What can be said here besides GO CANADA GO and let your PLAY do the talking!

The only thing I will say - if Canada comes out like they did against Russia, they won't be stopped. If they come out any other way, it's anybodies game.

OWN THE PODIUM!

What a race by Jasey Jay Anderson!!

We DO indeed OWN THE PODIUM!

Wow...And didn't the COC give up and say we couldn't a couple days back?

Good thing our athletes are like the rest of our common citizens, too stubborn to give up, just keep on fighting and working hard!

Had me jumping around yelling the way he started so slow and came back to win!

Awesome!

Crazy night in Quesnel as BCHL playoffs open....

Mike Milbury brings out the infamous shoe.....

It's kinda nice to be on the sidelines as the BCHL playoffs opened up last night and I was free to scream at the TV through an afternoon of curling (ouch, what heartbreak) and hockey (whew) as Canadian won one and lost one.

Quite the night in "The Vault" in Quesnel as they saw playoff hockey for the first time in 7 years.

It was "one attempt to injure too many" from the Quesnel side of the puck at least, as one of the Millionaires parents (allegedly former Bulldog Assistant Greg Holst) went to the Silverback back to apparently inform them what he thought of their tactics. One thing quickly led to another an according to the Quesnel play-by-play broadcaster the Silverbacks Trainer and at the very least one player left the bench to enter the stands (or "common area" at least) to accost said fan.

Yikes. Sounds like something that the BCHL office won't like too much, and it even sounds like something that the RCMP might not like to much which would make it something the BCHL office REALLY won't like.

Just plain WOW. I went and watched the archive on the BCHL website and you don't see much action during the incident, just someone approaching the bench and climbing the glass.

When the dust settled, it was a 4-3 OT win for the Mills, one of several lower seeds taking 1-0 series last night as the Nanaimo Clippers (3-2 winners in Victoria), the Surrey Eagles (4-3 OT winners in Langley), the Trail Smoke Eaters (6-3 winners in Westside) picked up road victories last night.

The Penticton Vees (4-2 over Merritt), the Powell River Kings (5-2 over Cowichan) were the other games last night.

All series resume for game 2 tonight.

The Bulldogs are still on the sidelines, but they are still staying active....don't forget the Open Practice/Family+Fan Appreciation Skate today at the Multiplex.

Fans are invited to come to the Multiplex watch the Dogs practice starting at 5:30 tonight. This will be a different experience for the guys, although they always have fans watching practice there will probably be much more tonight.

After that it's the "Skate with the Bulldogs" at 6:30.

Admission is BY DONATION WITH PROCEEDS GOING TO KIDSPORT PORT ALBERNI so please be generous!

Anyone making a donation will be entered in a draw to win Sam Mitchell's game worn 3rd jersey at the end of the skate!

SEMI FINAL FRIDAY, BCHL playoffs open today...Bulldogs Fan/Family Appreciation Skate tomorrow....

It's semi final Friday at the Olympic games as the USA takes on Finland, and Canada takes on Slovakia.

May the best teams win.

May Canada please be as MOTIVATED and PHYSICAL and DESPERATE as they were against Russia.

Amazing what happens when a team that good to begin with just plain WANTS IT MORE.

W O W.

Now, in the words of the Black Eyed Peas LETS DO IT AGAIN.

And of course the Canadian Women go for curling gold this afternoon. Go Bernhard rink!!

The BCHL playoffs kick off tonight. Of course the Bulldogs and Vernon Vipers are on the sidelines on the Coast and in the Interior as they enjoy a round 1 bye until round 2 opens March 9th.

Any predictions?

The Bulldogs are trying to keep busy, and keep the fans and the community interested though various events, including tomorrows Open Practice and Family/Fan Appreciation Skate.

Alberni makes RBC shortlist!

WOW EXCITING NEWS!!!

Hammer

For Immediate Release….

Alberni Short Listed For The 2012 RBC Cup

The Alberni Valley Bid Committee for the 2012 RBC Cup is pleased to announce that the community's bid has been selected to the short list of candidate cities from across Canada. Alberni joins Humbolt Saskatchewan, Fort McMurray Alberta and Kingston Ontario in the next step of the Hockey Canada selection process.

