Dogs land Jared Wilson, BLOGGER BACK FROM HIBERNATION!

OUTSTANDING news here - Jared Wilson has committed to the Bulldogs for next season. We had Jared on the air for a couple of minutes during the second period of "Pack the 'Plex" night when he was in town as the Dogs were trying their best to show him all that Port Alberni and the Bulldogs Organization had to offer. The team - and the community at large - evidently did a great job and left a lasting impression as Jared will wear the Bulldog sweater next season! Awesome! Welcome to the 'Pound Jared!

PRESS RELEASE
March 28, 2012
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Port Alberni, BC – The Alberni Valley Bulldogs are very excited to announce that Jared Wilson (1994) from Calgary, Alberta, has committed to play for the Alberni Valley Bulldogs starting the 2012/13 season. Wilson is a 6’1” left-handed defenseman that weighs in at 175lbs.

Wilson comes to the Bulldogs organization from the Calgary Royals Midget AAA program where he led the Royals in scoring (34GP, 12G, 20A, 32PTS) and penalty minutes (70PIM).

Moreover, Wilson was the league’s top scoring defenseman and
was his team’s alternate captain. “I am very excited to play for the Alberni Valley Bulldogs next season,” said Wilson. “Port Alberni is a beautiful town and has a great hockey atmosphere.”

Wilson and his father visited Port Alberni in early March and had the opportunity to experience “Pack The Plex” night. “The Bulldogs have the best fans in the league which I got a taste of at the “Pack The Plex” game,” said Wilson. “It is very impressive that the organization is consistantly developing players to the next level. I look forward to working with the coaching staff and the team to win a championship in the coming years.”

“We are very excited that Jared and his family decided to commit to the Alberni Valley Bulldogs over the other teams that were pursuing him,” said Head Coach Kevin Willison. “Jared is a competitor with tremendous upside who can also contribute offensively. He comes from a great family and will be a great addition to the Bulldogs line up.”

Wilson will continue to train in Calgary, Alberta, during the off-season and we look
forward to welcoming Jared when main camp opens in mid-August.

Welcome to the Alberni Valley Bulldogs organization, Jared.

Dogs 5 Rivermen 2

Great way to end the season today as the Dogs topped the Rivermen 5-2 after building up a 2-0 lead after one and a 4-0 lead just five minutes into the second. After that it was Jim Kruger keeping his team in the game as the Dogs pressed for more, followed by Max Fenkell playing outstanding as the Rivermen battled hard to get back in it down 4-2 heading into the final period.

To read more about it, and the week that was, check out my "Weekly Recap" from the Bulldogs website HERE

That's it for now, a long list of thank yous and reflections in the days to come.

SPRING AHEAD, Dogs host Rivermen for season finale, Nolan Graham interview, Boston PIzza Post Game

It's always a special day as emotions run the gamut when a season comes to an end. Of course in the case of the 20 year old players it is a career that comes to an end. Anyone involved in hockey or any team sport in any way and at any level certainly knows what I'm talking about as when a season ends a team also ends. As much as things will stay the same and another season will come the same group will never be the same again. As I said it's a special day for anyone emotionally invested in the season,  from player to coach to staffer to fan and parent and yes, even radio guy.

Here's hoping it's a fun day and a good memory and a great game to watch today as the 2011-2012 campaign ends for both the Alberni Valley Bulldogs and the Langley Rivermen at the Dog Pound on Boston Pizza Bulldogs Hockey on 93.3 The Peak FM. Catch the pregame show at 2:15 with the play by play to follow at 2:30 with Bruce MacDonald along side me providing colour and analysis.

2009-2010 Bulldog Head Coach Nolan Graham, now an Assistant with RPI is our 2nd Intermission guest while Bulldog Captain and 20 year old Trent Dorais joins us in the 1st Intermission show.

Don't forget about the Boston Pizza Post Game show live on THE PEAK following the game as soon as I can get down there!

Oh yeah, and I hope you SPRUNG AHEAD and changed those clocks!!

Caps 9 Dogs 4...

...However, the REAL SCORE is 1854 - as in a SELL OUT on Pack the Plex night at the Dog Pound.

