Clippers 4 Dogs 3

A tough one for the Dogs, as they looked Dog tired (pun intended) through the opening two periods as the short-staffed but well rested Clippers carried the play for the most part.

The Dogs opened the scoring just five minutes in, but gave up the equalizer less than a minute later.

It was still 1-1 until the midway point of the game when the Clippers went ahead 2-1. Two minutes later Sawyer Mick was given an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty by referee Ryan Benbow for yapping at a Clipper player. I can't remember the last time I saw a player get a single unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for speaking to another player, and not a ref...Let's just say if they called that all the time there would be 40 guys in the box.

The Clippers made the Dogs pay with a powerplay marker, and then struck shorthanded to go up 4-1. A Lars Hepso shorthanded goal in the dying seconds made it 4-2 and gave the Dogs life.

A good start to the 3rd period for the Dogs ran into a penalty and the Clippers carried the play and the Dogs looked out of gas again.

Cue Bailey, Josh, and Sobchak, as they came out with a great shift to get the momentum turned. Three shifts later they were back out and connected to make it 4-3. The Dogs dominated after that as they generated a ton of chances, including one off the post on the next faceoff as Liam Darragh busted down the wing, picked a loose Clipper stick out of his armpit, and put the puck right to the slot where Premont made a great first save and the rebound hit iron. That would be as close as the Dogs would get as their comeback ran out of time.

Some lessons no doubt learned today on the challenges of 3 games in 2 and a half days, and the need to play a full 60 minutes.

Dogs visit Clippers for Halloween affair....

It's been a successful weekend so far for the Bulldogs but nothing to celebrate just yet as they have one more big test coming up this afternoon at the Frank Crane Arena. It's the first visit there by the Dogs this season, their first visit since Game 6 of the Coastal Conference Semi Finals last year when the Dogs eliminated the Clippers.

I'm looking forward to seeing the newly renovated Frank Crane Arena.

It was a fun night for the Dogs last night as they scored a season high 8 goals. It also might have been too fun at times as they also gave up 4 to the Capitals. Casey Bailey wasn't happy with his third straight two goal game, this time he finally got the hat trick on a great set up by Tyler Berkholtz and Sam Mitchell. Bailey is shooting the puck incredibly well right now and it shows on the board as he has 7 goals in his last three games.

Player of the week material, BCHL?

Brandon Adams and Liam Darragh also scored their first career goals last night with two nice efforts.Throw in the pink jersey festivities and it was an all around fun night.

The Clippers are a banged up team, but if the Dogs take them lightly it will be an all-trick-no-treat afternoon for sure. The Clippers had last night off while the Dogs will be playing their third game in two and a half days. The Clippers are coming off a heartbreaking last-minute loss Friday here to Langley, I expect them to come out with a bee in their bonnet from the opening puck drop.
It's game three in the season series "Battle for the Rival Hammer" with the Dogs leading 2-0 after 4-3 OT and 5-4 wins at the Dog Pound earlier this season.
Catch the pregame show today at 2:45 with the puck drop and play-by-play to follow at 3:00pm on 93.3 The Peak FM. Bruce MacDonald will join me to provide colour and analysis.

My second intermission guest will be former Bulldog and now Providence Friar Jordan Kremyr

See you at the Frank Crane, or talk to you from there!

Frank Slubowski Commits to the University of Western
Michigan

Press Release
October 30th 2010

The Alberni Valley Bulldogs would like to announce
90 G Frank Slubowski has committed to The University
of Western Michigan for the fall of 2011.

The 20 year old goalie from Prince Rupert, British
Columbia backstopped the Bulldogs in 2009-2010 to a
franchise season in wins and points. Slubowski had a
record of 32 -10-1 with a 2.24
GAA and 91.94 save percentage.

So far in 2010-2011, Slubowski posts a 8-4-1 record with a
2.72 GAA and 91.48 save percentage.

"Frank is a quality person, who has worked extremely hard
for this opportunity, we are proud to see Frank accomplish
his goal of attaining an NCAA Division I scholarship"
comments Bulldogs GM/Head Coach Paul Esdale.

"Frank's story is a special one. He persevered through
tough times when he missed the whole 2008-2009 season with an injury. Franks
dedication and commitment has led him to this point. I have no doubt he will
develop into an outstanding college goalie, "adds Esdale.

The University of Western Michigan Broncos compete in the Central Collegiate
Hockey Association (CCHA) of the NCAA Division 1.
Tonight's first intermission guest will be Bulldogs Netminder Kiefer Giroux. Nanaimo Clippers Play-by-Play Voice Dan Marshall joins me in the second intermission show. The Clippers lost a heart breaker at home last night to Langley and now have tonight off to prepare for the Dogs tomorrow.