The RBC Cup is the Junior A Hockey Championship of Canada. It brings together the winners of the four regional play downs - BC/Alberta, Saskatchewan /Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec/Maritimes along with the host team in a five team national tournament.

Bid Committee Chair Tom McEvay is optimistic about their chances. "We have put together a strong bid package thanks to the work of many people. We know that our community has a tremendous amount of credibility with Hockey Canada after the success of the 2009 World Under 17 Hockey Challenge and we also realize that the outstanding season being had by the Alberni Valley Bulldogs has raised their national profile considerably. "

The next phase in the selection process will be formal presentations by the four bid communities to Hockey Canada in Calgary on March 17th. McEvay and committee member Ron Paulson will be joined by Bulldogs President Andy Oakes as they represent the local bid committee in Calgary. The final announcement is expected in May.

McEvay added that "the support our community gives to the Bulldogs and to all events of this magnitude is well chronicled across Canada. We encourage everyone to continue this support and fill the Multiplex for the upcoming Bulldogs playoff games. We are up against some stiff competition from three great hockey towns but we are confident that we have every chance of being the successful bid."

Full Coastal Award Winners....

Congrats to all winners and nominees!

Alberni Valley's MacMillans amongst
those tabbed for Coastal Awards
BURNABY, BC -- February 24, 2010

-- A foursome of Alberni Valley Bulldogs were
recognized for outstanding seasons today when the British Columbia Hockey League
announced its 2009/10 Coastal Conference awards winners.

Bulldogs' forward Mitch MacMillan was named the Coastal Conference Most Valuable
Player. MacMillan led the league in goals with 61 and paced all Coastal scorers with 93
points, while also becoming the first BCHL player since Kyle Turris to score 50 goals in
50 games or less.

Other Alberni Valley players to receive awards included Mark MacMillan, who was named
the Coast's Rookie of the Year following a season that saw the 18-year old finish ninth in
BCHL scoring with 80 points.

Bulldogs' defenceman Kevin Ross was named a co-winner of
the conference's Most Sportsmanlike Player award with Cowichan Valley Capitals forward
Mike Hammond.

There was also a tie for the Coast's Top Defenceman, as Powell River's Mat Bodie and
Victoria's Jordan Heywood split the award. Bodie picked up 42 points in his second BCHL
season while also captaining Team Canada West to a silver medal at the 2009 World
Junior A Challenge in Summerside, PEI. Heywood finished the season with 51 points and
tied for the league lead in game winning goals by a defenceman with four.

Alberni Valley Bulldogs head coach Nolan Graham picked up the conference's Coach of
the Year nod after leading his club to a 53-point improvement in the standings and a first
round playoff bye. The Bulldogs went from last to first on the Coast under Graham in his
first season as a head coach in the BCHL.

Too bad Frank Slubowski was shut out, but I know he's happy for his teammates, who would be the first to say that he just as easily could have won either of them!

OFF TO THE OLYMPICS, Tom Brokaw explains Canada to Americans, BCHL Awards out today..

I'm joining up with the Bulldogs today as they head over to Vancouver to "soak up" some of the Olympic spirit.

What else to do as a team when you have a couple weeks off!

A cool idea by the coaching staff to get the team out as a group to have some fun.

Don't worry, they'll be working hard to keep focused during the bye....you can't practice ALL the time though.

I'm looking forward to seeing some Olympic Hockey for the first time in my life.

Right now, it's the Swedes vs the Czechs. I'm working on Canada vs Russia, which would be the experience of a LIFETIME!

This has been emailed to me about 50 times over the last week. What a great job by Tom Brokaw...

Don't forget the BCHL Awards announcement sometime today.

The Dogs are nominated 7 times:

Mitch MacMillan and Frank Slubowski for MVP.

Frank Slubowski and Mark MacMillan for Rookie of the Year

Kevin Ross for Top Defenceman and Most Sportsmanlike Player

Nolan Graham for Coach of the Year.

The player awards are all way to close to call..the coach of year award?

They've had that one engraved with "Nolan Graham" for a quite a while now....just in my humble opinion of course!

