NHL Draft tonight and tomorrow, Mark MacMillan ranked, U17 Alumni, Trent Dorais at the World Championships, Angel's BBQ

The 2010 NHL Draft gets going in Los Angeles tonight with Round 1 getting underway tonight. The subsequent rounds go tomorrow. Mark MacMillan was ranked 135th amongst North American Skaters when the final Central Scouting Rankings came out.

If Mark ends up getting selected by an NHL Club, he will be the first ever Alberni Valley Bulldog drafted by an NHL team. No doubt some anxious moments in the MacMillan household. Good luck Mark!

One more note about Mark - someone raised the topic in the comments section below as to whether or not he has committed to the University of North Dakota. I too have heard the rumours for some time now, but however, I haven't seen anything CONFIRMED. It was quickly mentioned at the Bulldogs Corporate Night on Tuesday night, but as of yet nothing has been confirmed by the Sioux or the Bulldogs. Until then, I'm like you in that I have just heard the rumours, I'm hoping for a Press Release or some confirmation soon!

Local Hockey fans might remember the 2009 World U17 Challenge being promoted as a chance to see the stars of tomorrow, today. It certainly seems that the statement was right on the money....read on.

2010 NHL Draft Top Prospects Participated in 2009 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge

PORT ALBERNIFriday night’s televised first round of the 2010 National Hockey League Entry Draft is a “who’s who” of the world’s best young hockey talent and Alberni Valley residents may recognize many of those names as participants in the 2009 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.  With players like Tyler Seguin, Erik Gudbranson, and Brandon Gormley all likely to be Top 5 picks, Port Alberni had the privilege of watching the NHL’s future stars up close and personal in the highest level of competition possible at their age group.
Event organizing committee chair, Ron Paulson beams with pride when he says: “Hockey Canada and the committee promised that we’d see the best young players possible who would eventually join the likes of current NHL stars, Roberto Luongo, Ryan Kesler, Henrik Sedin and Alex Ovechkin. Friday’s NHL draft is just the next step in the process and I think we can all be a proud of being a small part in the development of those players.”
Other players to watch for in the first round to be televised live from Los Angeles on TSN are: Brett Connolly who competed here for Team Pacific and 2009 Team USA U-17 Goalie Jack Campbell. Russian Evgeny Kuznetsov and Finn Mikael Granlund also have strong potential. Along with Canadian players Mark Pysyk and Jeff Skinner.
When asked who Ron would pick from this group for his favorite team, the Edmonton Oilers, he said, “Brett Connolly has all the talent and speed in the world to be an impact forward.”  Director of Sponsorships, Dave McCormick, on the other hand, would select “the next Niklas Lidstrom,” in his assessment, Brandon Gormley. Whether it’s Taylor Hall (played in 2008 U17s) or Tyler Seguin that goes first overall to Edmonton or any of the others on the long list of prospects that played in the 2009 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge there is no doubt that we got to watch the best that our game, our future, had to offer!

Cecere USHL Bound

This one is a little surprising to me, but only for the reason that I was like everyone else in that I expected Cecere to suit up for the University of Nebraska Omaha at the NCAA level for the upcoming season.

Maybe I'm confused, but as far as I can remember Cecere arrived in Bulldog land last summer tabbed for the NCAA for 2010-11. Maybe UNO told him that they wanted him to play another year of Junior?

Whatever the case, you can't blame a kid for taking the opportunity if he's able to make a higher level league like the USHL while also being able to play closer to home.

I've run into some debate on the USHL being a "higher league". Quite simply, I call it a higher league as it's designated as Tier 1, much like the WHL/OHL/QMJHL. It's at the very least the best Junior League in the US, and a competitor of the BCHL. From the USHL's perspective, I would think that their #1 competition is Major Junior, not the BCHL. Several BCHL players have left the league and made a go of it in the USHL, but from my recent memory, more players have given the USHL a go and in the end they ended up back in the BCHL, like Sahir Gill of the Vernon Vipers, for instance.

Here's hoping for Nick's sake it doesn't end up like the Adam Hout situation, as he left the team after the 08-09 season to try the USHL, only to end up back with the Bulldogs around Christmas.

Best of luck to Nick in the future.

Lars Hepso on THE PEAK Morning Show today....Relay for Life, other Community Happenings.

Just after the 8:10am News/Sports and Weather update today I will be joined on the 93.3 The Peak FM Morning Show by the latest Bulldog Recruit, Lars Hepso.

