26^th Wrestling Invitational Lives Up To Billing

The twenty-sixth annual Alberni Invitational Wrestling Tournament lived up to its billing as one of the top wrestling tournaments in Canada. Over 600 hundred wrestlers from 63 different schools competed in the five different age categories at the Invitational on the weekend and the organization was flawless.

“We have an amazing group of volunteers and tremendous community support,” exposed Tournament Co-Chair Tom McEvay, “each year our machine gears up and we seem to be able to put on an even better event. We know that the coaches and wrestlers love coming here. It is a real credit to everyone who helps in some way from our volunteers, to our sponsors, the School District and the City who provide facilities and support. It is a huge amount of work but we all seem to thrive on the knowledge that this is a good thing for our youth, our sport and for the community.”

The 2009 Invitational tournament was actually the 30^th year in a row that the Alberni wrestling program has put on a major tournament. There were twenty six Alberni Invitationals and then the local organizers hosted the BC High School Championships four times in 1985, 1998, 2002 and 2008. “Thirty straight years is a long time to be putting on an event of this magnitude,” said McEvay, “if it wasn’t for my co-chairs Darral Clark and Stuart Messenger and our incredible volunteers, we would never be able to do this year after year.”

The Invitational was of course, also a great success on the mats. Thirty nine local wrestlers placed in the top six of their respective age and weight divisions. Nine of those placers were gold medal champions. ADSS senior Michael Cappus led the local contingent as he has all year with an outstanding performance at 74 kg. Cappus not only won the weight class he was also named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Juvenile Male Wrestler an honour he also won a few weeks ago at the Western Canadian Age Class.

“We moved Michael up to 74 kg to be challenged in preparation for the BC’s,” said ADSS coach John McDonald, “ in the final his opponent was bigger and stronger and Michael had to adjust, think and execute his game plan. After being dominated in the first round Michael came back to win round two and then dominate round three and finally win with a pin. He was very deserving of being selected by a vote of coaches as the Most Outstanding Wrestler.”

Cappus was not the only Most Outstanding Wrestler for the local squad. Grade 10 ADSS wrestler Isaiah Taylor equaled that feat in the boys 78 kg Cadet division Taylor has been getting tougher all season as he develops into one of the top young wrestlers in the province. At the Invitational he was dominant throughout. In the final he handily defeated a strong Trent Woida of Terry Fox Secondary.

Isaiah has come on like gang busters this year,” said coach McDonald, “ he is getting physically stronger all the time but more importantly he is really developing his wrestling abilities and he is starting to think like a wrestler. He is only in grade 10 and yet he will be a medal threat at the high school BC’s. He has a great future in this sport.”

Taylor led a strong group of grade 9-10 ADSS wrestlers to the team title in the Cadet Boys division. Teammates Austin Evans and Cullen Hines were also Cadet champions at 54 kg and 66 kg respectively. Evans and Hines are also young wrestlers who have taken some huge steps this season to becoming two of the top young prospects in the province. Alec Delcourt had a tremendous tournament and only lost once to teammate Evans in the final at 54 kg to take a silver. Sky Daoust was fourth at 57 kg Cadet, Norman David was fifth at 57 kg and Dustin Haddad was sixth at 60 kg.

In the Juvenile men’s division ADSS was second overall to returning provincial champions Guildford Park of Surrey. In addition to Cappus’s outstanding performance ADSS grade 11 wrestler Cody McEvay overcame some injuries to win gold at 66 kg. Teammate Kyle Plaunt continued his return rise to provincial prominance with a great performance at 57 kg only losing a close battle in the final to OC Saffar of Guilford. Kraig Doskotch also returned to the medal podium with a strong sliver showing at 51 kg. Senior Christian Hansen finished his Invitational career with a silver at 70 kg. Kastin Whipp was fourth at 90 kg for ADSS.

“ Our guys really stepped up this weekend,” said McDonald, “ Cody’s performance at 66 kg was amazing since he has been forced to completely change his style of wrestling due to two dislocated thumb injuries. Kyle has really made a comeback after a poor grade 11 season. It was great to see Kraig wrestle well since he very capable of a BC medal. I was particularly pleased to see Christian come through with a silver in this his grade 12 year.”

