Sad day for Hockey, KHL team dies in Russian Plane Crash, Bulldog Update - Players still in camp, Alberni Golf Club Update, HOT HOT HOT

Sad sad sad news that hits a little too close to home for someone who has spent the better part of his life travelling with hockey teams. Russian KHL team Lokomotiv Yaroslavl were on board a Russian Yak-42 that crashed shortly after takeoff, killing 36 of 37 passengers. Among the former NHL'ers on Lokomotiv - former Canuck Pavol Demitra.

Sad sad day. My thoughts are with their families and the fans of the team. Read more from TSN here

That's my drive yesterday from the 18th hole at the Alberni Golf Club. For those that aren't familiar with the course, that's a 345 yard hole, and a drive about 20 yards short. A might wallop. At least I parred it, usually from there I find a way to bogey! HAHA! Special thanks to Bruce MacDonald for getting us out on the course on a very busy day. The course is in immaculate condition and the greens have come back nicely after being punched a couple of weeks back. Get out there EARLY to avoid the heat!

Here's the Alberni Golf Club update from Gerry Fagan, thanks as always Gerry!

Don Nicklin Aces Number 13

Don Nicklin playing with his usual group on Wednesday afternoon, got a hole-in-one on number 13 the hardest and longest par 3 on the course. Don used his 5 wood and with the smoothest of swings sent the ball soaring towards the green and into the hole. What made this so sweet, not only the other three golfers he was playing with saw it go into the hole but the foursome playing behind them were all standing there as well. I think I heard the cheering down town. Don told me that due to circumstances beyond his control his car had a sleep over in the Golf Course’s parking lot on Wed. night.

The Dairy Queen Lone Ranger event went off without a hitch on Sunday,  Except for the white tees being back as far as they would  go it was a good event. The team players were listed A,B,C&D. On the first hole use the net score of player A plus the best net of the other three players. On the Second hole use the net score of player B plus the best net of the other three players, On the third hole use the net score of player C plus the best net on the other three players. On the Fourth hole use the net score of player D plus the best net of the other three players, then start all  over again  until all 18  holes have been played.

Two teams came in with identical scores of 130. Winning on a count back was the foursome of Cal Davies, Mel Trelvik, Jack Sparks and  Jules Gaudreault. In Second position was the team of Mickey Keeley, Gene Kimoto, Bill Morin and Gerry Fagan. The final prize went to the group of Vic Carlton, Wolf Suhr, Don McGowan and John Jones.

In the ball sweep, the best of the day was shot by Priban Rasmussen who came in with a gross 78 winning 3 balls, while Gerry Fagan had the best net shooting a 68 also taking home 3 balls.

Closest to the pin winners were, Jacques Giovetti on No. 2, Brian Tall collected $15 for the Charity closest to the pin on No 4, Vic Carlton for his second shot on No 6, Mickey Keeley on No. 13 and Don Oliver on No 17.

Next week will be an open day, with the ball sweep, money pot and the Charity closest to the pin happening. Be sure to make your tee time starting at 7:30 on Sunday,
