Bulldogs 5 Capitals 4
Now THAT is entertainment!
The Dogs came out playing like they had something to prove in their home opener as they took a 1-0 lead 4:22 into the game on the power play when Connor Varley took a pass at the top of the point from Tyler Berkholtz that he one-timed past the stick side of Alex Peck for his first BCHL goal. The Capitals would get the equalizer when Mike Hammond slammed home a rebound at the side of the net on a Caps powerplay with four and a half minutes to play in the period.
The Capitals went up 2-1 just over a minute into the second when Clayton Petrie roofed a rebound from the top of the crease from the seat of his pants. Four minutes later it was 3-1 Capitals when Dillon Houghton knocked the puck loose and Chase Kaiser skated onto it and scored a beauty as he picked the top corner short side.
The Bulldogs would make a game of it at 3-2 with 3:57 left in the second on a great hard working shift by the Dorais-Berkholtz-Sam Mitchell trio as they were rewarded for hemming the Capitals in their own zone when Tyler Berkholtz lifted a loose puck home from in tight created by a Trent Dorais wrap around. Sam Mitchell made a great steal late in the shift when it looked like the Capitals were going to be able to break the containment. With 1:06 to play the Bulldogs tied it at 3-3 on a 5 on 3 power play when Josh Mitchell potted a cross-crease feed by Colton Sobchak. Casey Bailey also picked up an assist.
The teams would go back and forth throughout the third until Sam Mitchell made it 4-3 Bulldogs on the power play with 7:24 to play in the third as he ripped one home on a great heads up back door pass from his brother Josh.
The Capitals would tie the game up two minutes later on a 5 on 3 power play as Jordan Grant put a one-timer from the top of the deep slot past the blocker arm of Frank Slubowski to make it 4-4 with just over five minutes left in regulation. I was shocked when Grant celebrated by "flipping the bird" to the fans. Maybe he did "ps wrong finger" but it looked pretty authentic to me. It very well may be the most epic use of the digit since Maverick and Goose saluted the Russian Mig....the younger readers won't get that one but anyone around for the late 80's will! The goal took the excitement out of the building and the crowd seemed downright shocked at Grant's reaction when he scored. It seemed almost unbelievable "are you kidding me" when the Dougs found the winner just 1:03 later when Josh Mitchell scored his second of the game - this time shorthanded on a great set up by Trent Dorais.
It was edge of your seat excitement, and holy smokes was the Dog Pound LOUD!

It's the Bulldogs hosting the Clippers tonight on 93.3 THE PEAK with the pregame show kicking off at 6:45pm PST.
The Clippers were in action last night as they were thumped 8-2 in their home opener by the Surrey Eagles. The Eagles scored SEVEN straight power play goals (which has to be some kind of record) from the first period through the second period and into the third, Check the boxscore here The Clippers will no doubt be coming into the Dog Pound as an angry group, so I hope the Bulldogs are ready to bring the same kind of effort, but just better, than last night!
It's also the 26th Port Alberni Toy Run today, so I will talk to you live from 10am to 3pm from all over the place, including:
Little Qualicum Falls where the 1000 plus bikes will marshall from before leaving at NOON SHARP
The entrance to the Valley by Coombs Country Candy, where we will do our Official 93.3 The Peak BIKE COUNT

Is Dorais suspended for tonight's game because of his misconduct at the end of the game?
(wayne) Hammer did Grant flip the bird to the crowd, or just one loud mouth, idiot fan?
I don't know, why don't you ask him?
Point is, there's 1500 people in the building, 7 to 800 on that side of the rink, a couple hundred more in that general area.
