Dogs 5 Eagles 4 in double OT

What a wild game as the Dogs beat the Eagles on a highlight reel winner by David Dziurzynski as he walked to the net and beat three Eagles and then Vinny Lessard on the rebound.

Surrey lead 1-0 after one but the Dogs were a much different team in the second period tying it up just 13 seconds in as Warren Muir banged in his own rebound off a great pass from Sam Mitchell. It was 2-1 Dogs when Johnny Rogic put the carom off the end boards past Lessard off a Luke Fenske one-timer set up by Ryan Corbiell.

The game would get a little crazy with penalties after this point. During a 4 on 4 situation Erik Cooper tipped a point shot home for his first goal to tie the game at 2-2. The Eagles then went to a 5 on 3. When one of the penalties was up Warren Muir jumped out of the box to get in on a breakaway that was stopped by Lessard. Muir would get his rebound and come out front only to be stopped again by Lessard. When the whistle blew Muir was awarded a penalty shot which caught me by surprise. Lessard would again come up with the save to keep the game at 2-2. The Eagles would go up 3-2 on an Andrew Wallace power play goal, with Mitch MacMillan being ejected from the game on a check from behind as the Dogs lost the leagues leading goal scorer for the remainder of the game. After another 5 on 3 kill the Dogs ended the period on the power play, where Kevin Ross put a slapper from the right point past Lessard for a 3-3 tie after two.

The Dogs would get a 5 on 3 of their own in the third, but they couldn't connect on it. On the 5 on 4 Warren Muir got his second of the game to make it 4-3, somehow fighting the puck to the net and beating Lessard on a great hard working goal. Jamus Lane would tie it shortly afterwards as it was 4-4 with eight minutes to play.

Penalties were again a problem for both teams, with each club getting a chance to go ahead on the man advantage. Both penalty kills would hold the score at even. Then, with 2:22 to play Tyler Morley was given four minutes for kneeing for a hit on Mark MacMillan. The Eagles penalty kill would come up big with Lessard making some big stops and the Eagles doing a good job of getting in shooting lanes. The Dogs came as close as a Kevin Ross shot off the post, and another puck at the side of the net that went in but it was ruled no goal as the net was dislodged.

The game would end on a beauty as previously mentioned by big Dave Dziurzynski.

The Alberni Valley Bulldogs announce 89 F Mitch MacMillan has committed to Northeastern University in the fall of 2010.

The 20 year old forward from Penticton, British Columbia is having an outstanding start to this years BCHL season, currently leading all BCHL players in goal-scoring with 19 goals in 20 games.

“Mitch is a quality person, who has worked extremely hard for this opportunity, I am proud to see Mitch accomplish his goal of attaining an NCAA Division I scholarship” comments Bulldogs GM/Head Coach Nolan Graham.

Founded in 1898, Northeastern University is a private research university located in the heart of Boston, MA. Northeastern is recognized as an excellent academic and athletic institution.

The Northeastern Huskies hockey team competes in Hockey East, the nation's premier league. The Dogs are back at it tonight when the Coastal Conference leading Surrey Eagles are at the Pound.

Our pregame show kicks off at 6:45 with the play-by-play to follow at 7:00

You may remember how the only other meeting of the season at the Dog Pound between these teams ended....

The Dogs hope it's not as interesting tonight. But don't expect the Eagles to be an easy foe at the end of a roadtrip. They have won three in a row, and they'll be out for payback after the Dogs beat them 3-0 in Surrey last Friday.

The Eagles are playing their third game in three days after wins last night in Duncan (4-3), and Thursday night in Powell River 4-1. After the loss to the Dogs last Friday, they hit the road on Sunday and beat Merritt to start their current roll of three straight wins.

Tonight's first intermission guest is Bulldog forward Jesse Halikas. Our second intermission guest is Cowichan Valley Capitals play-by-play voice Alf Orton.

I'm fired up to be back at the Pound for the first time in a while!

Dogs 4, Grizzlies 2

A great start by the Dogs wins this one, as they jump out to a 3-0 lead on goals from Warren Muir, Kevin Ross, and Jesse Halikas. The Grizzlies made it 3-1 before the period was out.