And last but not least don't forget the Fan/Family Appreciation Skate with the Bulldogs on Saturday!

League Award Nominees Out, Dogs with 7 nods...

The BCHL came out with their Award Nominees today, and the Dogs are all over the place. Cool stuff!

The BCHL splits their awards up by conference, nominating three players for each award from each Conference.

For the Dogs in the Coastal:

Mitch MacMillan and Frank Slubowski up for MVP.

Slubowski is also up for Rookie of the Year honours with Mark MacMillan.

Kevin Ross is a double nominee along with Slubowski, as he's up for Top Defenceman honours along with Most Sportsmanlike Player.

And of course Nolan Graham is up for Coach of the Year.

The Penticton Vees are tied the Bulldogs as they also have 7 nominees on the Interior side.

So who's missing? Anyone surprised that the league leading Vernon Vipers only have 1 nomination, for Mark Ferner for Top Coach?

The full list can be found on the BCHL website HERE

Chiefs 3 Dogs 1

The Bulldogs salute their fans for their support through the 2009-2010 regular season

It wasn't the game the Dogs wanted to go into a lengthy break with, as the Langley Chiefs were the better team throughout in the 3-1 win.

As Head Coach and GM Nolan Graham said on the postgame "we weren't horrible and we did do some good things. We had some great performances from a collection of guys......although there were plenty of areas we need to be better"

When the topic was brought up about how maybe losing wasn't such a bad thing heading into a long break, Nolan said that we had almost echoed the words from the dressing room.

The Dogs have to turn this into a motivational tool. The ugly taste of losing will stay in their mouths for some time, even longer than the opening night 9-1 loss in Powell River that they had a week to think about before Game 2.

The brightest light from the game has to have been Frank Slubowski. If not for his play in the second period, the Chiefs would have had a lead much earlier than the third period as he was terrific in the second period as the Chiefs out shot the Dogs 11-4.

The line of Hatch, Rogic, and Lewis was certainly missing, but at the same time it gave everyone a chance to play and in the end that will be nothing but a positive for those individuals and the team as a whole.

Now, it's off to the Banquet today!

Regular Season ends with game 60 as Dogs host Chiefs

What a picture again on yet another amazing day in the Alberni Valley!

One of my new responsibilities at work is to bring our Peak Cruiser to all Bulldog home games, which gave me the chance to take the cool picture.

The regular season ends tonight and over two weeks without game action begins until the Dogs finally play again on March 9th, game 1 of round 2 of the playoffs.

With the long layoff looming it's all about heading into the break on that oft-mentioned "good feeling"

The Dogs will need to be ready to "bring it" as the Langley Chiefs no doubt be very motivated in what is also their final game of the season.

Points mean nothing to the Dogs as they have broke that franchise record last night, and they can climb no higher than their current position of 3rd overall in the BCHL.

Points are HUGE for the Chiefs as they are trying to secure home ice advantage through their first round playoff match up with Surrey.

Catch the pregame show tonight at 6:45 with the puck drop at 7:00pm.

Tonight's first intermission guest is Evan Hammond. Yes, ME.

It's a tradition that started a couple years back, where on the last game of the season after interviewing the guys all year for 59 games, one of the guys interviews me for game 60.

So tonight Matt Hatch will be your first intermission host, I will be the guest. Should be some fun stuff as Matt is a very personable guy!

Former Bulldog Andrew Ella - now playing at Nichols College -will be my second intermission guest.

Andrew scored one of the most memorable goals in Bulldog history, with people hanging off the rafters in the Dog Pound.

And last but not least don't forget the Open Mic and Autograph session after tonight's game at Boston Pizza!

AND the 2010 Awards Banquet tomorrow afternoon, get your tickets at the Dogs office!

Dogs win 19th straight on the road, 9th straight overall, set franchise record..

What a picture this one is! Thanks to NEWF for the great shots!

In a night when the depth of the team was evident with Diziurzynski, MacMillan, MacMillan and Ross out of the line up it ended up being a dream game for Affiliate Player Evan Richardson as he scored two goals including the OT winner in his first BCHL game in his home town to send the Dogs over the Clippers.

