Crucial loss for Canucks, more local sports news.

Wow, how far from the truth was it yesterday when I pulled my "Luongo is out for the season" April Fools gag?

He certainly looked hurt last night, as the Canucks squandered a 2-0 lead to lose 4-2 to the Avalanche. To make matters worse, the Nashville Predators erased a 3-0 deficit to beat St. Louis 4-3 in OT. My buddy Jordin Tootoo scored. Nice to see that, but BAD TIMING TOOTS! Of course I'm pulling for the Canucks to be in the playoffs before Nashville.

Next up for the Canucks, another MUST win tomorrow vs Edmonton

I must've been a neat experience for local hockey players Robert Lindores and Braeden Johnson, as they had an opportunity over the weekend to play against the Canadian National Women's Hockey Team. I think I remember seeing an argument on the BCHL message board wondering who would win a head to head game- A Junior "A" team, or the National Women's Team.

Well, with the results of the game seeing a Midget Team beat the National Team, I hope that puts the Junior A argument to bed.

Thanks muchly to Doug Lindores for sending me the update.

On Saturday the North Island Silvertips of the B.C. Major Midget League played Canada's National Women's Team which is preparing for the world Tournament in April in China. The Game was played at Bear Mountain in front of 2100 fans.

The Silvertips won game 5-3 Two local players Robert Lindores and Braeden Johnson play on Nanaimo based Silvertip team

Braeden Johnson a goaltender kicked out 40 of 43 shots Robert Lindores chipped in a goal and an assist in the win.

A second piece of great news Doug sent me is below- congrats to Jared- and GOOD LUCK, it would be pretty exciting for the local fans to be able to watch a local player in the World U17's at the Multiplex.

In other news Midget player and a member of the ADSS skills academy Jared Crema won a position on the Island under 17 team in tryouts at Lake Cowichan this past weekend. Jared will next play in Mission May 1st to 4th. This is a stepping stone to making Team Pacific which will play in the under 17 tournament next December and January in Port Alberni.

Thanks Hammer

I was happy to get this update about the Richmond Steelers- local hockey player Jayme Clark plays for the Steelers, and she even scored a goal in the championship game. Read the release below. Good luck to the Steelers in the Westerns.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

March 20th 2008

RICHMOND PACIFIC STEELERS TAKE GOLD AT BC CHAMPIONSHIPS!

Richmond B.C. – The Richmond Pacific Steelers confirmed their place as the best U-18 AAA female team in B.C. by taking the Gold Medal in a decisive four day round robin Tournament hosted by the Fraser Valley Phantoms and BC Hockey elite high performance female division March 17th -20th. The Steelers finished the Championship with a perfect 4-0 record, outshooting

their opponents by a 192 to 59 margin and outscoring their opponents by a 21-4 margin. As impressive, the team out shot their opponents by a minimum 29 shot margin in each game of the Championship round robin play. In the Gold Medal game they faced off against the Prince George Cougars who earned a spot in the Championship game by defeating the Vancouver Fusion 5-4 in Game #1 and the Fraser Valley Phantoms 4-1 in game #5 of round robin play. The Steelers beat the Prince George Cougars 7-1 in game #3 of round robin play and 5-1 in the Gold Medal game held March 20th for the 2007-2008 Female Midget Zone AAA Championship.

Steelers Affiliate Player, Erin Eagles, opened the scoring in the Gold Medal game in a goal mouth scramble, after a shot from Steelers forward, Sarah Hilworth, at 5:59 in the 1st period. The Cougars answered back at 12:01 of the 2nd period with an unassisted goal by Cougars center, Elysha Aspeslet, but Steelers forward, Chelsea Campbell trumped that goal at 13:47 with a highlight reel goal driving wide, beating a Prince George Cougars’ defenseman, and then roofing a shot glove hand side on the Cougars goaltender for a 3-1 Steelers lead. Steelers forward, Alannah Kedra McCormack scored two goals in the 2nd period and Steelers defensive player, Jayme Clark, found the net to round out the 2nd period 5-1 heading into the scoreless 3rd period play. Final score 5-1 Steelers.

What was remarkable about the Steelers performance over the four day Tournament was that the majority of the games throughout the Championship and in the Gold Medal game they played without three of their top forwards, Dominique Goutsis, Alisa Baumgartner and Ling Ling Lok, all of whom have committed to NCAA Div 1 programs next season and top defensive players, Stephanie Klein and Kaliegh Fratkin, who was out with a broken thumb. “More than anything, I think the Provincials showed how deep this team is. By the end of the Tournament, we had only five 3rd year Midget players in the lineup, with the remaining roster all 2nd year Midget players and younger. All the younger players were challenged to step up and play major minutes and in crucial situations. They demonstrated they were more than up for the challenge and are poised to step in and take a leadership role next year,” says GM and President Alan Chim.

The Steelers have seen a lot of firsts this season. Early in the season, they were the 1st BC

U-18 AAA female team to make it to the Championship game at the granddaddy of Eastern Tournaments, NAHA, Labour Day Invitational Tournament where they lost 1-0 in a shoot out against top ranked Little Caesars from Detroit Michigan. The Steelers are the only BC female U-18 AAA invited to the large Eastern Invitational Tournaments. As well, they are 1st BC team to host the inaugural and international JWHL Championship games featuring teams from Alberta and the U.S.A. The Steelers took Silver in the JWHL Tournament. And now they can proudly state they are the 1st U-18 AAA team to win Gold at the inaugural BC Hockey Female Midget Zone AAA Championship. “It has been an amazing season of pioneering firsts for us and the female game. We are very proud of our players, coaching staff, management, parents, and volunteers for their dedication, commitment and passion for the U-18 female game. We have also been fortunate and appreciate the support we have received from many levels including BC Hockey, 2010 Legacies Now, Spirit of 2010, our community, other hockey clubs and the media. It all works together for the common good of the game of hockey. We are looking forward to the opportunity to help continue a leadership and stewardship role for the female U-18 game in our Province,” says Steelers President and GM, Alan Chim.

With the Provincial U-18 AAA Zone Midget Gold to their credit, the Steelers have earned a berth to the prestigious Western Canadian Midget Female Championship which will be held in St. Albert [just outside of Edmonton] Alberta, April 2nd - 6th, where they will square off against the Provincial Champions of Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Alberta and the host, St. Albert Kal-Tire Slash. "I was proud of how hard our girls competed to win the inaugural BC Female Midget Zone AAA Championship...with a number of key players not able to participate...our group demonstrated a great deal of determination and grit to go undefeated with such a depleted roster...we recognize that the challenge that lies ahead will also be great....as we will be competing against the best team that each province has to offer...every game in St. Albert will be a battle...but what I saw our group demonstrate this past week...and the development that has taken place during the year...gives me no doubt that if we play to our capabilities we will have an excellent opportunity to bring back a Western Canadian Championship," says Steelers Head Coach Billy Coupland.