Dogs return home to host Capitals on Breast Cancer Awareness Night

It's the first home game for the Dogs after four straight on the road. It feels like more than that, doesn't it?

It's the Dogs and Capitals meeting again after a 4-3 double OT win for the Dogs last night in Duncan. The Dogs will certainly be looking for a better effort tonight, as according to Assistant Coach Kevin Hasselberg on the post game show last night "we were out worked"

It's hard not to agree with that, and to also agree with the thought that the Capitals might have deserved a better fate.

From the Dogs point of view, good teams just simply find a way to win. The "ways" for the Dogs last night were the great equalizers - goaltending and special teams. Frank Slubowski was great, and the Dogs went 2 for 4 on the power play and 4 for 4 killing penalties.

It will be good to be back in the friendly confines of the Dog Pound tonight.

Don't forget to WEAR PINK and also don't forget to be in attendance if you have entered your name at any of the sponsor locations around town to win one of the jerseys at the end of the game tonight!

Catch the pregame show at 6:45 tonight on 93.3 The Peak FM and online at www.933thepeak.com with Rick and I.

Halloween "beat down" has BCHL connection?

From our sister station, 106.9 The Wolf FM in Nanaimo....this is some GREAT STUFF! The worst David and I get up to on 93.3 The Peak is either my jokes or our discussions on the merits of a rocket launcher when it comes to aiding with tree cleaning jobs and fishing, haha!

Although there was this one time when I had to warn Dan Marshall about stealing Dan "the stats man" Tisserand!

PG-13 Warning?  Mild Language and Violence. I'm not good at rating these things, watch it without the kids first and make a call!

Dogs visit Caps tonight, host Caps for "Pink the Rink" tomorrow

It's the start of a big three-game weekend for the Dogs tonight as they visit the Caps at the Big Stick. Catch the pregame show on 93.3 The Peak FM at 7:15 with the play-by-play to follow at 7:30.

Bulldog Forward Liam Darragh will be my first intermission guest and former Bulldog Josh Bonar, now playing professionally in Hungary, will be my second intermission guest.

Capitals play-by-play voice Alf Orton has informed me that the famous Caps Club "pre-game buffet" is coming back tonight, just for "the great fans from the Alberni Valley" In all my years travelling to the BIG STICK, I have never had the buffet, although I have certainly heard lots of feedback from Dogs fans on how great the dinner is and how good the deal is.

Don't forget to wear pink tomorrow when the Dogs host the Capitals as they will be wearing their special pink jerseys!

 BURNABY, BC --
October 25, 2010 --

A total of eight British Columbia Hockey League players have been selected to compete for Team Canada West at the upcoming 2010 World Junior A Challenge, which runs from November 8th to 14th at the South Okanagan Events Centre in Penticton.

Team Canada West’s 22-man roster was announced Monday by Hockey Canada president Bob Nicholson and Canada West general manager Rylan Ferster. It includes three members of the Penticton Vees, two members of the Trail Smoke Eaters and one player each from the Victoria Grizzlies, Vernon Vipers and Westside Warriors.

Four of the BCHL players named to the team are returnees from the squad that won silver at the 2009 World Junior A Challenge in Summerside, PEI.

The eight BCHL representatives on Team Canada West are:

Madison Dias, F, Victoria Grizzlies — A returnee from last season’s silver medal-winning team, Dias is competing in his third season in the BCHL and has collected 10 points through 14 games. The Penticton, B.C. product set a career-high with 43 points last season and has committed to Cornell University for the 2011/12 season.

Grayson Downing, F, Westside Warriors — Another member of the team that won silver in Summerside a year ago, Downing is well on his way to a career high in points with 21 through 17 games. The Abbotsford, B.C. native is in his third BCHL season and has committed to the University of New Hampshire for 2011/12.

Joey Laleggia, D, Penticton Vees — A member of the 2009 silver medal-winning team, Laleggia leads all BCHL defencemen in points with 23 through 18 games. An Interior Conference Top Defenceman nominee as a rookie last season, the Burnaby, B.C. native recently committed to the University of Denver.

Mark MacMillan, F, Penticton Vees — A fourth round draft pick of the Montreal Canadiens earlier this year, MacMillan recently returned from an injury suffered in Penticton’s season opener. Last season’s Coastal Conference Rookie of the Year is coming off an 80-point campaign and a scholarship commitment to North Dakota.

