Alberni Wrestling for immediate release …..
Messenger Selected to Coach Two National Teams This Summer
Local wrestling coach James Messenger will be having a busy summer thanks to his selection as a National team coach again this year. Messenger will perform double duty this summer as he will coach both the National Junior team and the National Cadet team at separate tournaments in different countries during the month of July.
Messenger’s first assignment this summer is as one of two coaches taking the National Junior team to the Junior Pan American Championships in Managua Nicaragua. Juniors are 19-20 year wrestlers usually coming from first or second year university programs from across Canada. The National Junior team leave Canada on July 6 and return on July 12.
Messenger will not be returning to Canada with the National Junior team as he heads further south to Brazil. Messenger will have a few days to himself in South America before being joined in Manaus Brazil by the National FILA Cadet team. The Cadet team are 16-18 year old wrestlers selected to represent Canada at the FILA Cadet Pan American Championships in Manaus July 18-20. Messenger will return to the valley on July 25th.
It will be quite a month for the local wrestling coach but he is up for the challenge. “I decided the time to do this is when I am young and have more flexibility in my life,” said Messenger, “ it is an honour to be selected to coach one national team let alone two in one month. I think it says a lot about our program that the Canadian Wrestling Association has selected me because it is the quality of our local program and our athletes that has built my credibility as a coach.”
Alberni Wrestling Director Tom McEvay praised Messenger for his hard work and dedication. “ James is an incredible asset to our program and to wrestling in our region and in BC. He coaches at Dunn and our Club as well as helping at ADSS. In addition he is the Vancouver Island Regional coach and is part of BC Wrestling’s coaching leadership team. To see him getting National positions is not surprising as he is highly regarded across Canada.”
Messenger himself is a product of the local program he now coaches. He started wrestling in 1992 at Mt. Klitsa Junior High before moving to ADSS in 1996 where he was part of their powerful team that won three BC titles in a row. After high school Messenger went to Simon Fraser University on a wrestling scholarship. At SFU he finished his teaching degree before being fortunate enough to get a teaching position back in hometown Alberni in 2004.