While the Hollywood Script didn't play out on the scoreboard, with the incredible atmosphere and support from the crowd in the building it still feels like it's a happy ending, even though the "good guys" didn't win. No offense Caps, you are a great team and a fun one to watch, even if it involved at times going to the net at will and scoring at will on the Dogs.

The Dogs appeared tight from the get-go, somewhat expected with the biggest crowd in a long while, and the Caps appeared loose and ready to enjoy the experience as they raced out to an immediate 1-0 lead. The Dogs deserve a ton of credit for battling back over and over again, while the Caps deserve credit for fighting off the crowd and the Dogs momentum by repeatedly answering back in short order to stop any momentum and comeback before it really got going in a wild and crazy first period that saw eight, yes EIGHT combined goals with the Caps up 5-3 after one.

The second period was tighter and more controlled, with way less in the way of chances and both goalies coming up with several big saves to keep the score the same way into period three.

In the third the Caps got the crucial "next one" early in the third to open up a three-goal spread and the Dogs appeared to wilt while the Caps spelled blood as they walked to the net unchecked on several occasions to turn it into the rout. Click HERE to check the boxscore.

Despite the home team on the wrong end of a lopsided score the crowd kept cheering and the Dogs kept fighting, an incredible "only in the Alberni Valley" example as the crowd refused to fall quiet and continued chanting "Go Dogs Go" and even got up for a standing ovation to celebrate the efforts of the team and everyone who made "Pack the Plex" happen.

The "Green Men" were awesome, the "Noise making Committee" in their special referee suits were great, and it was awesome to have both drummers - BIG and LITTLE Dog firing up the crowd. Several Salmon made an appearance on the ice, the Multiplex staff had to fly to the beer store to replenish their stocks mid game - that's when you know it's a good night - and the place roared like it hasn't in quite some time. I was very very happy to get a mid-game email from Noreen Pelk informing me that said in the subject line "SOLD OUT TONIGHT!"

Here's hoping it's the beginning of a renaissance that will see the building like that night after night like it used to be. Just an awesome night to be a part of, and I can't thank all the people responsible enough for all their work into making it happen.

While the night is over it's legacy will live on as the evening was captured by several cameras filming the spectacle to make a recruiting video to show prospective future players how amazing the Alberni Valley is. What a perfect example it was tonight of how we can all come together to make something amazing happen!

Off to do my write up now, yikes 13 goals!

Final weekend...PACK THE PLEX tonight, Dogs host Caps, Matt Auerbach interview, SIC BUDDY+Braedon Hyland foundation

Can't believe it's the final two games of the season already. On any other year the Bulldogs are preparing for the Playoffs. I certainly didn't like the four teams per-conference idea when it first came out, and I really hate it now. However, I don't run the league I just work in conjunction with it and for every rhyme their is a reason. It's pretty tough to like it for the folks in Vernon, Nanaimo, Port Alberni and Westside. Enough of that though!

Catch the pregame show on Boston Pizza Bulldogs Hockey on 93.3 The Peak FM with Bruce and I tonight at 6:45 with the puck drop and all the play-by-play to follow at 7:00

Dogs 20 year old goalie Max Fenkell will join us in our 1st Intermission as we continue to talk to the 20's before their final season ends. Our 2nd Intermission feature guest is former Bulldog Trainer Matt Auerbach, now working with the Victoria Royals.

Of course ITS PACK THE PLEX night tonight as the Cowichan Valley Capitals are in town - here's a great video from SHAW about it all...

Hopefully we can get all the above people IN the rink tonight!

Some special stuff for today - purchase one of the below special AVB treats at Tim Horton's and receive some free 'Dogs stuff, such as a noise maker, pin, pencils/pens key chains etc! Cool stuff Timmy's way to go!

One of the 500 cowbells that will be handed out throughout the rink tonight...awesome! GOTTA HAVE MORE COWBELL
Part of the "Noisemaking Committee" that will get you going and keep you going tonight! Beware these two!!!
One last note - anyone who renews their Season Tickets for next year - or purchases new seats - BEFORE THE END OF TONIGHTS GAME, will be entered into a draw to win Two tickets plus dinner and accomodations as the Canucks host the Oilers for their final regular season game on April 7th all courtesy of Boston Pizza! Way to go BP, cool prize and great incentive to get your seats!

Changing gears..