Sam Mellor, F, Trail Smoke Eaters — Mellor is currently second in BCHL scoring with 35 points through 19 games on the heels of a 63-point rookie season. The Cranbrook, B.C. product has committed to attend the University of Alaska-Anchorage and was recently named to the Watch List for the 2011 NHL Draft.

Brendan O’Donnell, F, Penticton Vees — O’Donnell will be competing at the WJAC for the second consecutive year after being named to the team as a member of the Winnipeg South Blues last season. A sixth round draft selection of the Tampa Bay Lightning, O’Donnell has counted 11 points in 18 games with the Vees this season.

Travis St. Denis, F, Trail Smoke Eaters — Currently seventh in league scoring with 31 points in 19 games, St. Denis is already a three-year BCHL veteran at just 18-years old. The Trail, B.C. product is a Quinnipiac University commit who was recently named to Central Scouting’s Watch List for the 2011 NHL Draft.
Dylan Walchuk, F, Vernon Vipers — Walchuk leads the Vipers in scoring with 19 points in 18 games and played a key role in helping Vernon to their second consecutive RBC Cup championship in May as a rookie. The 18-year old is committed to Northern Michigan University for the 2011/12 season.

Canada West is pooled in Group B at the event and will face Switzerland and Russia in the round-robin portion of the tournament on November 8th and 10th respectively. The semi-finals will be held on Saturday, November 12th and the Gold Medal game will be televised nationally on TSN on Sunday, November 14th.

The team will have a pair of tune-up games prior to beginning of the event, as they will take on Canada East at the Wesbild Centre in Vernon on November 5th and the United States at the South Okanagan Events Centre on November 6th.

An interesting personal connection exists between one of the players on the roster and yours truly - and no, it's not former Bulldog Mark MacMillan. It's Mark's teammate with the Vees, Brendan O'Donnell.

Brendan's dad Art was one of the co-organizers of the "Normac Skills and Drills" Hockey School in my hometown of Flin Flon, Manitoba when I was just a young lad. Also working with the school was my Dad Cal, and Gardiner MacDougall - now Head Coach of the University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds. It never ceases to amaze me how small the world is, and the hockey world especially.

I remember my first foray as a businessman, or entrepreneur if you will, and it involves this hockey school.

One summer Art, my Dad, and Gardiner were at our house at the lake for what might have been a hockey school planning meeting. Mixed in was some relaxing on our deck and playing our Pitch and Putt Golf Course my dad made had around our house.

Somewhere along the course Art and Gardiner ran into my 10 gallon bucket filled with Hockey Pucks. They saw a money saving possibility, I saw a money making opportunity. At first I said no way to selling the pucks as I didn't really want to part with any of them. I had built up my collection through lots of hard work - mostly going to the Junior A Games early for the Pre-Game Warm Up so I could run and get the pucks that went over the glass. I would do pretty good some nights, getting 3 to 5 pucks. I used them for shooting around the yard, in the basement, out on the lake, when going to the rink for shinny, etc.

Art and Gardiner wouldn't be denied. They counter my refusal of their first offer - which I think was $10.00 or something like that - with an offer of a set of hockey cards. I thought "now we're talking" so we hashed out a deal - my pucks for a set of Box Set of 1990 or 1991 Upper Deck "Super Rookies" or something like that. I remember thinking I had struck pay dirt, not only did I get something for my pucks, I also went through them ahead of time and took all my favorite pucks with coloured logos out and kept them! Ha!

I'm sure the Upper Deck Box Set is still in my parents garage somewhere, maybe worth a couple of bucks too! Just some random memories for a Tuesday you hopefully got a kick out of!

One last thing before I go -

HOCKEY:  MIDGET A BULLDOGS QUALIFY FOR DIVISION 1

The Midget A Bulldogs will play their 2010-2011 regular season in Division 1 of the Vancouver Island Hockey Association.  The move up to the top division was confirmed when the VIAHA Executive met on Saturday October 23 to assign teams in the 24 team league to four divisions for the coming season.  It is based on the team’s winning record in placement games which included wins over Nanaimo M2 (12-1), Powell River (4-3), Comox M1 (6-2) and Comox M2 (8-2).  The only loss was a close game with Victoria Racquet Club when an early lead turned into a 5-3 loss.  Coach Brent Demerais says “The boys are doing well so far this season.”  The strength of Alberni Valley minor hockey is underlined by the fact that at least 9 players from this age group have moved on to Junior already and several members of the current Midget team are alternates for junior teams as well.

