What a great photo from Shane Power of Lasting Images Photography as Josh Pineiro avoids a big hit, as the Vee's player gets the worst of it and some serious AIR TIME. I think it was Eric Kroshus, but can't remember for certain! Thanks for the great picture Shane.
What a game last night as the Dogs built up a 5-0 lead after two periods en route to beating the Penticton Vees 6-2. A great night for the fans in the pound, some of who were shocked at how the game went, as more than 1 person said to me "where have these guys been all year!"
After the game I spent an hour and a bit at the radio station doing work for today and tomorrow. I then headed down to Boston Pizza as I was invited there this week for two seperate get-togethers.
First Angel Magnussen and her mom Cheryl invited me up for the Variety Coin Drive celebration and a chunk of cake. A day later Carl Poole informed me that it was his last game wearing the armbands in Port Alberni and said I should drop by for a pop afterwards.
(below is a the link to Angel's site- ANGEL, FRED, and JELLY BEAN thank the Valley FOR THE BEST COIN DRIVE EVER. You blew it OUT OF THE WATER Port Alberni, well done. Read more HERE on Angel's site
(Don't forget the Variety Show of Hearts Telethon starting tonight going to tomorrow night on Global BC)
So I walked in, and was shocked that Angel was still there! What a champ. I quickly ran to the lounge to shake Carls hand and order him a celebratory drink. I then ran back to the restaurant side and chatted with Angel before she left. As they left and as I was about to head back to talk to Carl I was intercepted by Nick Sandor's dad John, and then Adam Baldassarre who said "Hammer I have to introduce me to my parents" So I went and did that (what a pleasure to meet you guys) and then the Ranallo family reeled me in for a glass of wine in celebration of the win. As I sat down I was informed "you are surrounded by Italians, you aren't getting away now"
I looked to my left and in front of me. The Ranallos and the Sandors. To the right- the Baldassarre family. Yikes was I ever surrounded!
Big credit to the Boston Pizza staff who not only found me with the piece of cake from Angel that they had saved for me, but also the drink I had ordered for Carl. Both from opposite sides of the restaurant. I was all over the place and they did a great job.
One chunk of cake became two as Nick Sandor's cake arrived. Happy 19th yesterday by the way Nicky. You don't look a year over 15!
What a great night- cake and wine for supper, surrounded by friends I felt I had known all my life.
As I finally snuck away from there, I went back to talk to the officials and to offer my congrats to Carl on a well called game for the final one in his own home town. I told him that I thought he called the game as close to perfect as you could get, and that the glasses that were thrown had to have been "just for sentimental reasons" The whole table then laughed as it so turns out that the gentlemen that threw the glasses was sitting right there. He said that he was waiting for a bad call to throw the glasses, but Carl didn't have one so he finally just let them fly. I agree, good game Carl and good luck in the game and in life in the future.
Before I left Eliot Raibl grabbed me and introduced me to his family, and the conversation was immediately shifted to RAY-BULL vs RYE-BULL. Or wait, am I confused now? haha.
It so turns out that the back story behind the confusion goes back way further than in the BCHL on the radio! In the end the conclusion was that we were setting things RIGHT with RYE-BULL.
Then I finally called it a night after a darn long day!

Ok, now to today. How do you follow up last night? With the same effort tonight, but just better. With a 4-3 OT win last night over the Caps in Duncan, the Kings will be hungry tonight to build on their one-point lead on the Caps for the final playoff spot in the Coast. They also might have some revenge on their minds after the Dogs beat them here 5-3 last Sunday. Click the image below for the CHEAT SHEET for tonight.
Tonight's second intermission feature guest is former Bulldog Jordan MacIntryre, with the team in 2004-2005 and early 2005-2006 before being traded to the Victoria Grizzlies where he ended his BCHL career last season. He has furthered his hockey career and education, attending the University of Wisconsin-River Falls and suiting up for the Falcons.
Just a short note- FINISHING your career here doesn't make you alumni. Wearing the sweater and putting in the blood sweat and tears and being part of the community is what makes you alumni. Fans here might not keep track of all the former Dogs, but they certainly remember most of them. You put on the sweater, the fans remember you forever. It's my job to help them keep track of the guys. So here we are again tonight. MAC was one of my favorite guys, a great team guy and a great personality.
Don't hesitate to drop me a line to the booth about the games about the blog about anything.
I gotta roll to get ready for tonight.
See you at/talk to you from THE POUND on the final home game of the season. Pack the shack people.
Hammer