Not to be outdone by her male counterparts, grade 11 ADSS wrestler Savannah Toth showed why she is a reigning provincial and National champion in winning at 64 kg. “We knew the Carson Graham girl would push Savannah in the final,” observed McDonald, “ she controlled Savannah in round one and Savannah, like Michael, listened to us between rounds and made the adjustments necessary to win the match. This coachability is what makes champions.”

Also on the girls side grade 9 ADSS wrestler Brittany Henderson continued her impressive rise with a gold at 47 kg Cadet. Teammate Daley Forbes was a silver medalist at 69 Cadet after a close loss to Taylor Follansbee of Elrose Saskatchewan in the final. Young Remi Wells of Dunn won the gold in the School Girl 35 kg weight. Lauren Barber of Dunn and Rhea Wing of Neill were second at 35 kg and 41 kg school girl.

Dunn’s Brittany Battie (35 kg) and Lee Anne Marshall (63 kg) and Neill’s Hailee Beckett ( 58 kg) were all bronze school age medalists. ADSS’s Brianne Charles was third at 60 kg Cadet. Lyndsey Taylor (41 kg), Michel Kurucz (45 kg), and Danika Bratt (58 kg) all of Dunn were fourth in their school age weights. Jordie Bodnar (Dunn 41 kg), Vanessa Beckett (Neill 51 kg), Lily Campbell (Dunn 54 kg), and Sophie Vanderlee (Dunn 58 kg) were fifth place school girl placers.

One the guys side in the school age division it was Neill’s Austin Jaworski leading the way with a gold medal performance at 60 kg. Teammate Jesse Wagner look great on route to a silver at 35 kg. Brother Jordan Wagner was fourth at 39 kg. Dunn’s Colin Simister (31 kg), Riley Kuxhaus (35 kg), Casey Davidson (47 kg) and Luke Bitter (60 kg) were all fifth in their school boy weight class. Kenny Wale (Dunn 39 kg), Jacob Arcus (Neill 47 kg), Graham Villette (Neill 55 kg) and Russell David (Dunn 45 kg) placed sixth in school boy weights.

In the team standings ADSS was very strong in every division. They won Cadet boys with 70 pts over second place Balmoral (60 pts) and third place Carson Graham (49 pts). Balmoral reversed things in the Cadet girls division finishing with 37 pts to ADSS second place total of 27 pts. Terry Fox was a close third at 26 pts. In the Juvenile division ADSS finished second in boys with 60 pts to Guildford’s first place total of 73 pts and ahead of Maple Ridge’s 44 pts. Carson Graham won the Juvenile girls division over Mouat, Guildford Park and Ucluelet with ADSS fifth. Dunn was third in the School Girl team race behind Phoenix and Balmoral while Neill was fifth in the School Boys and sixth in School Girls. St Thomas Moore won the School Boys division.

In the Open Division North Island College wrestlers did well. Harry Campbell won the gold at 57 kg while Travis Carey was second at 76 kg. The Elementary division was again very popular with over 100 kids in grades 3-5 participating from local schools and number from out of town as well. McEvay was quick to give that credit to local coach Russ Bodnar. “Russ did a wonderful job with the Elementary program the past month,” said McEvay, “the kids had a great time and it was nice to see so many of them come out and get some matches at the Invitational and to experience that whole atmosphere.”

With another successful Invitational in the books the attention for our local wrestlers now turns to the Island Secondary Schools Championships next weekend in Campbell River and the Island 15 and Under in Victoria in two weeks. The Secondary School Championships feature the top grade 8-12 wrestlers vying to qualify for the BC’s at the end of the month at SFU in Burnaby. The 15 and Under gives our younger wrestlers a chance to finish their school season.

Good times at the 2nd Annual Angel and Jelly Bean Variety Show

Hi to all,

Angel and Jelly Bean’s 2^nd Annual Variety Show brought in $4,734.50 for Variety’s Kids. It was an incredible awesome and very heartwarming day to say the least.

Thank you to everyone that helped to pull off this wonderful event. You all rock!!!!

The latest coin drive total for the Alberni Valley, Tofino and Ucluelet is $13,338.85 which is really amazing. Angel has a coin drop in Ucluelet on Wednesday at the Ucluelet Co-op in the afternoon, where she will be accepting donations and selling Variety Gold Heart Collector Pins. She’ll also be emptying her many coin tins that are placed in many businesses in each community and will present this coming Friday’s total on the Variety Show of Hearts Telethon next Sunday morning.