On the same day as the Executive meeting the team took on one of their new division rivals, Nanaimo M1 in an exhibition game at the Nanaimo Ice Centre.  Carson McCulloch got Alberni on the board first, getting behind the defence and roofing a shot from the slot at 9:27 of the opening frame.  A minute later Tyler Wilhem took a pass from Brady Janzen and scored from the top of the circle with a quick wrister to make it 2-0.  Nanaimo got a power play goal to open the second period, but the Bulldogs penalty kill continues to be effective allowing only that one while going shorthanded six times and even scoring one of their own during the last PK in the third period.  Bryan Read controlled the puck in the Alberni zone and passed to Colin Mowat at the far blue line.  Mowat’s shot from the circle had enough on it to trickle through the goalie’s five hole.  Read topped off the scoring with under ten seconds left on the clock, jamming the puck in at the right post for a 4-1 win.

The team plays their first league game away on October 30th versus Comox M1 at 4:45 PM.  They will be at home to Victoria Racquet Club on October 31st.  Game time 12:30 PM at Weyerhaueser arena.

Fun times on the road, "Around the Pound" live at Dolce Vita tonight,Video - Del Zotto takes out camera with shot

I would say it's good to be back, but I'd be half lying. Don't get me wrong it was great to be home last night, sitting on the couch chilling with my loved ones and relaxing. On the other hand, it wasn't good to have to be in here and on the air for six o'clock this morning, with an out of commission coffee maker to boot! Ouch!

The first big road trip of the season. It's always an interesting experience as you get to know the guys better, the staff better, and you get to watch the guys get to know each other better. You learn a few things I think about the identity and character of the team as well. A whole bunch of meals, a bunch of bus rides, some movies, and lots of idle chit chat to fill the time.

I'm not sure what the trip would have been like heading home if the Dogs hadn't pulled off the great win in Penticton on Saturday, but thankfully, we'll never know! It was a happy ride home, and a happy bunch of guys.

It was a pleasure to be with the team through the process. I know the guys better and I know Kevin Hasselberg and Chad Oliver better - two guys who are true pros dedicated to their craft who are fantastic editions to the hockey team - and great people at the same time. Chad was my roomie for the roadie - since we don't hate each other after 6 days on the road staying together, I'd call it a great success. I almost missed him last night haha!

Seeing Chad work up close over the trip I could tell he's a great trainer who knows his stuff and the team and the guys are lucky to have him.

It was also nice to meet some of the Bulldog parents and families, they are a huge motivator to me for how I do my job, and to see some of the parents and families of returning Bulldogs again.  And lastly, it was great to see some of the Bulldog family and fanbase from Port Alberni on the road! These guys are just supported so well, I hope they realize it.

Special thanks again to Mike and Laurie Hepso for their hospitality as they hosted a team dinner Thursday night, and thanks to all those that helped prepare it. NO THANKS at all to Casey Bailey, my ping-pong doubles partner. Just kiddin' Bails, we did our best!

I better stop now, so many thank-yous I'm starting to sound like I'm accepting an Oscar. I'd like to thank the Academy.....GONG.....

Sam Mitchell Overtime winner

It will sound better with play-by-play audio, but NOTHING can make it look any prettier. A savy play by Frank Riddle to control the puck to facilitate a change, a typical effort by Captain Trent Dorais to not lose a battle to enable Sam to get the puck, and what can you say about Sam's effort, nothing short of amazing as he beats two Vees wide before driving the net. A thing of beauty.

Dogs @ Vees tonight

A big one tonight as two teams
coming off tough losses meet - the Dogs lost 7-1 to the Warriors, the Vees lost 5-0 at home to the Vipers.

A victory for the Dogs and they pick up the elusive first road win, and they go home .500 with 3 out of 6 points. That sure sounds a lot better than 1 point.

Warriors 7 Dogs 1

The Dogs are still winless on the road after taking one on the chin tonight at Royal LePage Place.

The Dogs trailed 2-1 after one even though they out shot the Warriors 18-9.

The Dogs gave up a season high 5 powerplay goals in the loss.

Kiefer Giroux takes the loss giving up 5 goals before giving way to Frank Slubowski, but he certainly wasn't to blame for the loss.

A classy move I noticed by Warriors Captain Alex Grieve as when he scored his hat trick goal to make it 7-1 he called off the "fly by" of the bench to celebrate, instead just leading his team back to centre ice to drop the puck again. You don't see that very often.

I was a big fan of the Warriors BEFORE this game, and an even bigger fan after it. They have a great squad.

The Dogs are in Penticton to face the Vees tomorrow, who lost tonight to the Vernon Vipers on home ice by a score of 5-0.

It should be a good one tomorrow with two teams coming off bad losses having lots to prove.