A franchise record for points for the Bulldogs as they top the Clippers for the fourth straight time, and the fourth in four tries this season at the Frank Crane Arena.

It's the 19th in a row on the road, a league record.

It's the 92nd and 93rd points earned this season, which also breaks the franchise record of 91 set in 2005-2006.

What a showing by all the Bulldog fans that made their way down to the Frank Crane. Two busses and countless others cheered the guys on all night.

Busy weekend for Bulldogs, for S'Port Alberni....

Too much to fit into one title.

The Dogs have just two games left in the regular season. Game 59 of 60 goes tonight at the Frank Crane Arena as the Bulldog Bus - and two busses of volunteers and supporters - leave the Valley and head over the hump.

This is a meeting of two hot teams. The Bulldogs have won 8 straight, the Clippers have won 4 straight.

The Bulldogs have won three straight games against Nanaimo, and all three games in Nanaimo this season.

The Clippers will be playing their final game of the regular season tonight before the playoffs begin on Tuesday so you know they will be coming out fired up.

The Dogs need to come out that way as well or it could be a long night.

Bulldogs PA Announcer (and Alberni Chrysler Salesman) Charles Mealey will join me to provide colour commentary.

Catch the pregame show at 7:15 with the play-by-play at 7:30.

The Dogs finish the home portion of their schedule tomorrow when the Langley Chiefs are in town.

As I mentioned yesterday, Dave Koszegi Re/Max is the game day sponsor and they will be giving away some cool R/C toys. See yesterday's post for more info!

And there is also this important fundraiser

The Alberni Valley Bulldogs, The Dave Koszegi Team, and Angel Magnussen ask you to bring your spare change to Saturday night’s home game to donate to the family of Amber Humphries-Jones. Amber is a 9 year old Alberni Valley girl who is currently at BC Children’s Hospital. Amber suddenly developed a rare neurological disorder in late January and will likely remain in the hospital for many months.

Before you come to cheer on the team this Saturday night please fill your pockets with spare change and bring it to donate to one of the Bulldog’s biggest fans, little Amber Humphries–Jones.

The Alberni Valley has well earned the title “Community With A Heart.” Please help us show Amber and her family that we care deeply and are holding each of them in our hearts.

Lastly -don't forget that the Dogs are hosting and open mic, meet and greet, and autograph session at Boston Pizza after the game so be sure to head down!

From the "S'Port Alberni" front, here's the other local sports action over the weekend....Hopefully you can get out to cheer on our teams!

First up is the Midget Rep Female team in action Saturday morning at the Multiplex in the Island Finals at 11:45. This is the first time that the locals have made the Island Finals since the team was formed in 2005. Give 'em heck girls!

Next up is the Midget Rep Bulldogs, opening defence of their Island Title at 2:30 on the big ice.

There is also Rugby up at the Pitch on Saturday....

Folks,

There are three games this Saturday at the Black Sheep facilities on Argyle St. The Ladies are hosting UVic starting at 11:00 am instead of the 11:30 am followed by the Div 1 Men at 12:30 pm hosting the Brit Lions. The Div 2 Men kickoff at 2:00 pm. Ferry times for the Brit Lions necessitate the earlier start. See you there.

Also - some golf action is up on Sunday. I went out and played the last three days, the course is in incredible condition!

This Sunday February 21st Bruce MacDonald will be hosting the Men’s Cherry Creek Shootout Tournament. This competition will be 18 holes of golf, with a shotgun start at 9AM. Lunch and the awarding of prizes takes place around 2 PM The format for the day will be four man teams with the two best net scores counting on each hole.

Please register in the Pro. Shop or by phoning 250-723-5422. You can enter as a foursome or as a single and you will be placed on a team. Don’t forget guests are always welcome at the Alberni Golf Club.

The cost for the day will be $30 for members and $40 for non members. Included in the price will be 18 holes of golf, lunch and prizes. This tournament is just a warm up for the start of the men’s club season opener, which happens on March 28..