I thank each of you for helping Angel to reach her goal. She won’t reach the $100,000 this year but it’s a long term goal and she’s well on her way to getting there. Thus far, over the past 4 years she has helped her community to raise $45,000.00 for Variety’s Kids.

Way to go Alberni Valley and Westcoast Communities.

Clippers 7, Dogs 2. Dogs @ Capitals tonight.

U-G-L-Y.

That's the best way to describe the Dogs 7-2 loss in Nanaimo last night. While the Dogs win-loss record isn't pretty this season, they haven't lost more than a couple where they looked as bad as they did last night. At times the group looked out of sync, unfocused, disinterested....etc.

So, as I said, it was ugly.

As I've also said before - it's not how you fall, it's how you get back up that matters.


The Dogs have shown on several occasions recently that they are capable of bouncing back from a less than stellar effort. And that's a good thing, because it won't be an easy one tonight as they are down to the Island Savings Centre in Duncan to take on the Cowichan Valley Capitals.

Hello and Happy Friday!

I received some pretty exciting news last night in the form of an email from the Tourism Queensland people - they have ACCEPTED MY VIDEO APPLICATION for the "Best Job in the World" contest that I talked about here on the blog a while back.

I was starting to get a little worried because I submitted my video about two weeks ago and I still hadn't heard anything yet..FINALLY I got the word that I am IN.

NOW I just need all of your help to vote for me! While the Tourism Queensland people select the 50 that make the first cut, and then the 10 finalists, the PEOPLE also get to pick one entry, a "wild card" so to speak, so the more votes the better!

I have taken a look at lots of the videos submitted already, and save for a couple here and there that don't seem to have much effort or know-how put into them, they are all fantastic.

I can't ask you to vote for me because I'm the best or my video is the best or yaddah yaddah. Plenty of entries and videos are all worthy of the job. It's just a matter of opinion now I guess.

I hope in YOUR opinion I'm the guy for the job. I covered the criteria in the video - the successful applicant needs to be media friendly, adventurous, a BLOGGER, fun, and someone who enjoys swimming/snorkeling/fishing/bush wacking - which I do!

I think that I am perfect for the job!

I am an amateur film maker at best, but I did put a tonne of work into this baby. Thanks to everyone who gave me ideas or feedback or worked the camera!

Burrows buries, back on the bandwagon....Alberni Wrestling hosts Invitational this weekend...

The mats go in to cover the ice this weekend at the Alberni Valley Multiplex....

The 26^th Annual Alberni Invitational Wrestling Tournament is scheduled for the Alberni Valley Multiplex February 5-7, 2009. The Invitational will bring over 600 competitors from all over B.C. to the Valley for three days of intense wrestling action in five different age groups .

The Alberni Invitational is widely considered the most prestigious high school wrestling tournament in B.C. and has received recognition across Canada. The tournament begins on Thursday, February 5th with weigh-ins for boys and girls all 3 divisions at 7:00 p.m. at Glenwood.

The Alberni Invitational tournament action will run all day on Friday, February 6^th from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Alberni Valley Multiplex. There are age groups for School Age (gr 6-8), Cadet (grade 9-10) and Juvenile (grade 11-12). There will be lunch (11:30 am-12:30 pm) and dinner (4:30-5:30 pm) breaks. An Elementary Division returns this year with over 100 local youngsters expected to participate. The Elementary division runs from 12-3 pm Friday.

Friday night at 7:00 p.m. will feature the ever-popular semi-finals. Friday night will also feature the Open division where alumni and college wrestlers can test their skills. The new North Island College team will have wrestlers entered. The conclusion of the rest of the preliminary matches in the age class divisions will begin Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. Medal matches will start at about 10:00 a.m. Saturday morning. The finals in the Schoolboy/girl division (grade 6-8) and Cadet (gr 9-10) will start at noon on Saturday. The Juvenile (grade 11-12) finals start at 2:30 pm on Saturday and wrap up by 3:0 p.m. There is not cost for spectators for the preliminaries and the finals are by donation.

Not only do local fans have an opportunity for some great competition at the Invitational, you also will once again see very competitive Alberni wrestlers. The ADSS Boys team is currently ranked #4 in the province and will likely battle it out with over 60 other schools for the team title in the Juvenile and Cadet divisions. These teams include #1 ranked Guildford Park of Surrey and other top teams such as Abby Traditional and Rick Hansen Secondary both of Abbotsford.

