in a championship game, isn't it?
I wonder what the outcome would have been if Willie Desjardins would have pulled his goalie earlier like Mr. Blais?
No, I'm not hanging it all on the goalie, but he gets a big part of the blame pie.
I said what Canada needed to do and what my fears were going into the game, and they were pretty much realized. As the US coach put it - "we played Canadian Hockey"
Does some of the blame go to Hockey Canada with how they put this team together? Maybe its just me, but I though the Americans just looked three steps faster all night, like they did on New Years Eve.
I think that's partly due to they just plain wanted it more. They just looked like the more desperate and urgent team. There's a fine line between being composed - and being too composed and appearing RELAXED.
I think they also looked faster because they just plain WERE. That's where I think Hockey Canada missed. Team Speed. If you don't have that advantage in this day and age, or if your opponent has a considerable edge on you in speed, its going to be a tough hill to climb and it sure was for Canada.
The late third period two goal comeback was again nothing but pure Canadian legend. AND pure Canadian fan support. Man was that place LOUD when those two went in. I didn't for one minute doubt that a comeback was in the cards when they were down two goals late.
Thanks to the Canadian kids with the big hearts for making us jump around and high five and scream our heads off a couple times late in the third. Now THAT was excitement.
In the end, the better team won.
I don't think I could say that the last time Canada didn't win in 2004 when Marc Andre Fleury scored on himself. Speaking of Fleury, and the last time Canada didn't win....
I'm sure its just coincidence that during their five year medal run Team Canada had goalies from the WHL and OHL carrying their mail, and the last two times they lost, five years apart a guy from the Q was starting?

CANADA vs. USA at the World Juniors go for GOLD.
Man I wish it was 5pm PST already, because I am pumped up for this game big time!

Painful painful painful. Get me in that booth. Or get any other guy from the BCHL calling those games. Sheesh.

It would be interesting to hear the banter in the Bulldogs dressing room today.
I'm pretty sure I know which team Frank Slubowki, Brody Lynott, Ryan Corbiell, Frank Riddle, Tyler Berkholtz,David Dziurzynski, Mitch and Mark MacMillan, Johnny Rogic, Warren Muir, Trent Dorais, Sam and Josh Mitchell, Kevin Ross and Robert Lindores are cheering for.
And I'm pretty sure I know which team Casey Bailey, Matt Hatch, Jeff Reppucci, Nick Cecere, Tye Lewis, and Scott Lewan are cheering for.
It would be interesting to hear the "chirping" back and forth between the two sides. And even more interesting to see if any bonds with teammates were so tight that someone might forsake country for teammate and cheer for "his" side.
Funny stuff.
I'm confident in Team Canada, and I'm REALLY confident in the rabid Canadian fans at Sask place.
Quite frankly, I'm a little worried about the American squad. They out played Canada for 90% of the game on New Years Eve in my opinion. They kinda reminded me of the Bulldogs actually - always skating, always flying, just simply in a different gear than Canada was.
If that's the same deal tonight - there won't be a record breaking 6th straight gold medal for Canada, unless the crowd is just that amazing, or the goal tending steals the game for them.
They must be MUCH better.

AND hopefully a busload of fans!
Catch the All-Star game in Nanaimo with the Bulldog FANBUS heading down to the Frank Crane Arena, with ME being your host on the bus.
Let the Bulldogs know by THIS THURSDAY if you plan on attending. Cost for transportation, game ticket, and free draws on the way down is $40.00

The Alberni Valley Bulldogs will be having their annual Spring Camps this April.
The Bulldogs will have a Bantam age division (14-15 years old) and a Junior age division (16-20 years old).
The Spring Camps will be April 2-4 in Port Alberni at the Multiplex, April 9-11 in the Vancouver area (exact location TBA) and on April 16-18 in Osoyoos at the Sunbowl Arena.
The Spring Camps are an opportunity for players to show off their skills to the Alberni Valley Bulldogs scouts and staff in hopes of attaining an invitation to the Bulldogs main camp in August 2010.
Players will participate in practices, fitness testing, goalie sessions, evaluations, presentations and games.
To register go online to www.albernivalleybulldogs.ca and follow instructions or by mailing in spring camp brochure to Alberni Valley Bulldogs 3737 Roger Street, Port Alberni BC, V9Y-8E3.
Also, players can register by fax (250-723-4452) or by phone at (250-723-4412).
Register by January 31st and receive a $25.00 discount on registration.

Dogs win 8th straight

Dogs host Express this afternoon, Canada vs Swiss at World Juniors...
Busy sports day.
The NFL is getting pretty interesting as they near the end of their season.
And Canada of course is taking on the Swiss in the Quarters at the World Juniors.
AND last but not least, the Alberni Valley Bulldogs are playing their first home game of 2010 - before the head on the road for SIX straight games over the next two weekends.
Get it all on 93.3 The Peak FM with the pregame show at 2:15 and the puck drop at 2:30 this afternoon.
After a great debut on Wednesday night, Alberni Golf Club Head Pro Bruce MacDonald will join me in the booth again, as Rick Schievink is still at the 2010 U17's in Timmins Ontario on the Team Pacific staff.
My second intermission feature guest today is former Bulldog Jordan Kremyr, now attending Providence.
Yes I'll get it on the blog eventually if you miss it.
See you at the Pound! Pack that shack as it's the last home game for a while.

Happy New Year, Canada vs USA a classic at World Juniors, "Winter Classic" at Fenway Park today...
Happy 2010! Hope last night was a blast and this morning isn't too much of a rough morning!
Wow, just plain WOW what a game yesterday. Canada was heavily outplayed in my opinion, but as only Canada can seem to do, they just plain come together at crunch time and come up with huge plays.
Alex Pietrangelo's game tying short handed goal brought me out of my shoes, what a shot.
