Alberni Wrestling Competes in the Mural City

A small contingent of local wrestlers travelled to Chemainus for the Cougar Invitational on Saturday. Despite having a large part of the senior ADSS team competing at a provincial tournament in Burnaby, and other wrestlers unavailable due to injuries and school commitments the team had some promising results.

Alec Delcourt led the way for ADSS by winning the gold medal in the 57 kilogram division. Delcourt dominated his preliminary matches in route to the final where he wrestled teammate Norman David. The final was a back and forth match which was eventually decided by a take down in the last ten seconds of the final round. Norman David finished with a silver medal as a result of his outstanding performance. Both grade nine wrestlers, Delcourt and David’s success bodes well for the future of the Armada team.

Young up and comers who also contributed to team points for the ADSS team were Ashton Lommen-Clayton (2nd 66 kg), Wes Boris (2nd 70 kg), Mark Bradley (3rd 84 kg), and Brandi Curley (4th 51 kg). The success of this small group of wrestlers allowed the team to finish fifth in the Junior Division.

Six middle school wrestlers from EJ Dunn also travelled to the tournament. Eric Gill won the silver medal at 48 kilograms and his teammate and training partner Russell David won the bronze at 41 kilograms. Eryk McKenzie and Emma Vanderlee also managed to place in their weight classes finishing 5th and 6th respectfully.

Coach James Messenger made the following comments about the team’s performance. “I was happy with how we wrestled. We got to see how our younger wrestlers compare to the competition on the Island. We have got a tough group of middle school kids and a tough group of grade nines and tens who are going to be able to contribute to the senior team in the years to come. I was also impressed by Mark Bradley who earned a medal in the senior division. He wrestled in middle school but this was his first tournament in three years and to come away with a medal is great. If he keeps working hard I think he may be able to surprise some people on the Island this year.”

Alberni wrestlers will be training hard this week in preparation for the War on the Floor at Simon Fraser University December 17 – 19. The local middle school wrestlers compete in the grade 6-8 division on December 17 with the grade 9-12 novice running on the 18th. The Elite division is set for Friday December 19th.

Moving along now to the Seniors....

The Armada Senior wrestling team saw their first action this season at the Roberts Rumble over the past weekend. The tournament took place at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver. Teams were made up from regional clubs and many of the top wrestlers from around the province were present.

The Armada boy’s team placed 7th over all. Head coach John McDonald explained how the tournament worked. “It’s a dual meet tournament where you win and lose as a team. Each weight class is wrestled and points are awarded to teams based on how a wrestler wins or loses. We did not have a full line up due to sickness, school and injuries. A forfeit at any given weight class gives the other team points.”

The tournament did give many of the wrestlers a great opportunity at some early season competition. Cody McEvay led the team for the boys going undefeated with a 4-0 record in the 69kg division. McEvay has a fifth place finish from last year’s provincial championships and has clearly demonstrated that he will be very competitive this year at this weight class. Mike Cappus also had a very successful weekend going 4-1. Cappus a returning provincial champion has just started training in the last 2 weeks after an injury kept him out of the beginning of November. He defeated two provincial placers from last year and lost a close match to provincial champion Fido Sahota of Burnaby Central.

Other notable wrestlers having a great start to the season included Austin Evans and Cullen Hines. Evans went 3-1 on the day and showed that he will be a potential force in the 54kg division this year as a grade 10. Hines is only in grade 9 and went 1-1. This is the first taste of higher level competition for Hines and he proved himself to be ready and competitive at the 69kg division.

The girls division saw kids pooled into weight classes and wrestling round robin mini tournaments. Savannah Toth from ADSS took the 65kg division easily with 2 wins over other provincial placers from last year. Toth a returning provincial champion demonstrated she will be very tough to beat this season at any weight class she chooses. Daley Forbes a grade 9 wrestler placed 6th at last year’s provincial championships got her first taste of elite competition on Saturday. She was competitive and gained valuable experience against older girls but fell short of placing in the top three in her weigh t class.

North Island College also brought over some wrestlers to the competition. Travis Carey and Harry Campbell travelled with the team and were able to get some exhibition matches. Campbell was 3-1 and Carey went 1-1 for the weekend. Both wrestlers have come to Port Alberni to continue their education at North Island College while being able to further their wrestling careers. Head Coach Ivan Diaconu was at the tournament and noted the value in getting some top quality competition. “It is important that wrestlers get competition like this early in the season. It is a way to confirm what they are doing in practice and a way for them to see what they need to work on.” The North Island Wrestling Program has been working in conjunction with the Alberni Valley Wrestling Club.

The next action for the Armada Wrestling Team will next week when the team will travel to Vancouver for the “War on the Floor” tournament at Simon Fraser University. There will be novice and elite divisions at the tournament and it is expected that the team will be bringing as many wrestlers as they can to get some competition prior to Christmas.