In the Juvenile Girls division ADSS is ranked # 2 in BC with Carson Graham of North Vancouver #1. Port Moody Secondary and WJ Mouat Secondary round out the top 4 girls teams. In the Schoolboy/girl division Alberni will have strong teams from Neill and Dunn Middle Schools and both schools should be in the top 10. Ucluelet Secondary will also have wrestlers in most age divisions.

It will be an exciting few days of wrestling action in the place many observers call the Wrestling Capital of BC – Port Alberni!

TEAM 1040-Vancouver’s All Sports Radio, is proud to announce that Michael Buble will appear as a guest Colour Commentator alongside John Shorthouse this Saturday, February 7^th as the Vancouver Canucks host the Chicago Blackhawks at The Garage

Aside from being a Grammy and Juno Award-winning performer, Burnaby native Michael Buble is a huge hockey fan. Last month, one of Michael’s dreams came true when he was named a minority owner of the Vancouver Giants. At the time of the announcement, he said, "It (hockey) is a huge part of my life, and I'm sentimental about it, actually."

Michael will be sitting in for long time Canucks colour commentator Tom Larscheid. Tom will be in Logan, Utah this weekend to be inducted into the Utah State University Hall of Fame. Tom played football at Utah State from 1959-1961 and was one of the most electrifying offensive players in the team’s history. Tom was a star running back and kick-returner, a two-time first-team all-Skyline Conference performer and a two-time honorable mention All-American. Tom still holds school records for rushing yards per attempt for both a season and career.

I'm sad to unofficially report that Brian Kang won't be entering the BCHL's record books. Or at least, he won't be a record holder.

Here are Kang's stats.

I say "unofficially" because there's no word from the BCHL offices on this matter. I certainly understand that the record book isn't priority #1, but at least returning my phone call would be appreciated. Hey, maybe they're busy....?

There was plenty of talk over the last while regarding "Kanger" and his chance to break the BCHL All-time regular season games played record this year. I knew from the very beginning that something didn't sound right with that though. Why? Because I remembered all this going on already in the 2006-2007 season, when Sean Overton (then with the Nanaimo Clippers) was breaking the games played record. I went and checked the BCHL Record Book at that time, and Rob Milliken was listed as the record holder with 273 games played with Powell River and Kelowna. A check of the record book this season STILL lists Milliken as the record holder, not Overton.

NOW - here's the asterisk. Overton ALSO played in 2002-2003, the year BEFORE the current BCHL Executive began their tenure, and the year before the current version of the league website began operating.

A quick call to my colleague Dan Marshall, the play-by-play voice of the Nanaimo Clippers, got me the answer I was looking for. Man Danno is good.....

Overton played 53 games in 2002-2003 with the Penticton Panthers.

So - Add that to his 231 games listed on his current career stats and you get 284. The league record holder for games played. "Unofficially" of course. Brian Kang would be second on the all time list, as far as I can gather. Unless there's some question into Overton's numbers.

Anyway - there ya go.

This year’s show will be taking on more of a telethon style. We will be stopping the show during musical arrangements to accept your cash or cheque donations on stage. We will be announcing the running total as it climbs with the donations that come in throughout the day. We will also be having a few short speeches which will be occurring throughout the day. We are very fortunate to have Evan “the Hammer” Hammond and Jolie McMullan, radio personalities from 93.3 The Peak FM as the event emcee’s. The Alberni Valley Bulldogs will be in attendance from 130 until 330pm so come on out and meet your favorite player. There will be a Silent Auction and a Variety of Prizes event and Variety Gold Heart Pins can be purchased as well. Hot dogs, chips and drinks can be purchased at the event. Admission is by donation to the Variety Coin Drive so come on out and help Angel and Jelly Bean to help Variety’s Kids.

Yikes. Not the coach that I thought would get the axe on Monday...How long will Vigneault stay around? "Hired to be fired" they say...

Senators call news conference, expected to announce Hartsburg's firing


OTTAWA - It looks like the Ottawa Senators will be making another coaching change.

The team has called a morning news conference amid a TSN report that Craig Hartsburg has been fired.