There was no scoring in the second period, and no scoring through the first half of the third before Johnny Rogic iced it with a shorthanded goal with nine minutes to play. The Grizzlies made a game of it at 4-2 with five minutes to play but that would be as close as they would get.

Final score 4-2 Dogs, final shots 35-29 Dogs. Frank Slubowski gets the win Richie Virtanen gets the loss. Colin Fernandez was great in relief after Virtanen gave up the first three.

Next up, the Surrey Eagles Saturday at the Pound.

The Grizzlies last played a week ago tonight. They were supposed to play Saturday at home against the Clippers but that game of course was postponed as the Grizzlies were ill.

Suspension handed down in Ben Fanelli hit...

The suspension has come down from OHL Commissioner David Branch. And it's a big one for Michael Liambas. The remainder of the regular season and any playoff games Erie qualifies for.

Holy smokes is it really 100 days until the Olympics?

Do you love them, hate them, or are you undecided? I respect and see the opinions on both sides of the coin.

But I love 'em.

I'm not telling YOU to love them. I just said two lines up I respect and see the opinions on both sides. So hate 'em if you want to. No one is stopping you.

I love BC and Vancouver being exhibited to the world. I love the biggest sports show in the world being here and being able to feel a part of it. I STILL remember Calgary in 88. And I was EIGHT years old.

I'll make a little guess, a little assumption that I'll never be able to prove or really know if I'm right or wrong. I bet that when the games come and the stories and excitement happens, many people on the hate 'em side won't be able to fight getting caught up in them.

I liken it to all the people that voted down the Alberni Valley Multiplex the first couple of times around. Granted it was before I was here in Port Alberni but believe me I've heard about it. I've heard about it because all of the YES people and the proponents of it tell me how so many of the NO people and people who were against it - are now season ticket holders. People who come to Bulldog games, who use the facility in some way shape or form, who come and watch their children and grandchildren play. And I've heard from lots of NO people as well who say they are now on for the ride and love the facility and everything it's done for the community, even if they couldn't see it before it was there in front of them and people were fighting tooth and nail to build the thing.

Here's hoping the Olympics will provide a positive ending that outweighs the negatives and maybe what should have been done and shouldn't have been done and what was wrong and etc etc etc.

Chiefs 6 Dogs 3

This one started great for the Dogs as they took a 2-0 lead in the first on two Mitch MacMillan power play goals on Matt Green who would get the hook.

The game changed in the second as the Chiefs came out flying and had the Dogs contained in their end. The Dogs had two players without sticks in their own end. Kevin Ross recognized the situation and got the puck against the end boards and did what appeared to be a magnificent job of freezing the puck to get a whistle. But referee Trevor Hansen was apparently adamant against blowing the play dead even through 30 seconds of the puck not moving. Although I'm sure it looked different from the Langley side of the puck. The end result - a goal just seconds later that trimmed the gap to 2-1. The Chiefs dominated the rest of the period, getting two goals from Jordan Sims and a tic-tac-toe beauty from Brandon Thompson to lead 4-2. The Bulldogs stopped the bleeding with a David Dziurzynski goal to make it 4-3 into the third.

Playing their third game of the weekend, the Dogs did a great job to come out and generate chances in the third, the best of which being a Rogic breakaway that was poked by goaltender Andrew Walsh onto the stick of Matt Hatch in the slot. Hatch would have an open net but was denied by Walsh, who got his glove out from the seat of his pants to make a game saver. The Dogs would have a 5 on 3 power play in the third period to tie the game that they would certainly want back, as the Chiefs penalty kill made it look easy.

The Chiefs would kill the Dogs chances with a power play goal with 3:31 to play to make it 5-3 and that was all she wrote.

The Dogs pulled their goalie for an extra attacker in the final minute but the Chiefs rubbed some salt into the wound for the 6-3 final.

A good effort for the Dogs that just ran out of gas and came up short.

Four out of six points is nothing to hang their heads about.

Dogs @ Chiefs to finish trip, Olympic Torch to Port Alberni THIS MORNING!

The Alberni Valley Bulldogs finish their three-in-three roadie this afternoon with a visit to the brand new Langley Events Centre to face the Chiefs.