Incredible weather, Dave Koszegi Re/Max Sponsors Saturday, BUSY weekend for Dogs

A look at Mt. Arrowsmith from Hole 13 on the Alberni Golf Club

Just incredible weather here the last couple of days as it feels like Springtime during Winter. Yes, we get some rain through the winter months. It doesn't bother me much, I say "you don't have to shovel it" but it certainly gets to some people. All it does for me is make me appreciate days like yesterday MORE when they come around.

I used the day well by getting some yard work done, and then getting out and playing a round at the Alberni Golf Club.

You may think "Hammer, you're nuts"

You may be right, but I wasn't alone, there were about 100 other crazies out there yesterday besides me!

About 4 or 5 other people had pictures of Mount Arrowsmith on their facebook pages yesterday...it was just that gorgeous out!

____________

Add MORE STUFF to the schedule this weekend...

Dave Koszegi.......Living, Working, Selling the Alberni Valley (who is also a strong friend and supporter of the blog) will be the "Game Night Sponsor" Saturday night as the Dogs wrap up their regular season on home ice.

With the Dogs being off for TWO WEEKS after Saturday night, it's not like you needed any more reasons to get to the rink....but now you have some anyway!

Here's the plan that Dave and his team have cooked up for Saturday....sounds fun!

Along with the tent and balloon outside the rink, and tattoos and balloons for the kids - are some pretty sweet prizes with the Airplane Toss!

1) Slash 2WD Short Course Trucks – Undeniably the most popular remote control truck in both rc racing or just having some backyard fun. This package comes complete with a digital controller that gives you peace of mind of never encountering any interference from another remote control truck. Perfect for our ‘wet coast’ weather as the truck comes waterproof out of the box. Rain or shine enjoyment for all ages.

2) Raminator 1/18 scale Monster Truck - Remote control fun in a small package. 2WD monster truck with a Dodge Ram monster truck body, measures 10-1/2 x 8 inches, has 4 wheel independent suspension and comes complete with a battery, controller and charger.

3) Vapor remote control flyer - Ever flown before? The ‘Vapor’ ultra micro 3 channel remote control flyer will get any non flyer, flying in minutes. Small enough and slow enough to be flown in a basement, garage, living room or other indoor spaces. Comes complete with everything you need to get up in the air. Fun and excitement for all ages.

Along with giveaways and prizes, is a very very worthwhile cause....

More Canadians watched first Medal than Super Bowl, "Around the Pound" tonight...

CTV says more Canadians watched Heil win Olympic medal than the Saints Super Bowl victory

VANCOUVER, B.C. — More Canadians watched Jennifer Heil win Canada's first medal at the Vancouver Olympics than the Super Bowl, according to CTV.

The host broadcaster said Saturday night's ladies moguls final at Whistler Mountain averaged 6.6 million viewers, with the audience peaking at eight million in the final minute.

The New Orleans Saint's Super Bowl win over Indianapolis earlier this month drew an audience of 6,017,000 on CTV.

The women's 3,000-metre relay semifinal in speedskating drew an average of 5.4 million over several consortium channels, CTV said.

Ski jumping, the first medal event of the Games, drew an average audience of 5.1 million Saturday morning. The Canada-Slovakia women's hockey game drew 2.5 million

CTV said 27 million Canadians - or some 80 per cent of the country - "watched some part" of the consortium coverage Saturday, up from the Day 1.

The Olympics are being broadcast by CTV, Canada's largest private broadcaster, and Rogers Media, a unit of cable TV, cellphone and media giant Rogers Communications Inc.

The two partners won the Vancouver Games TV rights in Canada by paying US$93 million, outbidding the CBC, which had broadcast the five previous Olympics.

In the United States, NBC paid US$820 million for the U.S broadcast rights.

"Around the Pound" the Bulldog Hockey Show - presented by Alberni Echo Toyota, is back tonight on 93.3 The Peak FM from 6 to 7pm. Get it live on our website at www.933thepeak.com if you are outside of Peak listening range.

Tonight's line up:

Bulldogs Head Coach Nolan Graham

Bulldogs Players Warren Muir and Trent Dorais

Nanaimo Clippers Voice Dan Marshall

And I'm still working on a rep from the Langley Chiefs!
