Dogs win 5th straight, 3-2 over Clippers, rematch tonight at the Dog Pound

The Dogs won their fifth in a row tonight, snapping the Clippers win streak at the same number with a 3-2 win at the Frank Crane Arena to take the first half of the home and home set before the rematch Saturday night at the Dog Pound.

The game was tentative early, but the Dogs started to control the play later in the period, eventually taking a 1-0 lead on a Chase Van Allen point shot that hit traffic and went in. The lead didn't last long as just half a minute later the Clippers tied it when Josh Bryan one-timed a shot from the right point off a faceoff win in the Dogs end through the screen and off the glove of Matt Larose.

The second saw no scoring again until the late stages as the Clippers took a penalty to cancel out a powerplay opportunity. When four-on-four turned into the power play on the fly the Dogs went up 2-1 as Dylan Nowakowski got his own rebound off a deflection after a great set up by Josh Mitchell and Walker Hyland and jammed it by Christopher Eiserman.

The Clippers tied it at 2-2 early in the third as David Iacono got credit for the goal when a Graeme McCormack point shot deflected in the slot and changed direction, going in off the pad of Larose. Jesse Neher might have been the actual goal scorer - or it may have hit a Bulldog stick.

The Dogs scored the eventual winner just a minute later when the line of Tryg Strand, Chase Lang and Yan Kalashnikov buzzed around the Nanaimo end and drew a delayed penalty. Former Clipper Mike Puddifant would score what would prove to be the eventual game winner with Matt Larose on the bench for the extra attacker as he fired a rebound home off a Chase Lang shot from the slot.

The Clippers would draw a bench minor penalty following the goal, possibly arguing that they touched the puck long enough with the delayed penalty coming for it to have been deemed "posession" to get a whistle as a defender played the puck away from the front of the net.

The Clippers were unable to find the equalizer the rest of the way as the Dogs held the fort and made the lead stand, twice conceding icings in the final minute after attempts at the open Clipper net went wide.

Final shots:
38-32 Bulldogs

Powerplays:
Bulldogs 1 for 3
Clippers 0 for 2

Three stars:
3) Yan Kalashnikov
2) Christopher Eiserman
1) Trent Dorais

Kudos to whoever picked the stars in Nanaimo tonight as you don't usually see a player get the nod on the road without putting up any points. Dorais was certainly deserving of the award, and he certainly played like a Captain tonight - blocking shots, taking hits, maintaining discipline, winning battles, being the hardest working player on the ice.

Hammer, I just wanted to ask you if you could put up Eliot Raibl's alumni interview on your blog after you air it? Not right away, but when you update your blog. Kari and I will miss it, and she wants to hear it. Thanks!