If you aren't in Peak listening range, get it on our website at www.933thepeak.com

Don't forget that the Canadian Cancer Society's Relay for Life takes place tonight at Bob Dailey Stadium from 7pm to tomorrow morning at 7am. I will be one of the Mc's of the earlier portions of the event. After hosting it last year and staying up right through to 7am, I'm taking a lesser role this year.

A final fundraiser for Relay for Life today up at Alberni Chrysler as they are having the "bosses" washing cars, with proceeds going to Relay.....So head up there and put them to work! The Alberni Auto Group (Alberni Chrysler, Alberni Toyota) made a commitment to donate a portion of all vehicle sales throughout the year to Relay.....at last report yesterday they were up over $7,000.00 if I remember correctly. Great stuff.

More from the "car people in town" comes from Van Isle Ford as they are trying to raise $6,000.00 tomorrow at ADSS. I can't tell you how many emails, texts, and facebooks that I have received about this one from people urging me to promote it heavily. It's obvious with the amount of funding (or lack thereof) for our local high school that this $6,000.00 could be very very very well used by the school.

How does it work? Easy, just head to ADSS tomorrow, and take a test drive of a Ford vehicle. For EVERY TEST DRIVE (limit 1 per household) the Ford Motor Company will donate $20.00 to ADSS, up to a Maximum of $6,000.00

No single community in Canada has ever raised the MAXIMUM of $6,000.00 so please get out tomorrow after 11am, head to ADSS and take a test drive, and make them $20.00!

There will also be a Hot Dog BBQ by donation with all monies raised going to ADSS as well.

We are very lucky to have good dealerships in town, who are doing what they can to support the community we call home, so please support them!

That's it for now!

Eviston signs with Grizzlies, Alberni Tyees Update, Alberni Golf Update,

A surprising news item today, as the Victoria Grizzlies announced  on their website that they have signed Pearce Eviston for 2010-2011...... Sorry, make that the Colwood/Langford Grizzlies.

The Victoria Grizzlies are excited to announce the signing of Pearce Eviston. Eviston a 6’1”, 190lbs., 1992 born forward, joins the Grizzlies after playing last season for B.C. Major Midget, Vancouver Canadians until January, when he signed with the BCHL, Port Alberni Bulldogs. In 22 games for the Vancouver Canadians he tallied 11 goals and 23 assists. Before signing with the Bulldogs in January, he was an affiliated player with the Grizzlies last season and played in three games for us scoring his first BCHL goal as a Grizzly in Merritt.

Sorry, but the Bulldogs haven't been the "Port Alberni" Bulldogs for one single second of their existence. They always have, and always will be - the ALBERNI VALLEY Bulldogs. Yes, they play in the city of Port Alberni, but that doesn't matter, as it's not the TEAM NAME.

It's not the Duncan Capitals is it? The Vancouver Lions?

Sorry, it's a pet peeve (like you couldn't tell, ha ha) that has annoyed me over the last year. More and more BCHL rinks and teams keep referring to the team here as the "Port Alberni Bulldogs" which just isn't true.

Ok, back to your regularly scheduled programming. I will never mention it again.

This raises the number of players who wore a Bulldog last year, who will wear a Grizzlies uniform this year to TWO, as earlier this spring Bulldog Affiliate Player Evan Richardson also signed with the Grizz.

I'm sure I was in the same boat as the rest of you with this one as any news that Eviston had been released by the Dogs was just that -NEWS to me.

I certainly liked what Pearce showed on the ice through moments last season...but of course there is a lot more to it than that. In the eyes of Head Coach and GM Paul Esdale, he wanted to make a change, and that is all that matters.

It's interesting that Eviston started as an AP with the Grizzlies, then signed full time with the Dogs, then was released by the Dogs, and has now signed full time with the Grizzlies again.

Best of luck Pearce, we will certainly see lots of you with the amount of games these two teams play.

In my opinion, this shows how the Bulldog Organization is going in the right direction. Two years ago, even a year ago, the thought would have never crossed your mind that the Grizzlies would want any players in the Bulldog system.

Congrats to the Alberni Valley Midget Tyees, winners on the weekend in Surrey....Thanks Simon for the update.

The Alberni Valley Tyees Midget Lacrosse team swept 5 games to win the Craig Bailey Memorial Lacrosse Tournament held June 11-13, 2010 in Surrey, B.C.  In round robin play they defeated Cowichan Thunder 9-2, Langley Thunder 9-1 and host Surrey Rebels 9-4.  Semi-Final defeated Delta Hawks 10-3 and in the Gold medal game beat Nicola Valley 7-4.