The Dogs have gone 2 and 0 so far, which is pretty darn good. But 4 points out of 6 just doesn't have the same ring at six out of six does so I hope they are ready to play a full 60 minutes from because they will certainly need it against Chiefs.

Langley has been sitting and waiting for the Dogs this weekend, last playing on Thursday night to a 5-5 tie with Powell River. Which is why the Dogs have to be going from the beginning. Playing comeback hockey on the end of a road trip against a rested team isn't a recipe for success.

Last night's win vaulted the Dogs to 4th in the Conference. A regulation win tonight would tie them with Langley for third.

Today we'll see what the team is really made of when it comes to guts and finding a way to win. The team has been in this position before, when they went in Vernon to face the defending National Champs to end their first Interior Roadie. The Dogs started that game great and got a lead, but lost it 30 seconds later. After that the Vipers never looked back. And the Vipers were playing all weekend, not resting like Langley. While the Dogs played well and dug deep in that game, they came up on the short end.

Hopefully today they can play a full 60 to come home with six points.

At precisely 11:04 a.m. on Sunday, November 1^st, the Olympic Flame will begin its journey through Port Alberni, on Redford Street at the foot of Galiano and San Mateo Drive. It will make its way along Wood Avenue, up Wallace to Kendall and will be carried into Bob Dailey Stadium at 11:22 a.m. by Community Torchbearer and local Olympian, Travis Cross, who will light the cauldron.

Following its departure from Bob Dailey Stadium, the torchbearers will make their way down Roger Street heading south on 10^th Avenue to Argyle Street and along Harbour Road to the Maritime Discovery Lighthouse where it will board First Nations canoes for the short paddle to the Harbour Quay. Following a short run to Kingsway, the torch will be carried aboard a logging truck along 3^rd Avenue to the Barclay Hotel by future Olympic wrestling hopeful, Isaiah Taylor. From the Barclay Hotel, the Olympic Flame will then continue its way along Gertrude Street to Johnston Road, Victoria Quay and on to River Road where it will continue its journey west to Tofino, being blessed along the way by both the Hupacasath and Tseshaht First Nations.

Local Olympic Torch Relay Committee Chair, Donna Brett, said “I am excited that the route has now been made public allowing our residents the opportunity to view the torchbearers from many places throughout our community”. She went on to add “It should be noted that intermittent road closures and traffic delays along the route can be expected, however, every attempt will be made to keep any delays as short as possible. Parking will be limited along the entire Torch Relay Route”. Please see attached for further details regarding parking and delays.

Mayor Ken McRae also commented on the route stating “this celebration encompasses everyone in our community and the torch route will allow as many people as possible to be a part of this historic event.”

A spectacular show anticipating the arrival of the Olympic Flame will commence at Bob Dailey Stadium at 10:00 a.m. This will feature many local talented performers, all excited to be a part of this once in a life time event. The afternoon will continue with free family events being offered at the Alberni Valley Multiplex and Echo Pool.

Dogs double Express..

The Alberni Valley Bulldogs won their second in a row overall and on this road trip with a 4-2 win tonight in Burnaby.

The Dogs made things maybe harder on themselves than they had to be as they had a 3-0 lead early in the second but they allowed the Express back into the game with a shorthanded goal and a 5 on 3 goal to make it 3-2 Dogs after two.

The AVB took a 1-0 lead just over two minutes into the game when Mark MacMillan and Mitch MacMillan raced away on a 2 on 0 breakaway. Mark did a perfect job of driving the net and faking a deke to his backhand before sliding the puck over to Mitch to score into the open net. It was 2-0 Dogs short of eight minutes into the game with Josh Mitchell and Kevin Ross setting up David Dziurzynski on the power play. Warren Muir continued his strong play as of late as he found the net early in the second off a Johnny Rogic power play set up for the 3-0 advantage.

The game was won on a big 5 on 3 kill for the Dogs with 10 minutes go to in the third where Frank Slubowski was solid and his defenders around him did a great job to clear loose pucks to hold the 3-2 lead.