A Senators spokesman wouldn't comment.

Hartsburg's tenure with the team lasted just 48 games. He's the third different coach the Sens have had since they appeared in the Stanley Cup final in 2007.

Ottawa currently sits 13th in the Eastern Conference standings with a 17-24-7 record.

Hartsburg previously served as a head coach in Chicago and Anaheim.

We've made it, several hours early to the South Surrey Arena. A perfect chance to get some blogging done!

A tough one for the Dogs last night as they dropped a 3-2 decision in Powell River. Big credit to the Dogs for bouncing back after the Kings took a 3-1 lead late to make it 3-2. Sadly, the comeback fell short.

Bulldogs 2 Chiefs 1 in 2OT

That's for you Amos!After a scoreless first, the Chiefs took a 1-0 lead into period three on a Brad Goss shorthanded marker.

Five minutes into period three Brian Kang ripped a one-timer stop shelf after a great Chris Moulson steal-and set-up effort for a 1-1 tie.

Adam Hout was the double overtime hero, getting an ugly one (that never looked so pretty) to go in from behind/beside the net off the skates of Joe Rodwell.

The Dogs are in Powell River taking on the Kings tomorrow (Friday) with the pregame on THE PEAK at 6:45pm and the puck drop and all the play-by-play at 7:00pm

Win one for Amos night!

It was a tough and sad day today, as I attended the funeral of Judy Amos, mother of Bulldogs Assistant Equipment Manager Jamie Amos.

Just plain tough for me to see Jamie and his loved ones hurting. I know what I'm going through is no where near what faces them now, so please throw a prayer their way if that is your thing.

A very nice and classy move by the entire Alberni Valley Bulldogs organization to attend the service today to support Jamie.

From the ownership to the office and support staff to the coaching staff and volunteer crew - and of course the entire roster, everyone was there.

And a good number of the extended Bulldog family was there too. Jamie is so incredibly loved. It's an amazing thing to see and be a part of, but everyone that knows Jamie knows it is deserved.

I would have been understanding, but upset, should the team have decided not to come today, due to it being game day and all. Sometimes, there are things much bigger than the game. Way to go Bulldogs.

Just to clarify -I haven't heard if the team isn't calling it "Win one for Amos night" or not, I am just hoping, and think that this is what the rallying cry will be.

Grizz 6, Dogs 1...Old Time Hockey? Happy Birthday - Paul Henderson.

Maybe it's my fault for talking about Slap Shot and putting a video up here yesterday? Nah!



I never need an excuse to put some Slap Shot stuff up on here..

The Bulldogs are still without a win against the Victoria Grizzlies this season after a 6-1 Grizz win last night. After a scoreless first period, Robert Lindores gave the Dogs a 1-0 lead early in the second. The score stayed that way until a controversial Grizz goal tied it at 1-1 just past the halfway mark of the game. I certainly couldn't tell from my position in the booth if it was in, and it appeared the referee couldn't tell either from his position right at the net if it was in or not as the puck went up in the air before being stopped by Colin Rundell. The referee was in great position but didn't make an immediate call whether it was goal or no goal. After consultation with his linesmen, it was ruled a goal.

The Grizzlies would then strike twice in just over a minute late in the period to blow a 1-1 game open into a two goal advantage at 3-1. Unlike Sunday afternoon, where the Dogs recovered from two quick goals against to fight back, they couldn't muster a comeback this time. They kept the score close with a good penalty kill throughout the majority of the third, but the Grizzlies finally built their lead to three goals with just under six minutes left. After two more Dogs penalties, and also two more Grizzlies goals, the game got more than a little heated with several fights, including one situation that looked like it was going to develop into a full-scale line brawl. Credit to the linesmen and the players on the ice for it not getting that far.

Old Time Hockey. As Don Cherry says - It's not everyone's cup of tea.

Next up for the Dogs is a date with the Langley Chiefs Thursday at the Pound.

Paul Henderson 1943-
hockey player, was born on this day. Henderson played junior with the Hamilton Red Wings, then moved to the Detroit Red Wings, before being traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs (1968-74). Henderson retired in 1981 after stints with the WHA Toronto Toros/Birmingham Bulls and the NHL Atlanta Flames. He scored the winning goal in the Canada/Soviet Union Summit Series on Sept 28, 1972, with 34 seconds remaining.