More on Trent Murdoch, Hawks have parade

A special stick-tap to my old teammate on Bulldogs Broadcasts, Alf Thompson, for some additional stats on the newest member of the Bulldogs, Nanaimo native Trent Murdoch who is pictured above as a member of the Comox Valley Glacier Kings in 2008-2009.

Murdoch has a nice resume beyond his just shy of 20 goals and 50 points season last year in the BCHL....Murdoch was the 2009 V.I.J.H.L Rookie of the Year as he amassed 65 points in 48 regular season games with 27 goals and 38 assists. Great numbers. He scored 8 goals on the power play, 3 goals short handed, and he spent 72 minutes in the penalty box.

His 65 points was good for second overall in league scoring.

Congrats to the Hawks and their fans.....I sadly didn't see a single moment of the action from the clincher, as I had a double header on the Slo-Pitch Fields. Whomever comes up with our schedule really needs to consider the playoffs!

I finally saw the winning goal yesterday. Wow, what an odd one. That's how you bump a 'since '61 slump. It was funny to listen to all four broadcasts, CBC, NBC, Flyers Radio, and Hawks Radio. NO ONE got the goal call right, as everyone had varying degrees of confusion in their calls of the biggest goal of the year. It was certainly an odd one.

The biggest laugh I got was from the NBC call by Doc Emrick. He is without a doubt the NUMBER ONE play-by-play caller in the US. And while I would take him over almost anyone else that calls games South of the Border, I still am not a HUGE fan. In my opinion, he has a whole bunch of 'isms' that rub me the wrong way. I'm sure I have lots that rub people the wrong way too. I just don't like that his 'isms' seem to just "fill in the blanks", and they aren't necessary what is ACTUALLY HAPPENING during the game.

Case in point is "it's kicked on back". Doc must say this 764 times a game. "kicked on back, kicked on back"

I found the goal call on Kane's winner nothing short of hilarious. SHOT...SCO..........AND IT RATTLES AROUND, AND ITS KICKED ON BACK AND               SCORRRRRRE

MAYBE you could say that there was some "rattling around" but there was definitely not a "kicked on back" as the puck didn't move once it went in the net. Watch....

That's it for today...besides the World Cup....GO BRAZIL!

Hawks can clinch tonight, Andy Oakes named Executive of the Year - AGAIN, Hook and Slice Golf,

The Stanley Cup will be in the building tonight as the Hawks visit the Flyers holding a 3-2 series lead, trying to end the longest championship drought in the NHL at 41 years.

The Hawks are really good on the road. The Flyers are really good at home.

This one should be a beauty.

Sadly I have a double header at the park for Slo Pitch tonight, so here's hoping it's either rained out, or the Flyers force a Game 7 for Friday night so I don't miss the last hockey game of the year!

Huge congrats to Andy Oakes!

If being recognized once wasn't enough, hopefully his winning this award twice will really make the Bulldogs fanbase realize how hard he works not only for the team, but also for the league as a whole.

Alberni Valley’s Andy Oakes named
BCHL Executive of the Year for 2010

Burnaby, BC -- June 8, 2010 -- Alberni Valley Bulldogs’ President and Governor Andy Oakes has been selected by the British Columbia Hockey League’s Board of Governors as its Executive of the Year for the second consecutive season, the league announced Tuesday.

The award comes on the heels of an outstanding year for Oakes’s Bulldogs, who led the Coastal Conference with 93 points prior to a postseason run that saw the team reach the seventh game of the Conference Finals. Three Alberni Valley players and head coach Nolan Graham were recognized with Conference Awards at the conclusion of the regular season.

Oakes has also taken on a leadership role in the growth of the league, as he chairs the BCHL’s Strategic Planning Committee and sits on the five-member League Executive.

“The BCHL is a great league and it’s an honour to be recognized by your fellow governors for your contributions,” says Oakes. “The Bulldogs organization takes great pride in working towards being leaders on and off the ice in the BCHL.”

“On behalf of the BCHL and our Board of Governors, I’m pleased to once again congratulate Andy on this well-deserved recognition,” Commissioner John Grisdale says. “Andy’s hard work and vision have been rewarded with tremendous success in Alberni Valley, and those same qualities have made him a valuable leader in the continuing growth of our league.”

Oakes, who had previously suited up in the BCHL as a player, returned to the league following the purchase of the Alberni Valley Bulldogs by the Okanagan Hockey Schools in 2007. Oakes is the President of Okanagan Hockey Schools and the Okanagan Hockey Academy.