The hockey world lost a beauty this winter when Walker Hyland's brother Braedon passed away. His family is doing all they can to celebrate his memory and to make it live on in a great way - by helping those less fortunate to be able to play the game of hockey. Sic buddy! A very fun night at the Dog Pound with good atmosphere in the building, good special teams and goaltending from Matt Larose and a big 4-0 win over a bitter rival. Still hard to believe that the Clippers haven't visited the Dog Pound since November isn't it?

The game had great flow and pace early with each team having their opportunities. The Bulldogs would draw first blood in the back half of the opener for a 1-0 lead after one when Ryan Lough finished off a three-way passing play on the rush when he put a shot on net from the slot that appeared to hit a Nanaimo stick before going up and over Christopher Eiserman for a 1-0 Dogs lead after one.

The second saw a 5-minute penalty to Brenden Forbes put the Dogs on a long power play, but it was instead the Clippers that carried the play with aggressive and urgent penalty killing to draw a penalty and make it 4 on 4. After the four-aside was done the Dogs went back to the power play and they connected to make it 2-0 when Tyler Berkholtz put a one-timer from the slot on net that appeared to hit Eiserman and then the post. Referee Adam Griffiths was directly behind the net to signal goal as the Dogs crashed the crease and found a way to get the puck over the line as Josh Mitchell was credited for the marker. The Clippers would have their fair share of chances to get in the game late in the period when they carried the play, forcing the Dogs into repeated penalties and back-to-back 5 on 3 power plays for the Clippers. The Dogs penalty killers held with Matt Larose coming up big and Josh Mitchell winning several big draws on the start of the two-man advantages to kill precious time to keep it 2-0 Dogs after two.

Again the Dogs ended up in the penalty box with the Clippers pushing the pace to start the third on the power play but they were unable to find the net. The Bulldogs would go up 3-0 just seconds after a Trent Dorais scrap with Graeme McCormack as Alex Grupe tipped the puck in deep where it was found back of the net by Tyler Berkholtz, who in turn set up Josh Mitchell on the doorstep where he one-timed one home with just over ten minutes to play in regulation. The game would get ugly shortly afterwards when Kyle Kramer got the jump on Turner Popoff in a scrap, with the end result being Popoff's head being driven into the ice resulting in a huge pool of blood on the ice and a four minute Bulldog power play. Yet another Dogs penalty would take them off the advantage, but on the second minor they found the net to make it 4-0 when Alex Grupe tipped in a Daniel Delbianco point shot with 6:45 to go. The Clippers pushed hard to snap the shutout with a power play in the final two minutes, but again Matt Larose and the penalty killers stood tall as time expired.

Final shots favoured the Clippers 41-33 with Matt Larose and Christopher Eiserman being the goalies of record with the Dogs going 2 for 5 on the power play and the Clippers going 0 for 6.

Three Stars:
3rd) Chase Van Allen
2nd) Walker Hyland
1st) Matt Larose

Next up, PACK THE PLEX Friday when the Capitals are in town...Great game Dogs!

Rivermen 3 Dogs 2

Another good effort without the desired end result today in Langley saw the Bulldogs fall 3-1 to the Rivermen, despite outshooting them 44-34 as James Barr was fantastic in the Langley net to earn the win and 1st star honours. Read all about it and the week that was from my "Weekly Preview" article on the Bulldogs website here

That's it for the road portion of the Dogs schedule as they finish 8-20-1 and 1 away from home this season. They have three more games to go this week, all at home, as the Clippers are in on Tuesday before the Caps visit on "Pack the 'Plex" Friday and the 2012 season ends with the Langley Rivermen at the Pound Sunday afternoon.

That's it for now, back to the bus ride en route to the Ferry and doing some homework to prepare for the week ahead.

Dogs romp Grizz 12-2, visit Rivermen today...Doug Krantz interview

A tough night for the Grizz and a great night for the Dogs saw many players have career (and possibly record) nights as the Dogs scored five times in the first, six in the second and one in the third to win 12-2. Too much to write, check out the boxscore here

The Bulldogs finish a three-game in two and a half day weekend today when they face the Rivermen in Langley for the second meeting between the teams in seven days after a 4-3 OT win by the Dogs in Langley last Sunday afternoon
