What a weekend, FINAL Bulldogs show on SHAW

Good to be back to the blog. I hadn't had a weekend off since September, so it was quite fun to spend Friday night at the Canucks game, and Saturday at the Aquarium, La Piazza Dario (the Ranallo's Restaurant) and watching U2 3D at Imax. On the way home Sunday we caught another movie in Nanaimo.

My heartfelt thanks for the hospitality, generosity, and friendship of the Ranallo's and the Sandors'.

It was right back to reality yesterday, back in doing the morning show and after that was done it was off to SHAW to work on the final Bulldog show.
The final show started airing last night, with the storyline focusing on what's happening off the ice now to set up a successful 08-09 now that the action off the ice is finished. Alan Kerr and Bryant Perrier are my guests on the show, and we also got some footage of Frank Slubowski in action with the Comox Valley Glacier Kings. Check out the show which runs as part of "The Daily" on SHAW Channel 4 in Port Alberni.

My final thanks to Jenny Fortin, Nancy Wilmot, Darren Evans, and everyone else from SHAW for helping me out with the show and for giving me the opportunity to do it.

Speaking of Bryant Perrier - the Bulldogs officially announced him as their new head coach on Friday. This was something that was talked about at length with Alan Kerr and Bryant last Monday night on "Bulldogs this week" so I'm glad all the formalizing of the contractual terms is done.

It is good for the organization to have this done already. Heading into 06-07 the Dogs didn't have a coach until August. The same thing happened last year with the ownership change.

Congrats to Bryant, as I'm sure this is a nice reward for what was a trying season. We'll have Bryant in on THE PEAK morning show Friday just after 8:10am to talk about this and the plans from now until training camp.

BANTAM TIMBERMEN BRING BACK BANNER

The Alberni Valley Timbermen brought the VIAHA AA Bantam Championship home with them on Sunday after back to back home and away victories over Peninsula Eagles.

On Saturday, the bantams played in front of 200 fans at Weyerhauser arena and demonstrated their fast paced disciplined style of hockey against the bigger visiting team. The Timbermen scored three unanswered goals in the first period. They began the second period defending five on three. Peninsula’s goal came only seconds before the first penalty expired. Alberni was unable to convert any of its numerous chances for most of the period but scored twice in the last two minutes to go ahead by 4. In the third period penalties slowed down the visitors and allowed Port Alberni one more goal on a power play for a final score of 6-1.

Goals were scored by Gerry Fitzgerald (2), Leo Fitzgerald (2), Cam MacAdams and Myles Fitzgerald. Assists went to Jesse Ursic, Leo F., Keenan McConnell, Luciano Somerville, Brady Janzen, Colin Norris, Myles F. and Carson McCulloch. Gianni Crema was outstanding in net, and out of it, as he challenged aggressively on any break away attempts.

The crowd for Sunday’s game in North Saanich was smaller but louder. By the end of the first period Alberni was ahead 4 goals to none, two of them on power plays. Facing elimination, the Eagles came out hard after the ice clean. The hard hitting style slowed down the Timbermen offence and the only goal of the second period was scored by Peninsula at the 12 minute mark. The Timbermen came back in the third with two more even strength goals. Then Peninsula got a power play goal with three minutes remaining. With the game out of reach, frustration levels began to climb and there were numerous penalties in the closing minutes. Alberni scored again on a power play with 2:09 remaining in the game, making it 3 power play goals on 9 opportunities to that point. There were 8 more penalties given to both teams in the last two minutes of the game. The Timbermen are to be complimented on maintaining their discipline and not retaliating when the Peninsula team boiled over. The final tally was 7-2 for Alberni.

The scoring on Sunday was led by Gerry Fitzgerald with 3 goals and 2 assists. Singles were scored by Myles, Leo, MacAdams and McCulloch. The other assists were credited to Leo (3), Myles (3), Ursic (2), McConnell and Somerville. The rest of the team did their part in shutting down the aggressive physical play of the Eagles. Crema was outstanding again in goal and Andrew Cusson, who relieved him in the third period, was also solid.

As Vancouver Island Champions the Bantam Timbermen will compete for the BC Provincial Championship in Summerland starting on March 15th. The players thank all their parents for supporting them through the Vancouver Island AA championship. They also thank Head Coach Brent Demerais, Assistant Coach Dave McConnell, conditioning coaches Dave and Jill Sherlock, Manager Janet Fitzgerald and Safety Person, Sonia Somerville, all the other behind the scenes helpers, and their sponsors, G.D.M. Boom and Sort, Red Mark Ventures, and ReMax Realty.

CONGRATS AGAIN FELLAS.

That's it for today.