Next up - the first ever game for the Dogs at the new Langley Event Centre tomorrow at 2pm to finish off the road trip. Get it all on THE PEAK starting with the pregame show at 1:45.

Way to go Dogs. Now do it again tomorrow!

Moriarty Receives George Percy Award PRESS RELEASE October 31st, 2009

Daniel Moriarty became cemented into the permanent history books at Harvard University this past spring. The former captain of the Alberni Valley Bulldogs enjoyed a successful freshman season and was honored by receiving the George Percy Award.

The George Percy Award is presented annually to the member of the Harvard freshman class whom best displays enthusiasm, sportsmanship, team spirit and loyalty. The award is voted on by teammates as well as the coaching staff.

The award was first presented in 1971. The award is named after George Percy, first marshal of the class of 1918, captain of the freshman and varsity hockey teams from 1914-17 and a member of the 1916 varsity baseball team.

After Harvard, Percy continued to show his outstanding qualities serving in the United States Marine Corps in both world wars and was awarded the Navy Cross for heroism in Iwo Jima, 1945.

As Moriarty prepares for another successful season at Harvard he continues to leave his mark on the places he’s been, just like George Percy did.

The Alberni Valley Bulldogs are proud to have Daniel Moriarty as an alumnus and congratulate him on winning the George Percy Award.

What a scary one this is. Saw this today on CBC during the Senators vs. Thrashers game.

The video isn't great at all....But what I see is a player TURNING. And getting really hurt. Doesn't appear the player left his feet to make the hit. Maybe charging, maybe an elbow a little high....But what's the end result if Fanelli doesn't turn? He sure doesn't hit the boards head first.

Just my 2 cents. Thoughts and prayers are with the player and his family, I'm not being insenitive to his situation. Just looking at it from both sides of it.

I mentioned players TURNING and showing their backs to an on coming checker on a Bulldog Broadcast a couple games back. I even went so far as to get the video, slow it down, and watch it over and over to make sure I wasn't wrong with saying the player turned into the check.

Kids - DONT TURN.

Nanaimo at Victoria Cancelled due to H1N1.....Dogs visit Express

Just wow....The H1N1 is some scary stuff. Scary enough to cancel the Grizzlies home date against the Clippers tonight...

Just wondering - whats the difference between the Grizzlies situation, and the Centennials situation. The Cents were very ill and apparently wanted to postpone last nights game against Vernon but they still played. Now Victoria hosting Nanaimo is called off. I`m sure there is more to the story.
I am back on the air tonight with the Bulldogs looking for two in a row on this road trip as they visit the Express in Burnaby. The Dogs were 3-0 shutout winners last night over the Eagles. The Express were 8-0 shutout losers in Penticton.

The Dogs would be very happy if the goose eggs stay on the same side again tonight of course, but they just want a win to keep the roll going. The Express might be a little fatigued, but the Dogs certainly cant take them lightly.

The Alberni Valley Bulldogs opened their three game road trip tonight with a 3-0 shutout of the Surrey Eagles.

The South Surrey Arena hasn't been kind to the Dogs, as before tonight their last win in Surrey was December of 2006.

The Dogs took a 1-0 lead late in the first when Matt Hatch found the rebound after Johnny Rogic was stopped by Vinny Lessard on a breakaway. The Dogs made it 2-0 past the halfway mark of the game when they again scored a rebound off a breakaway save by Lessard.

This time it was Kevin Ross sending Trent Dorais on a shorthanded breakaway. Lessard again made the save, but Warren Muir dug the puck to Dorais who slid it home to make it 2-0.

The goal was the third shorthanded marker by the Dogs this season.

It was then the powerplay that gave the Dogs a big cushion just minutes later as Matt Hatch put a perfect pass from behind the net to Johnny Rogic in tight where he one-timed it home. Warren Muir was again in on the play picking up an assist.

The Eagles had their chances in the third out shooting the Dogs, but they couldn't break the shutout as Slubowski was sharp and he was well supported.

Final shots were 28-24 Eagles. The Dogs were 1 for 5 on the powerplay while also scoring once shorthanded. The Eagles were 0 for 9.

A great start to the trip for the Dogs. Next up the Express tomorrow.
