*UPDATED WITH HIGHLIGHTS* Bulldogs rally to top Capitals 3-2 in a shoot out

Great win tonight.... big fan of the shoot out here....ha!

It's late...or early, so I'm hitting the hay. I did manage throughout the bus ride home to get a jump on providing some highlights and I stayed up to get it done before I call it a night. Enjoy.

Don't forget that the Bulldogs are in the Fall Fair Parade tomorrow starting at 11:00am sharp.

The game started with an immediate push by the Bulldogs, as they had a couple net drives that ended up in chances with pucks thrown on goal from a sharp angle that were kept out by Jack Grant. The Bulldogs appeared to have momentum as they pushed in the attacking zone, but that was halted when they were whistled for a boarding penalty. The Bulldogs successfully killed it off and didn't give up much, with John Hawthorne tested once but looking sharp to make a good save on a cross-ice set up for Luc Wilson. The Bulldogs were immediately again penalized, and again successfully killed it off to keep the game scoreless. The Bulldogs had again a couple dangerous looks in the attacking zone, the most notable being when Michael Sacco put his own rebound off the post behind Grant but it failed to find the net. A late Bulldog power play saw a good initial set up for Keaton Mastrodonato in the slot that was blockered away by Grant, with the Capitals doing a good job to kill off the remainder of the minor. Shots were 13-10 Capitals.

The second period again started with good pace, and again an early Bulldog penalty. They would successfully kill it, with the Caps looking dangerous at times and John Hawthorne looking sharp. Shortly afterwards it was 1-0 Bulldogs as Dawson Tritt finished off a fantastic effort to open the scoring as he stole the puck from Vincent Millette and then knocked it off the stick of Boo Grist to walk in on goal. He would pull the puck behind the net and get Grant out of position, before using his reach to tuck a wrap around home five-hole. The goal was un-assisted at 7:52 of the second. The Bulldogs subsequently earned an immediate power play chance, but couldn't cash in on it. They would then be penalized themselves, but once again killed it off with Hawthorne looking sharp to protect their lead. Shots in the period were 17-10 Capitals, for a 30-20 advantage after 40 minutes.

The Capitals would get the equalizer five minutes into the third, on a turnover by the Bulldogs in the attacking zone that led to an odd-man rush counter that saw Paul Selleck feed Vincent Millette over the Bulldogs line up the right side. He would delay and use a defenceman as a screen to fire a quick wrister long-side past the blocker of Hawthorne, making it 1-1 at 5:01 of the third. The Capitals would take their first lead of the game in the back half of the third as Luc Wilson gained the zone up the right side and threw a rink-wide pass to Adam Conquest. He would in turn dish off back to the right side to find a wide-open Boo Grist, who in full flight walked into the right circle where he blew a slapper far-side past the blocker of Hawthorne to make it 2-1 Capitals at 11:26 of the third. The Bulldogs responded immediately off the following draw, generating a scramble around the Caps net that failed to go in. They would continue to push, and tied the game on a gorgeous end to end rush by Evan Googins, who picked up a Jackson Doucet chip from Camron Cervone in full flight up the left wing. He would blow past a Capital defender and into the left faceoff dot where he ripped a perfectly placed shot top corner, far-side high off the bar and in for his first career goal to tie it at 2-2 with 5:52 to play in the third to force overtime. Shots in the third were 11-6 Capitals, for a 60 minute total in their favour of 41-26.

The Bulldogs were dominant to start overtime, winning a series of faceoffs to control possession and create chances as a result. Jack Grant was fantastic, coming up with a series of highlight reel saves to keep the game going. The Capitals later had a dangerous looking rush that turned into a partial breakaway, but Michael Sacco dug in on the backcheck to dive and block the shot out of play as the game went to a shoot out. Shots in overtime were 5-3 Bulldogs, for a game total of 44-31 Capitals.

The Capitals deferred the opportunity to shoot first, and the Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead when Jackson Doucet just managed to sneak it home five-hole on Grant. Adam Conquest would subsequently be stopped by John Hawthorne, before Dawson Tritt was stopped by Grant. Hawthorne would again come up with a save on Luc Wilson, forcing Grant to come up with a game saver on Julian Benner. The Capitals would need to score on their third attempt to keep the game alive, but John Hawthorne came up with a game winning save on Vincent Millette for the 3-2 final score.

Shots were 44-31 Capitals, with John Hawthorne picking up the win in net with 2nd star honours, with Grant earned 3rd star honours with the loss. The Bulldogs went 0 for 2 on the power play, while the Capitals went 0 for 5.

The Bulldogs are next in action Sunday afternoon when they visit the Clippers in Nanaimo.
